VIDEO: James Durbin rocks The Beatles on American Idol

Go big or go home.

Well, they don’t come any bigger than The Beatles, and even the Fab Four don’t get much bigger than when they’re recording a song with Eric Clapton on lead guitar.

On this week’s Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame-themed edition of American Idol Wednesday, James Durbin took a left turn and switched his game plan from all-out rocker to a place where he could reveal his intense, sensitive side, with a version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

“I’ve done 3 big rock songs in a row; it’s gonna be real unexpected for me to pull back,” James told Idol mentor Jimmy Iovine and guest advisor Will I. Am. of The Black Eyed Peas.

“You’re never going to advance as an artist, as a person, if you don’t take these chances. I think this is the perfect time to showcase that,” added Durbin.

The results shows airs Thursday night; the American Idol finale is set for May 25.
