Rush: Neil Peart caps off Drum Solo Week on Late Show with David Letterman

It’s all about rhythm this week on The Late Show with David Letterman, as the program launches its first ever Drum Solo Week.

Drum Solo Week
Late Show with David Letterman

JUN 6 – Anton Fig
JUN 7 – Sheila E.
JUN 8 – Roy Haynes
JUN 9 – Neil Peart (Rush)

Letterman stays in-house for opening night on Monday, as the Late Show’s Anton Fig gets things started.

A renowned session drummer, Fig initially had major ties with KISS; he played on guitarist Ace Frehley’s 1978 solo album, before replacing Peter Criss on the KISS albums “Dynasty” (1979) and “Unmasked” (1980) – work which he would remain uncredited for until years later as the band tried to hide their personnel problems from the public. Fig later joined Frehley’s first solo band, Frehley’s Comet, and, later, played on his 2009 release, “Anomaly.” Figs other credits include work with Joe Bonamassa, Ritchie Blackmore, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and B.B. King, among others.

Sheila E. is front and center on Tuesday.

The former Prince percussionist developed a solo career following her work with Prince on his “Purple Rain” album and tour, later touring with Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band in the past decade. Sheila recently performed with Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez during the season finale of American Idol.

Jazz drummer and bandleader Roy Haynes gets the spotlight on Wednesday.

With a career lasting more than 60-years, Haynes is among the most recorded drummers in jazz. In his mid-20s, Haynes was a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker’s quintet, going on to work with many jazz legends, including Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and many, many more.

The week caps off on Thursday with an extremely rare solo TV performance by Rush drummer Neil Peart.

Originally inspired by Keith Moon and John Bonham, Peart’s influences include a variety of musical styles and forms, all of which he’s managed to mix into the dynamic sounds of Rush. A highlight and Rush concert staple is Neil’s drum solo, freshly constructed for each tour.
