Rio promoter says Axl Rose didn’t respect Brazilian fans

Rock In Rio 4 promoter Roberto Medina is calling out Axl Rose for his selfish behavior at this year’s festival.

Globo.com’s Extra followed up with Roberto to get his thoughts on this year’s event, held recently in Rio de Janeiro.

Commenting on Guns N’ Roses, who were 2 hours late getting on stage despite agreeing to pay a hefty fine for making fans wait, Medina said “Axl came very late and did not respect the public,” citing three things in particular: “I found a lack of commitment, respect [for] the public, [and] the huge delay (they were more than two hours [late]).”

Medina isn’t the first promoter to speak openly about Axl’s selfish behavior but, as I detailed in my GNR rant on the weekend (read it here), this is case of someone making so much money that any type of fine won’t discourage or deter his behavioural issues.

And, frankly, the whole exercise seems futile on many levels, because it’s been happening for years and, even if fans stopped buying tickets to the Axl-only version of Guns N’ Roses (they’ve already stopped buying the music, as “Chinese Democracy” ended up in Best Buy’s $1.99 bargain bin in March), it’s reasonable to assume that the singer has enough money to last a few lifetimes, and can simply retire to the walls of his gated estate for the rest of his days.

There are fans who have become so used to the unnecessary delays that they simply accept it as part of the GNR package and, clearly, whatever Rose does to abuse their support in his work is fine with them; this blind allegiance doesn’t work for everyone, though.

Considering it’s only rock n’ roll, Axl certainly seems to thrive on creating drama, with fans and promoters continuing to enable him at every turn.
