VIDEO: Duff McKagan on his early years with Guns N’ Roses

“I moved to L.A. in 1984, September 14th,” begins Duff McKagan. “Met Slash and [drummer] Steven [Adler] very soon thereafter…could have been within the first week or two, that soon. Within the first six weeks, Izzy [Stradlin] moved in across the street, and I saw Axl [Rose] in L.A. Guns before we’d actually met. I saw him, he saw me, and we started talking; I think we might have been seeing the same girl, but nobody needs to know that.”

And there you have it, straight from the man himself – the story of how Guns N’ Roses original lineup connected on the west coast in the early days…and a rock band was born.

McKagan is sharing stories about the early GNR years because they’re also included in his new autobiography, “It’s So Easy (And Other Lies),” which he’s currently making the rounds promoting since its launch last week.

There could be a lot more GNR talk ahead for Duff and other former members of the group, since the band’s nomination for entry into the 20102 edition of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

"I don't really know what to make of that yet,” Duff told the Miami Herald, days after the news was announced. “That's quite an honor and we will see what happens. I woke up very early on the West Coast and I got a couple texts from the East Coast — 'Congratulations, congratulations.' I had to get writing and get started for the book release and then go work out with my sensei."

And what about a reunited GNR lineup playing at the event, should they be among those honored in 2012? "Oh, I don't know (laughing). I guess I have to start preparing myself for these questions," McKagan responded.

GNR are among 15 finalists considered for induction into the 2012 edition of the RRHOF. Votes will be cast by a group of more than 500 musicians and industry professionals; of the 15 nominees, the five that get the most votes will be announced in January and inducted into the Hall Of Fame at its 27th annual ceremony on April 14, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio, home to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame And Museum.

GNR was nominated in its first year of eligibility, which happens 25 years after an artist’s debut recording is released.
