VIDEO: Eddie Vedder – Can’t Keep

Eddie Vedder’s new solo release, “Ukulele Songs,” is out today.

The disc features a collection of original material and covers performed by Vedder on ukulele.

A new video for the album's opening track, “Can’t Keep,” has surfaced; the song originally appeared on Pearl Jam’s 2002 release, “Riot Act.”

Having recently completed a short tour of Australia, Eddie gets set to do a month-long US tour, which kicks off June 15th in Providence, Rhode Island and wraps up on July 15th at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall. Special guest Glen Hansard (The Swell Season, The Frames) will join Vedder on the road.

Also released today is “Water on the Road,” a live-concert DVD directed by Brendan Canty of Fugazi and Christoph Green featuring performances from Vedder’s August 16th and 17th 2008 solo shows at Washington, D.C.'s Warner Theatre. The DVD features a live performance of "You're True" from Ukulele Songs as well as a mix of Pearl Jam catalog, covers and songs from Vedder’s critically acclaimed, award-winning solo record, “Into The Wild.”

Phil Lynott’s son rocks to Thin Lizzy at Slane Castle

The boy was back in town.

Phil Lynott's son watched Thin Lizzy return to the Slane stage Saturday for the first time in 30 years.

Independent.ie reports Galway-based sculptor Macdaragh Lambe (pictured above right, with friend Roderick Perceval) enjoyed his late father's reformed band from a grassy hill on front of Slane Castle with host Lord Henry Mount Charles by his side.

"I wasn't here the first time my dad played 30 years ago, but seeing Thin Lizzy tonight, in this setting, with Lord Henry - it's something I am going to remember for the rest of my life," said Lambe, now 42.

Born in Dublin in 1968 as a result of a relationship between his mother and the then-struggling musician Lynott, Macdaragh was given up for adoption and brought up by Oliver and Martina Lambe in Celbridge, Co Kildare. It wasn't until he was 35 that Lambe learnt he was the son of the million-selling Irish rock star who passed away in 1986.

"It was marvelous seeing and hearing the crowd getting into my dad's songs,” said Lambe. “He's not around, but his music was rocking Slane again. I was very humbled and moved to be witnessing it.”

Headlined by Kings Of Leon, an estimated crowd of 80,000 attended Saturday’s event, which also featured Elbow, White Lies, Mona and The Whigs. Past Slane concerts have included Bruce Springsteen, Guns N’ Roses, The Rolling Stones, U2, Queen and Oasis, among others.

AC/DC: Brian Johnson remembers Bon Scott

More than 30 years after his passing, there remains a lot of love for AC/DC’s Bon Scott – amongst fans and his fellow band members.

"I think he embodied everything that was fun, everything that was like 'never say die, live life to the full," Brian Johnson tells USA Today. "And he had a terrible thing happen to him when he passed on. He wasn't a wild, wild, wild man — he was just as wild as the other boys were. He was just unlucky. We've all done stupid, dumb things where we're young, but we got away with it. He didn't. It was just one of them stupid things that shouldn't have happened, and it was accidental and it was stupid. And I just won't have a bad word said against him. We still talk about him like he's a member of the band in the dressing room."

Johnson’s comments came during a book-signing stop last week in the New York area, as he promotes his new book, "Rockers And Rollers: A Full Throttle Memoir"; the book details Brian’s history and lifelong love affair with cars.

Brian’s big break came in the wake of tragedy in 1980 when Bon died accidentally after a night of heavy drinking. Johnson said he met Scott when they were on the road in the western part of the British Isles in 1974 - Johnson was then a member of Geordie and Scott was in a supporting act.

"He was up on stage singing, and we met and had a couple of beers," Johnson said. "He watched us play, and God bless his cotton socks again, when he did join AC/DC he was talking to the boys and he did say something to the effect that the only rock singer that he'd seen that was worth a damn was me, which was really nice of him, and the boys never forgot that."

For fans who never had the chance to witness Bon in person, a 30th anniversary edition Blu-ray/DVD of “Let There Be Rock,” the 1979 concert filmed in Paris a few months before Scott died.

The band premiered the film theatrically after Johnson joined AC/DC. "They showed me this movie that they just finished, and I saw it and it's a wonderful insight into Bon Scott," Johnson said of the boys performing on a small stage stripped of the enormous concert props of today.

"If you want to understand the band, then you'll understand this when you see Bon Scott with the boys when they were young and just starting out, and (thinking) you never know what the future holds," Johnson said. "You can tell these guys just wanted to rock 'n' roll."

VIDEO: Metallica’s James Hetfield honored at his high school

Who says you can’t go home?

From self-described misfit to metal legend, Metallica’s James Hetfield had a homecoming of a different sort on Friday: James was inducted into his high school’s hall of fame.

Hetfield received a special induction for attending Downey High in Downey, California during his freshman and sophomore years, an era of great personal difficulties for a young man at the centre of a family torn apart.

"I'm here to talk about the tough times that I made it through,”
said James. “My father left when I was 13 and my mother passed away when I was 16. I didn't get to finish high school here, which was very unfortunate, 'cause I did have a lot of friends here, and I ended up moving to a new school and having to live with my older brother. So high school was not the best time for me. But music was a savior — a very big savior in my life — and I was able to climb into other people's heads and their records and get involved in music and, basically, instead of hanging out at school, I went home and practiced guitar, and that was what I did.”

"The other thing I wanna say is that it was a very pivotal time and I did not know until now,”
Hetfield added later in his speech. “A lot of things happened in our lives and they happened for a reason. The thing that happened to me I was on a football team as a freshman, I came back the next year to be on the sophomore team, and Coach Cummings was his name, he says, 'You're gonna have to get a haircut. Your hair is way too long; it's past the ear.' And I look at football players and I say, 'Well… You have to have big hair to be a good football player.' But at that point he said, 'You've gotta cut your hair or you're off the team.' And at that point it was a very major decision. 'Do I wanna be a rocker? Or do I wanna be a football player' 'Cause my whole life growing up, I wanted to be on the Oakland Raiders; that was it. And the other dream was I wanted to be the guy on the poster — the Aerosmith poster I had in my room. So at that point I made a decision, so I handed in my gear and I just concentrated on music. So thank you to him for making [me choose]. [He was[ very distinct, very distinct, and he stood his ground and so did I. So I'm very, very glad that that happened at this school."

"I just wanna say thank you to the Hall Of Fame for inducting this misfit. And to all the people that are here today and all the young kids that I see here that love music and are inspired by it and it drives them in their lives. You get your inspiration from wherever you can and live your dream to the fullest, 'cause it can happen."

Chickenfoot: second album almost finished

Chickenfoot continue work on their sophomore album, due sometime later this year.

The band began sessions in January at Sammy Hagar’s Marin County studio, The Foot Locker, and have spent the past few months working around the band member’s various schedules.

The VHND reports Chickenfoot spent part of May in the studio with producer Mike Fraser, and things are cooking.

“Chickenfoot’s second album is almost finished, and we’re hoping to mix sometime in June,” says guitarist Joe Satriani. “It is heavier, and better than the first one, and I can’t wait to get it out there!”

“Been in the studio with Sammy, Chad and Joe finishing up the recording on the new Chickenfoot CD and having a blast!
” added bassist Michael Anthony.

Slash tops the hennemusic Hot 10

Slash was left wondering what his exact status this week was after he was spoofed on South Park, which left fans checking the story out for themselves as it rode to the top of the hennemusic Hot 10.

In the latest South Park episode, “Crack Baby Athletic Association,” the show built a mythical vision of Slash as a Santa Claus-like figure who is everywhere, but not real.

Check out the story for yourself to see what Slash thought of the whole thing.

The HH10 is a list of the most-viewed rock news stories in the past week by hennemusic readers.

10 – Judas Priest to play American Idol finale tonight with James Durbin?

While Zeppelin fans wait patiently for guitarist Jimmy Page to return to the stage – with someone, somewhere – the legend himself surfaced recently at the Ivor Novello Awards and was asked about his plans for the rest of the year. Seems Mr. Page is looking into the online business as he’s working on constructing a new website for himself, even putting the project ahead of creating new music. Page’s update was the second most-read story this week on the HH10.

At #3, you wouldn’t be laughed at if you saw The Cars on TV and did a double-take at the calendar: it is 2011, right? The Boston band is not only back with a new album, “Move Like This,” but they played a 2-week tour this month to promote their first record in 24 years, stopping by Jimmy Fallon’s show to play “Blue Tip.”

The second Slash story of the past week lands at #4, but it’s really more of a Van Halen deal. Through a connection between VH and his band, Slash learned that VH are now in the mixing stages of their new disc - their first with David Lee Roth since 1984 – and shared the news with Tom Russell’s listeners at U.K.’s Rock Radio.

Strangest story of the last seven days comes in #5, and it goes to ex-KISS guitarist Vinnie Vincent, who was arrested and charged with aggravated assault when his wife, Diane, arrived at the local Tennessee Sheriff's Office "covered in blood" and reeking of alcohol. Domestic violence is nasty business on its own, but when police arrived at Vincent’s home, they found Vinnie and "four sealed containers containing deceased dogs."

Other big news on the HH10 includes Scott Weiland performing on TV, Lady Gaga’s life-changing experience at an Iron Maiden show, Disney’s insane theme park show featuring Star Wars characters dancing to Metallica and Guns N’ Roses tunes (whaaa??!!), and two items on James Durbin’s metal takeover of the American Idol finale with legends Judas Priest.

A huge shout out to James for carrying the metal flag on Idol all season despite grief about from the producers and, at times, mentor Jimmy Iovine; Durbin stuck to his guns, kicked ass every week for months, and left all the other contestants in the dust.

VIDEO: INXS rock The Tonight Show

INXS look like they’ll have a busy summer, as the band recently announced the first set of North American dates on “The Original Sin Tour.”

The band will kick off the tour in Canada on July 3rd, with their first U.S. show slated for July 17th in Seattle.

Two years in the making, “Original Sin” teams INXS with musicians from around the globe, from superstars like Ben Harper, Train's Pat Monahan, Rob Thomas and Nikka Costa to up and comer DJ Yaleidys of Cuba, to reinterpret and revitalize their own classics for a whole new generation.

An eclectic mix of music including Thomas and Yaleidys' sultry take on "Original Sin" and trip-hop superstar Tricky's electrifying version of "Mediate" to Pat Monahan's emotional "Beautiful Girl" and French pop artist Loane's take on "Mystify" with John Mayer & Kirk Pengilly on guitar, INXS boldly embrace their past and future on one album.

To have so many of their peers want to perform INXS songs is a testament to the songwriting and something that INXS keyboardist/guitarist and main songwriter Andrew Farriss is immensely proud of. "I'm truly flattered that we have so many artists interested in working with us reimaging these songs. In a sense, it's been re-energizing for us to look at ourselves differently in the context of being in 2010 rather than, you know, 30 years ago. I feel we're very much doing something that's now and significant."

Lead guitarist Tim Farriss agrees. "Original Sin is just, for me, so exciting. I know certain people might sort of perceive it as why aren't you doing new material, but the fact of the matter is we're getting to play some of our favorite songs from our history and play them the way we want them to be heard today."

INXS stopped by The Tonight Show on Friday to perform “Beautiful Girl” with the help of Train’s Pat Monahan.

Roger Waters has ‘no wish to reunite with Pink Floyd ever again’

The past is best left in the past.

NME reports Roger Waters has dashed any hopes Pink Floyd fans had for a reunion of the legendary group by telling the BBC that he has “no wish to reunite with Pink Floyd ever again.”

"I'm really glad that I was in that band for the 20 years that I was in it and I really enjoyed it,” said Waters on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs show Sunday morning. “I think we did some great work together but I have no wish to do it ever again.”

Rogers’ comments come just two weeks after he was joined onstage by former Floyd bandmates David Gilmour and Nick Mason at London’s 02 Arena, as part of Waters’ “The Wall Live” tour. The unannounced May 12 guest appearances happened during Waters six-night run at the venue, shows that were being filmed and recorded for future release.

Gilmour played on “Comfortably Numb,” while both he and Mason appeared during the show’s closing number, “Outside The Wall” - with Gilmour on mandolin and Mason on tambourine, it was only the second time that the three surviving members had played together in the last 30 years.

The 02 “reunion” sent Floyd fans into a frenzy, re-energizing hopes and speculation that there might be more to come, but it sounds like Waters has moved on.

As have the others.

Gilmour’s blog advised fans that the event was “most definitely a one-off; David is not repeating his special guest performance at a later occasion,” while Mason told Rolling Stone “there are absolutely no plans” to reunite.

Rush: Neil Peart to appear on Late Show With David Letterman

Awesome news for Rush fans: Neil Peart is coming to a TV near you.

RushIsABand reports Peart is scheduled to appear on The Late Show with David Letterman on Thursday, June 9 as part of the show’s Drum Solo Week.

The fan site discovered the news in the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly (June 3/10 double issue), in a sidebar in the Music Reviews section entitled "Who's Playing on Late Night & Talk Shows."

June 9th is the band's off-day between Greenville and New Orleans, so the schedule syncs up for an extremely rare Peart TV appearance.

We’ll look for more details on this, including an official announcement by Peart and/or Rush.

“It was a hot season,”
Jackson added. “We started something that was, like, y’know…our 10th year anniversary…so, going into season 11 we got a lot to prove and show again.”

Rare AC/DC memorabilia exhibit to mark Bon Scott’s 65th birthday

An exhibition featuring rare AC/DC memorabilia will take place in Kirriemuir, Scotland this summer, heralding what will be something of a double celebration.

Thecourier.uk reports the exhibition will take place at the Gateway To The Glens Museum starting July 9 — which would have been the 65th birthday of lead singer Bon Scott, one of the town's most famous sons.

Museum staff expect visitors from around the globe to come to Angus during what is also the museum's 10th anniversary.

On display will be one of Bon Scott's jackets, which was donated by a private collector and which has never before been publicly shown.

"We've already had donations from fans in Spain and Germany and I've been taking inquiries for months," said museum assistant Sheila Philp. “I think this is going to be really big. Kirrie has had a few famous people over the years, but I think Bon Scott is beginning to overtake even [Peter Pan author] J.M. Barrie in popularity.”

"People come from everywhere just to see the commemorative plaque we have for him in the town, so you can imagine how many will want to come for this,”
added Philp. “His appeal is universal — everyone, from young kids to grannies and grandads, is interested in him."

Bon Scott was born Ronald Belford Scott in Forfar in 1946 and lived in Kirriemuir until the age of six, when his family moved to Australia. Scott joined AC/DC in 1974 and had just completed the hugely successful Highway To Hell tour when he died in 1980 at the age of 33.

Rush: new live DVD due in September

Rush fans will have a new live DVD in their hands this fall.

MusicTap.net reports Concord Records will release a Rush DVD with an undetermined title on September 27, which most likely refers to a live DVD of the band's April 15 performance at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Rush's Cleveland performance of its Time Machine show was filmed as a tribute to the U.S. city that first played the band's music; the event marked Rush's first live full-length filming on U.S. soil. Cleveland is notable for being one of the very first U.S. cities where Rush performed, in addition to being the first city to provide American airplay.

Featured below is a fan-shot video from the Cleveland show.

Rush are finishing their European dates this weekend before bringing the Time Machine tour back to North America, picking things up again June 8 in Greenville, South Carolina; the full tour wraps July 2 in Seattle.

VIDEO: Scott Weiland rocks Lemonheads cover on The Tonight Show

Out on the road briefly this month to help launch his new book, “Not Dead & Not For Sale," Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Thursday night.

Weiland played a cover of “Into Your Arms,” originally by The Lemonheads, the Boston-based alt band fronted by Evan Dando; the song originally appeared on 1993’s “Come On Feel The Lemonheads.”

In the past week and a half, Weiland and his band played the Lemonheads song – and many other covers - during two shows in New York and L.A., which were booked in sync with some in-store book signings in both cities.

Sebastian Bach done mixing new album

Three months and the music is complete.

Back in February, Sebastian Bach entered an L.A. studio with his new guitarist Nick Sterling, drummer Bobby Jarzombek and producer Bob Marlette to record Bach's next CD, due this fall via the Italian label Frontiers Records.

"We are DONE mixing the new CD," Bach updated fans Thursday via his Facebook page. "The last song we just completed was 'Awake', which a lot of you know. The melody from Nick Sterling in the chorus is so incredible; tender, heart-wrenching, builds into an emotional crescendo that is so beautiful and heavy to me. After much attention to detail from producer Bob Marlette, Nick, and myself, we now have the 'magic mix' of this track that literally makes me want to rip the skin off my chest it sounds so good."

"Next up we master the CD and vinyl versions of the record at Precision Sound in L.A.,”
added Bach. “Like my last CD, Tom Baker will master the record, because he did such a perfect job mastering 'Angel Down'.”

"Get ready to rock, mothertruckers! In stores this September!"

Sebastian plays the Rocklahoma Festival this Saturday (28) on a bill headlined by Staind; the same day, the Canadian rocker will also be featured on the VH1 Classic broadcast of the third annual Revolver Golden God Awards, which happened last month in Los Angeles.

Bach hosted the VH1 pre-show “black carpet,” doing interviews with all the rockers, before joining Asking Alexandria on stage for a cover of Skid Row’s “Youth Gone Wild.” Revolver has just released a special Golden Gods issue of the magazine, which features exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and interviews.

The guitarist is the hat is everywhere, but he’s not real.

That was one of the messages delivered on this week’s new South Park episode, “Crack Baby Athletic Association,” which mixed a sports-themed storyline with rock n’ roll guitarist Slash.

In the episode, Clyde and Craig need to find Slash for their boss Eric Cartman so that he can play at the event EA Sports is sponsoring. Clyde calls his parents when he can’t find Slash and they explain that Slash is make-believe, that he is actually based on the Dutch legend of the Vünter Slauche.

If you think Cartman and the boys were surprised to hear the news about Slash, imagine what the guitarist must have been thinking, as he posted the following note to Facebook following the program.

“I'm not......real? : ( “

Judas Priest talk about American Idol experience with James Durbin

There’s been a ton of fan reaction and debate about Judas Priest’s appearance on the American Idol finale Wednesday night, but regardless of which angle you come at it, the band brought heavy metal to a mainstream stage, potentially exposing it to a new audience.

Priest had some help, of course, as they were joined by contestant James Durbin, the 22 year-old from Santa Cruz that has been flying the metal flag on the reality series since he stepped on the Idol stage.

James rocked Priest’s "You've Got Another Thing Coming" back in March, possibly the first time heavy metal has hit the Idol stage. Week after week, Durbin got stronger and rocked harder, even bringing guitar legend Zakk Wylde on the show to help deliver the goods. For my money, no one else came close to generating the type of excitement James brought to the show throughout the season, which became even more obvious in the few episodes that followed his elimination; his absence was palpable.

Asked if there was any trepidation about letting Durbin take on their 1982 hit early in the season, guitarist Glenn Tipton told MTV News on the Idol red carpet before the show, "None whatsoever, I mean, if you look at what James has done for heavy metal, you've got to say thank you, you know? It's just bringing metal to the front, making it, metal, accessible for people. It's a good thing."

Such a good thing that there was no way Priest was going to miss an opportunity like Idol to spread the metal gospel; it also provided them with their first opportunity to introduce their new guitarist, Richie Faulkner, on the show; Faulkner replaces the recently retired K.K. Downing.

"Because we've lived so long and done so much stuff in heavy metal and we've seen so many crazy things and heard so many crazy things, when we heard this we went, 'F**k! That's incredible, man. Let's do it, you know? This is insane. That's just amazing,'" frontman Rob Halford explained of their reaction to getting Idol exposure. "So as it progressed from 'Another Thing Coming' 'till this point now, when we're on the carpet and we're about to do the show, it's just a dream come true for Priest, for metal and, mostly, for James Durbin"

As for whether there will ever be a collaboration between the fourth-place finalist and the British band, Halford was optimistic, saying, "Yeah, anything's possible."

"We just wish him all the best," added Halford. "He's got such an extraordinary voice. He's got such a genuine and lovable personality. He's the real deal, James, and we wish him the best. Good for you, James!"

VIDEO: Rush song wakes up Space Shuttle crew

Rush rocked the cosmos this week. Literally.

A one-minute, edited clip of Rush's "Countdown" from the 1982 "Signals" album was beamed to the Space Shuttle Endeavour yesterday as the wake-up music for the Shuttle crew, specifically at the request of Mission Specialist Mike Fincke.

Here's what Mike had to say after hearing the wake-up:

"Good morning to you all down in Houston and across the planet. I just wanted to say thanks for the song. That was by the band Rush and my friends Ken Fisher and Greg Shurtz sent that up for me. And Rush was really inspired by the launch of STS-1 so they included that in their music and it was really inspirational for them and for the whole album. What's really cool about it is that the Space Shuttle program has really inspired everybody across our planet for such a long time. So this song was a tribute to the Space Shuttle program and so we'd like to say good morning."

This is the final flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavour (mission STS-134) and the second-to-last Space Shuttle mission (STS-135 will be the last and is scheduled for July).

VIDEO: Steven Tyler rocks Aerosmith classic on American Idol finale

It was the moment American Idol viewers and rock fans had been waiting for all season: Steven Tyler finally took the Idol stage to perform.

Dressed all in white, Tyler pulled out the Aerosmith classic, “Dream On,” for the biggest show of the season.

After playing judge and mentor all year, Tyler finally had a chance to shine, and while he was unable to convince his bandmates to join him, Steven did bring brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots along to get the job done.

It was an abbreviated version of “Dream On,” which begs the question: what were the Idol producers thinking? They cut short a classic of the rock era in favor of brutal medleys by the Top 13 contestants – the bulk of who were not popular enough to make it to the finale – and appearances by everyone from Lady Gaga to Carrie Underwood to Beyonce (did she really need to do two songs???).

Those annoyances aside, the producers did schedule Tyler’s performance in the right spot in the show – moments before the winner was announced – which only managed to further the anticipation among viewers and, likely, those at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre.

Playing live at the Idol finale must have been a hugely proud moment for Tyler, as he put his stamp on his first season as a judge, one where he made many new fans with his encouraging words of support for the contestants throughout, kept everyone in stitches with his remarks, all while launching both a solo single and an autobiography.

They came. They rocked. They took no prisoners.

Metal gods Judas Priest debuted their new lineup – including latest addition Richie Faulkner – on the American Idol finale Wednesday night.

Priest teamed up Idol contestant James Durbin for a double-shot of metal, playing two of their classics, “Livin’ After Midnight” and “Breaking The Law.”

Durbin rocked Priest’s "You've Got Another Thing Coming," back in March, possibly the first time heavy metal has hit the Idol stage.

Priest have just announced North American dates for the band’s Epitaph Tour, which is being billed as the band’s final world tour, which kicks off June 7 in Holland.

"We're pulling out all the stops,” singer Rob Halford told the media at an L.A. press conference Tuesday. “We've built a brand new stage set, we've got all the effects that people love us for — the lasers, the fire, the bombs, the smoke, new costumes, and the bike. It's just a full-on metal extravaganza."
