No Van Halen on Grammy nominations special

Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy, and Grammy Nominations Executive Producer Ken Ehrlich have some explaining to do.

The Grammys teased music fans that Van Halen would be appearing on its sponsor-motivated Nominations Special Wednesday, and the band failed to materialize.

Here’s the Grammys' tweet of November 3:

Rumors have been swirling that VH would confirm something on the broadcast: their new record deal, their appearance on the Grammys next February, a name and/or release date for a single or new album….even details of a pending world tour.

Listen…given that it’s VH we’re talking about here, anything is possible, as the band has a history of public relations train wrecks throughout their career.

The only piece of information we know for sure, in this situation, is that The Grammys promoted VH as a part of their product. Band representatives did not confirm or deny anything regarding the appearance, and neither did the team at new label Interscope Records.

All that said, with their November 3rd tweet, the Grammys committed themselves to delivering VH for their special on Wednesday.

Neil, Ken and the Grammys need to step up, take responsibility and explain the motives and actions behind their messenging versus what the Grammy brand actually delivered.

So…what happened, Neil and Ken??

Rumor: Van Halen to announce world tour on Grammy special tonight

Van Halen fans will be keeping an eye on the Grammy Nominations Concert special tonight.

The 10 PM ET broadcast will announce nominations for the 54th annual Grammy Awards event next February, and feature a bunch of live performances.

Earlier this month, the Grammys teased that the show "will feature a special, live announcement from a truly iconic group regarding their historic band reunion set to take place on the Grammy stage on Feb. 12, 2012."

Then there was the oh-so-subtle tweet from the Grammys that said, "Who do u predict the reuniting band will be… Does this hint make u wanna ‘Jump’ and ‘Dance the Night Away’?"

Now, Triple M Sydney (and others) are reporting the rumor is that VH will be on the Grammy special to announce a world tour.

Stay tuned…

Motley Crue: Announcement clues update

This week, Motley Crue are appearing on that famous rock show, CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight, to make a couple of “big announcements.”

The band posted the news about the pending news:

“Big announcement coming later this week...tune in to Piers Morgan Tonight on CNN Thursday and Friday night 9PM Eastern/6PM Pacific to see it! Until then...we're revealing some clues. Here's the first one...check back tomorrow for the next one!”

Speculation continues that it will be the band’s rumored Las Vegas residency in February, which Vince Neil pal Robin Leach of the Las Vegas Sun wrote about a few weeks ago. Leach reported that the Crue are set to become the first heavy metal group to sign a short-term residency in Vegas, playing a nearly month-long series of three- and four-night concerts a week at the Hard Rock Hotel, starting at the end of February.

The band has been offering up Crue clues about the news, and we’ll update you with the first three in the series.

Hmmm…could they be spelling out “Sin City” amongst the clues?

VIRAL VIDEO: A Motley Crue Christmas

A year-old holiday video is going viral thanks to a plug from Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx.

Sixx posted a link on Facebook to the 2010 video of an Appleton, WI house featuring Christmas lights synced up to the Crue’s 1989 hit, “Kickstart My Heart.”

The video is posted as a “Make-A-Wish New Years Rock& Roll Light Display,” with the house located in Darboy, just southeast of Appleton.

“This is my New Year’s Eve Rock Show played only on New Year’s Eve,” posts the homeowner. “It’s the grand finale of the month-long light display.”

Since this is the 2010 version, who knows what he’ll be setting up this holiday season…

The Cult working on new album with Bob Rock

The Cult report that they are in the studio, with producer Bob Rock, putting the finishing touches on material for their new album.

Pictured above is guitarist Billy Duffy in studio with Rock.

The band’s ninth release is tentatively due in early 2012 via Cooking Vinyl Records.

Interesting to hear The Cult are working with Rock again, who produced the band’s 1989 effort, “Sonic Temple,” and their 1994 self-titled release.

Something has obviously changed in the band’s plan since spring, when they announced that they were in the studio with producer Chris Goss (Queens Of The Stone Age, Masters Of Reality) at the controls, with an early fall release expected.

Must be the new deal with Cooking Vinyl.

Bassist Chris Wyse shared some info in a recent interview with ViperRoom.com.

"The new The Cult deal is with Cooking Vinyl. We're in good company with The Prodigy and Marilyn Manson. The record is nearly done; Ian [Astbury] is probably doing vocals right now. It is due out April 2012!! This record is kind of a Zep/Stooges mix of energy, and I believe showcases a new level of depth for The Cult."

Ace Frehley cancels UK dates after fracturing wrist

Ace Frehley has been forced to cancel his three upcoming UK tour dates due to a fractured left wrist resulting from a fall in his home on Sunday.

Doctors applied a fiberglass cast to Frehley’s hand and arm, and he has been instructed not to play guitar or use his wrist for a minimum of ten days.

Ace would like to convey his deepest heartfelt apologies to all of his UK fans and to make it up to them, has already signed on to headline Hard Rock Hell 2012 next December. He hopes to be able to announce the additional rescheduled dates soon.

Canceled UK dates:

Dec 01 - Cardiff, Wales - Coal Exchange
Dec 03 - Pontins Prestatyn, North Wales - Hard Rock Hell Festival
Dec 04 - London, England - Islington Academy

The injury is unfortunate news for Frehley and his fans, as the guitarist has been on somewhat of a roll recently.

Earlier this month, Ace published his new book, "No Regrets: A Rock 'N' Roll Memoir," and it debuted at #10 on the New York Times "Hardcover Nonfiction" best sellers list.

Frehley had also been playing a series of dates and doing book-signing events around the country – and lots of media interviews – to help promote it, giving the guitarist his highest media profile in years.

Motley Crue to make big announcements on Piers Morgan Tonight

Motley Crue have posted the following news:

Big announcement coming later this week...tune in to Piers Morgan Tonight on CNN Thursday and Friday night 9PM Eastern/6PM Pacific to see it! Until then...we're revealing some clues. Here's the first one...check back tomorrow for the next one!

Bassist Nikki Sixx teases things a little more a few hints on Facebook.

The first is a picture of Sixx playing acoustic guitar; here’s the second:

Your guesses were good for something else, but not for this......If we went back in "history" and it was a rattlesnake it would of bit you in the ass..The hint couldn't be any clearer if it was the nose on your face..Let me make this clearer for you...:)....Any ideas now?

And a third:
Now that your brain is trying to figure out the riddle on one project, lets shift gear's and tease you with another... I told you it was gonna be a December to remember. NOW WHAT IS THIS?

Nikki’s hints suggest there’s two different projects they’ll be announcing, which puts the two Piers Morgan appearances in perspective.

Two weeks ago, Vince Neil pal Robin Leach of the Las Vegas Sun reported the Crue appears set to become the first heavy metal group to sign a short-term residency in Vegas. Leach says he’s hearing that the band will play a nearly month-long series of three- and four-night concerts a week at the Hard Rock Hotel, starting at the end of February.

At the time, Leach reported that fans should expect the official announcement on the Vegas deal just before Thanksgiving, as the Crue get set for a UK tour with Def Leppard and Steel Panther in December.

AC/DC’s iconic “Back In Black” is featured in a new commercial for Walmart.

The song’s use was tied in with Black Friday, while the ad promotes pre-holiday shopping in general.

No word on why AC/DC licensed the song for the huge retailer, although the band did sell its 2008 “Black Ice” album exclusively through the company, so there is a shared, recent history between the two.

AC/DC have licensed songs for commercials before, selling everything from mobile phones to shoes to retailer Target.

VIDEO: Nickelback rock CFL Grey Cup

Nickelback played their second football game this week on Sunday as they were the halftime show at the 99th annual CFL Grey Cup game in Vancouver.

The event is Canada’s pro football showdown (think Super Bowl), and it featured the hometown B.C. Lions (West Division champs) taking on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (East Division champs).

Nickelback jammed three songs in for the halftime show, which included hundreds of dancers and a whole lotta pyro.

The band was back on the friendly confines of home turf, following the headlines they made by doing a similar show on Thanksgiving Thursday in Detroit.

An alleged Detroit Lions fan secured more than 55,000 names on an online petition to ask the team to change their entertainment plans; turns out the band was told he may have been connected to a local artist who wanted to play the show himself.

Nickelback are out promoting their newly-released album, “Here And Now.”

Motley Crue: Nikki Sixx working on new book for 2012

Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx has found ways to keep himself busy when he’s off the road.

An avid photographer and writer, Sixx has already published two books: “The Heroin Diaries” (2007) and “This Is Gonna Hurt” (2011).

Now, Sixx tells fans he has another two books in the works; he was asked “when is your next book coming?" on Facebook, and offered this response:

"I am working on it now... I am hoping to release it somewhere between May-June 2012,” writes Sixx. “I am writing two books as we speak actually. The 2nd book will be out in 2013.”

“Neither book is like anything I have done before (I guess you can say the same thing about The Heroin Diaries and This Is Gonna Hurt too ),” he continued. “I pride myself on not writing the same book over & over and also not using a ghost writer. Of course it takes longer, but raw honesty through words is what I am driven to publish... After I get it all out on paper I use a trusted editor to help me carve it into a palatable experience..."

Nikki and the Crue are heading to the UK for a tour next month with Def Leppard and Steel Panther; shows fire up starting December 6 in Birmingham.

David Bowie denies licensing songs for UK musical

There’s some confusion over reports of a UK musical featuring David Bowie’s material.

The Guardian reported Sunday that a futuristic fantasy called Heroes: The Musical will tell the story of Major Tom, as well as the starman and a "young dude" called David and will have its world premiere in March at the IndigO2 venue, inside London's former Millennium Dome.

Bowie rarely gives permission for his songs to be used and has never allowed them to be used in this way before. "We could not really believe it when they gave us permission," said Deep Singh, who wrote the musical. "His people had warned us that it was very unlikely that he would be interested and that he had been asked many times before."

Singh, a former screenwriter, believes that Bowie gave consent because he emphasized that his story was not a nostalgic recreation of the 1970s but was set in the future and aimed to show the timeless relevance of Bowie's lyrics.

"We did not want Mr Bowie to think it was going to be a tribute show, and that seems to have had an effect," Singh added. He is putting the show together for one major showcase performance in the spring in aid of arts and community charities. If the performance is a critical success, he hopes that Bowie, who lives in New York, will grant it a longer life.

"Mr Bowie's representatives have been incredibly supportive when we have asked them for things and yet hands-off in terms of letting us get on with the project," said Singh.

The Guardian reports that all proceeds from the evening will go to three charities, the Orpheus Centre, Albert & Friends Instant Circus and Youth Music Theatre UK, that use the performing arts to help underprivileged and disabled young people to learn new skills.

Once the news splashed around the globe, Bowie’s representatives issued a statement to set the record straight:

“Neither the David Bowie Organization, nor its co-publishers EMI Music and Chrysalis, has issued a license for this performance at the O2. There are no negotiations pending for a long running musical featuring the music of Mr. Bowie.”

Stay tuned…

Rush: Geddy Lee honored by scholarship endowment

Rush’s Geddy Lee has been honored with a wine scholarship in his name.

Grapes for Humanity Canada reports it has committed $26,500 to establish the Geddy Lee endowed scholarship, which will be matched by the provincial government’s Ontario Trust for Student Support program, bringing the total scholarship to $53,000 annually.

The income will be used to provide an annual scholarship for a student in the second year of Niagara College’s Wine and Viticulture Technician program who intends to pursue a career path in winemaking after graduation.

“Niagara College is thrilled that Grapes for Humanity Canada is making this significant investment to support student learning and success, and the wine industry,” said Sean Kennedy, CEO of the Niagara College Foundation and acting vice-president, Academic.

“We are very pleased to support students in winemaking in recognition of this Canadian icon’s magnificent contribution as a director of our charitable foundation,” said Tony Aspler, President & CEO of Grapes for Humanity Canada. “We hope that the annual recipient of this scholarship will bring to his or her calling the same dedication to quality and to public spiritedness as Geddy Lee has brought to Canada’s musical legacy.”

The Grapes for Humanity gift is part of the Building Futures Campaign, which supports student learning and success through new facilities, equipment and learning resources, applied research, and scholarships and bursaries.

Bassist Dave Ellefson celebrated his 47th birthday at the Santiago fest, with Dave Mustaine and the crowd singing in his honor.
