Rush are in Canada’s capital, Ottawa, this week to receive a very presitigous honor.
The legendary band are among the winners of a 2012 Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, a recognition of lifetime artistic achievement.
Each artist honored receives a cash award of $25,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and a commemorative medallion struck by the Royal Canadian Mint.
The Canadian Press reports Rush members Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart joined their fellow recipients on Thursday for a visit to the House Of Commons to watch their Members Of Parliament (MPs) in action.
All parties rose to applaud the award winners at the end of question period.
Later, Geddy said he found the experience "really interesting."
"I don't know how anything gets decided," he commented. "It's certainly nice to see the lively debate."
Lee said he was honoured to be given one of the awards; he and the other laureates will be feted at a gala show on Saturday at the National Arts Centre.
"This is quite different because, being recognized as part of a group of artists from the country that I was born in and raised in and still live in, is quite unique to me," Lee said. "To see the variety of other artists that are honoured here today, means that arts means something in this country and I support that wholeheartedly, and it's quite an honour to be a part of it."
Rush are one of rock’s most influential bands, with remarkable longevity and a track record that includes selling more than 40 million albums since 1974.
Continually overlooked by the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Rush have previously received several honors in their home country, including induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (1994), the prestigious Order Of Canada (1996), Canada’s Walk of Fame (1999), Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame (2003), and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (2010).
"Clockwork Angels," the band's 20th studio album, will be released on June 12th.
