VIDEO: Metallica – best effects from new stage show

Metallica’s new stage show exploded all over Mexico City’s Sports Palace on Saturday during the opening date of a series of shows in the city.

“What an amazing first show with the new mind blowing stage,” Metallica posted in their Tour Journal. “During Puppetz, lighted crosses came up from the stage, Battery saw pyro and coffins, then we had Nothing. Enter Sandman was up next, and that's when shit really hit the fan! Loud bangs, random fireworks, falling towers, falling spot light guy, falling scaffolding, guy was caught on fire.... then a complete black out. After a few mins, some things were still working, so the crew brought up some work lights, amps and speakers, and the band played on with Die, Die My Darling. Seek was the final song of the night, with beach balls falling from the ceiling, and the infamous Metal Up You Ass toilet came down at the end of the show.”

The concert made headlines due to the stage effects, especially during the set-closer “Enter Sandman.”

Late in the song, a major series of explosions is triggered that appears to cause injuries to some of the band’s technicians, as one roadie runs across the stage completely engulfed in flames. James Hetfield shouts “stop, stop!” as the show comes to a screeching halt; after several minutes of confusion in the packed arena, the frontman yells “c’mon, let’s play” and the encore began.

"It's all part of the show," a spokesperson for Ocesa, the promoter of the concert, said about the onstage commotion.

The fire illusion is a recreation of a similar "accident" that was staged for Metallica’s 1998 concert video "Cunning Stunts," where a technician runs across the stage on fire.

Fans have compiled the best effects of the new Metallica stage show into a new video.
