Queen and Adam Lambert to headline Rock In Rio

Queen and Adam Lambert will headline the opening night of Rock In Rio’s 30th anniversary series on Friday, September 18.

The event marks the band’s return after opening the inaugural event in 1985 with original lead singer Freddie Mercury.

“30 years ago, Queen performed in front of 250,000 people who fell in love with the band, and it became one of the most iconic moments of Rock in Rio,” says Rock in Rio President and Founder Roberto Medina. “I am positive that the moments from 30 years ago will be rejuvenated and rejoiced with Queen + Adam Lambert, making it again a moment no one will ever forget."

Queen’s opening night January 11, 1985 at Rio’s custom built City of Rock exploded the record books, drawing an audience of over 250,000. The band’s second appearance on January 18, brought their total Rock in Rio audience beyond 500,000. Televised to over 60 countries across the world, Queen’s shows were watched by nearly 200 million people. Queen albums occupied all top ten places in the Brazilian album chart and “Love of My Life” became a new Brazilian anthem.

“We’re Back! Rockin’ in Rio!,” says guitarist Brian May. “Can’t wait! See ya there, guys!!”

"How great to be coming back to Rio to rock you even harder than before,” adds drummer Roger Taylor.

"I'm so excited to be joining Queen at Rock in Rio!” says Lambert. “This will be a triumphant return for them, and my first time in South America!"

The full Rock in Rio 30 Years festival runs for seven nights over two weekends - September 18,19 and 20 and September 24, 25, 26 and 27. Other artists already announced to appear include Katy Perry, System of a Down, Slipknot, A-Ha, Queens of the Stone Age, Faith No More, Hollywood Vampires, Metallica and John Legend.

Queen were named the No. 8 Rock News Artist Of The Year and Queen and Adam Lambert delivered the No. 9 Rock News Story Of The Year as part of the 5th annual hennemusic Rock News Awards.

Former Megadeth duo resurface as Act Of Defiance

Former Megadeth duo Chris Broderick and Shawn Drover have announced their new band – featuring includes former Scar The Martyr singer Henry Derek Bonner and Shadows Fall bassist Matt Bachand – is named Act Of Defiance.

Signed to Metal Blade Records, the group are also previewing their debut album with a sample of the punishing lead track, “Throwback.”

Both Broderick and Drover issued separate statements in late November – just hours apart – that they were leaving Megadeth to pursue their own musical interests.

Act Of Defiance are currently recording their debut with producer Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Hatebreed, Shadows Fall) with a release expected this summer.

"I am so excited to finally be able to announce Act Of Defiance to the world,” says Broderick. “Shawn just finished tracking drums the first week of February and his performance and tones are simply incredible. I have started tracking rhythms and leads, as well as working with Henry to get final vocal takes while Matt will record bass at his studio. The final mix and mastering will also be handled by Chris Harris.

"I am also very honored to announce that we have signed with Metal Blade Records. There is not a better label to be on than one where the employees (and owner) still understand and listen to Metal! They have shown a loyalty, backing and drive for their artists that few other labels have. As for our music, I am really enjoying the ability to create what is a killer mix of thrash and modern metal. It has a unique combination ranging from thrash to classical influences. I am very proud of what we have written and hope that you all dig it."

"Having our new band sign with Metal Blade Records is a real thrill for me,” adds Drover. “I started my musical career with Brian Slagel and the Metal Blade family many years ago, so to come full circle at this point is a real musical home-coming, of sorts. I couldn't be happier about that.

"What thrills me the most is the fact that myself, Chris Broderick, Henry Derek and Matt Bachand all have in common is that from the get-go, we wanted this band to be 100% Pure Heavy Metal! No compromises, no ulterior motives other than making the best Heavy Metal music we can. Metal Blade shares this vision, which really puts us all on the same page, musically."

As for Megadeth, bassist David Ellefson recently confirmed the band are moving forward with plans to hit the studio this year to record and release the follow-up to 2013’s “Super Collider”, with as-yet-to-be-announced new members in place of Broderick and Drover.

Pink Floyd: David Gilmour album update

Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera is sharing an update on the latest solo album by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour.

“It’s going very well,” Manzanera tells Uncut. “I think it sounds fantastic, people will be very happy.”

Manzanera co-produced Gilmour’s last album, 2006’s “On An Island”, with Gilmour and Chris Thomas, and also contributed guitar and vocals to the record.

Gilmour confirmed the project last fall in an interview with Rolling Stone and also revealed plans to head out on tour in support of the record.

“It's coming along very well," said Gilmour. "There are some sketches that aren't finished, and some of them will be started again. There's a few months' work in it yet. I'm hoping to get it out this following year. Then I'm hoping to do an old man's tour, not a 200-date sort of thing."

Gilmour says he plans to play smaller venues, as he did in 2006.

"There haven't been many discussions about the tour," he says. "But places like Radio City Music Hall sound like the right sort of vibe for me."

The guitarist performed the Pink Floyd classic, “Wish You Were Here”, during a surprise appearance with the Bombay Bicycle Club at London’s Earls Court on December 13.

Last November, Pink Floyd released their final album, “The Endless River.”

The project features material recorded by Gilmour, keyboardist Rick Wright and drummer Nick Mason during sessions for 1994’s “The Division Bell.”

The album serves as the band’s tribute to Wright, who died from cancer in 2008 at the age of 65.

Pink Floyd were named the No. 10 Rock News Artist of The Year as part of the 5th annual hennemusic Rock News Awards.

Former Pearl Jam drummer wanted by Texas police

Former Pearl Jam drummer Dave Abbruzzese is currently being sought by Texas police following his September 2014 arrest on possession of a controlled substance.

According to the Denton County Crime Stoppers website, the drummer was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance under 28 grams and the manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance.

Abruzzese joined Pearl Jam in 1991 after drummer Dave Krusen checked himself into rehab following the completion of the group’s debut album, “Ten.” He appeared on 1993’s “Vs.” and was fired from the band over "political differences" after recording 1994’s “Vitalogy.”

Abbruzzese married his childhood sweetheart, Laura Whisman, in 2006 and reportedly lives in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area.

Scorpions welcome drummer’s return following rehab

Drummer James Kottack (far right) with The Scorpions

The Scorpions have welcomed drummer James Kottack back into their lineup following his 2014 arrest and jail time in Dubai and a stint in rehab for alcohol abuse.

“It was like a disaster,” frontman Klaus Meine tells TV Rock Live. “He did make a mistake – he crossed the red line, definitely. This was not rock'n'roll and it was not funny. We said to James that he was pretty much out of the band. We told him, 'You have to go to rehab. You've got to take care of yourself and take it seriously.'We've set the doors wide open but it's really up to you.'"

Kottack returned to live duties late in 2014 and was on hand to record the group’s new album, “Return To Forever.”

"He recorded the album in Stockholm at the end of last year, and we played two shows with him,” adds Meine. “It was fantastic – it's great he's back in the family.”

Kottack spent a month in a Dubai jail last spring after being convicted of alleged misconduct at the United Arab Emirates capital’s airport.

On April 29, the drummer was sentenced to one month in jail and was fined 2,000 dirhams (approximately US $545) for drinking alcohol without a license after authorities claimed he insulted Islam.

Following his release in early May, Kottack connected with the MusiCares organization, which provides musicians with help for mental health and addiction issues.

The Scorpions have announced dates for a fall trek across North America as part of their 50th anniversary tour.

Bad Company to reissue expanded versions of first two albums

Bad Company will release expanded versions of their first two classic albums, “Bad Company” and “Straight Shooter”, as digital and Deluxe CD Editions featuring rare and previously unreleased recordings on April 7.

The release follows 2014’s reissue of both projects on 180-gram vinyl.

The band’s self-titled debut album, 1974’s “Bad Company”, reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Top 200 and has since been certified five times platinum for US sales of 5 million copies. The set contains some of the most well known rock songs of all time, including “Can’t Get Enough”, “Rock Steady”, “Ready For Love”, “Don’t Let Me Down”, “Bad Company”, “The Way I Choose”, “Movin’ On” and “Seagull.”

The album produced two US top-20 singles: “Can’t Get Enough” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “Movin’ On’” reached No. 19.

The second disc of the Deluxe Edition features 12 tracks, including eight previously unreleased recordings such as the demo for the ballad “The Way I Choose”, a take of “Bad Company” recorded right before the album version, and an unedited version of “Superstar Woman”, a song that frontman Paul Rodgers later recorded in 1983 for his solo album “Cut Loose.” Also featured is the single edit of “Can’t Get Enough”, and the b-sides “Little Miss Fortune” and “Easy On My Soul.”

The band’s follow-up album, 1975’s “Straight Shooter”, reached No. 3 on the Billboard Top 200 and featured the hits “Feel Like Making Love” (No. 10) and “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad” (No. 36) along with “Shooting Star”, “Deal With The Preacher”, “Weep No More”, “Wild Fire Woman”, “Anna” and “Call On Me.”

Of the 14 bonus tracks, all are previously unreleased except the b-side “Whiskey Bottle.” Among the standouts is a stripped-down version of “Shooting Star,” a remix of “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad” with alternative guitar and vocals tracks, as well as two lost gems, never released before: “See The Sunlight” and “All Night Long.”

The package features Aerosmith’s headline performance on June 15, 2014 as they closed the final night of the Download Festival in Donington Park.

"It's always an absolute hoot that leaves me howling at the moon, performing at Donington we couldn't have had a better time on stage that night,” says Steven Tyler. “I could feel the vibes of all the greats pulsing through the stage like AC DC, Rage Against the Machine, Metallica and so many more.”

“We have played Donington many times but this performance was one of our best,” said Joe Perry. “Thanks to our fans who were there who helped us make it a night to remember. We are proud to have it be part of this theatrical series and it will give our fans who weren’t there around the world a chance to relive an ass kicking night of rock and roll.”

Geddy Lee addresses Rush farewell tour question

Geddy Lee addressed the question of whether the band’s upcoming R40 40th Anniversary tour will be their farewell trek during a guest appearance on VH1 Classic’s “That Metal Show” over the weekend.

Rush have recently announced North American dates that will see the band hit 34 cities across the continent this summer, with shows beginning May 8 in Tulsa, OK.

"It's very hard to answer that question for a lot of reasons,” Lee explains. “The three guys in this band have different opinions on this point – everyone's in a different space right now.

"Neil has a young child at home and he's said numerous times that it's very hard for him to leave his daughter. She needs him.

"It's clear that we are at a point in our career that we have to slow down – and slow down dramatically,”
Lee continues. “So, I'm not a guy who's in love with the farewell tour idea, but it's clear that this is going to be the last big tour that we're going to do for a while, anyway.

"In terms of 'are we still a band?' Yeah, of course we're still a band. Do we talk about writing? Yes, we talk about writing. Will we do gigs in the future? I don't see why not. But, when you are talking about a tour that's 35 shows, 40 shows, 50 shows, at our age at this point in our lives, I don't know how many of those are still left in us."

The tour is named after Rush’s 40th anniversary box set, “R40.”

Soundgarden plan to release album in 2016

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil has revealed that the Seattle band plan to release a new album in 2016.

The rocker shared the news while in Australia to play dates across the country as part of the annual Soundwave festival.

"No studio has been chosen and no songs are written yet," Thayil tells the Sydney Morning Herald. "When we finish these shows in Australia we'll spend a month or more working on it. It's definitely going to happen.

"We worked with producer Adam Kasper on our last album [2012’s “King Animal”] and I wouldn't be surprised if we hook up with him again,"
he added.

Soundgarden issued the collection, “Echo Of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across The Path”, last November.

The package is a 3-disc, 50-track rarities compilation of original B-sides, unreleased tracks, instrumentals, covers and demos curated by Thayil.

Last month, frontman Chris Cornell revealed that he had begun work on his fifth solo album.

On January 30, Cornell performed with Mad Season featuring Mike McCready of Pearl Jam and Duff McKagan plus the Seattle Symphony orchestra at a special 'Sonic Evolution' concert at Seattle's Benaroya Hall.

VIDEO: Jimmy Page shares Led Zeppelin masterplan

Jimmy Page reveals some of his masterplan when he first put together Led Zeppelin in 1968, in part three of his recent interview with Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell in Los Angeles.

“I knew at that time there was a big focus on guitar, so I wanted to make it a tour de force for the guitar,” explains Page. “So for my playing, it was going to be everything from acoustic throught to electric, there’s pedal steel on it – there’s everything – I’m throwing everything on it to get all these guitar textures. So it goes from really rude bottleneck through to very sensitive acoustic.

“It was going to be a guitar tour de force but not at the expense of the other members – this was they key to it. Everyone needed to be really heard.”

The guitarist joined Cornell for “An Evening With Jimmy Page” at the Ace Hotel Theater in November to discuss his photographic autobiography, “Jimmy Page By Jimmy Page”, and his own history as a musician.

In part 1, Page discussed his early years and musical upbringing with host Cornell in front of a live audience, and in part 2 he spoke about how he came to join The Yardbirds.

The event followed the re-release of Page’s book, which sold-out of its limited-edition run of 2,500 copies upon its initial release in 2010 on its way to becoming the fastest-selling book in Genesis Publications' 40-year history.

Page and Led Zeppelin continue their extensive reissues series on Febuary 23 (Feb. 24 in North America) with an expanded reissue of their 1975 release, “Physical Graffiti.”

The band recently premiered unreleased versions of the tracks “Houses Of The Holy” and “Trampled Under Foot” from the project.

On March 6, Page will release “Sound Tracks”, a box set featuring the guitarist’s work on films “Lucifer Rising” and “Death Wish II”, along with additional archive material for the first time.

The Darkness to release Last Of Our Kind

UK rockers The Darkness will issue their 4th album, “Last Of Our Kind”, on June 1.

Produced by guitarist Dan Hawkins, the follow-up to 2012’s “Hot Cakes” is preceded by the newly-released lead single, “Barbarian.”

According to vocalist Justin Hawkins, the song has “not one but two dramatic monologues, a guitar solo that has been declared 'irresponsible', a riff that weakens lady-knees and a chorus that makes grown men shit directly into their pants."

"The lyrics describe the Viking invasion of East Anglia which culminated in the decapitation of Edmund the Martyr,” he adds. “So yeah, classic Darkness.”

The album sees the debut of new drummer Emily Dolan Davies, who replaces original drummer Ed Graham after a split last year.

Davies will make her live debut with The Darkness at an intimate "secret" show March 4 on Ireland’s Valentia Island as part of a 10-show run across the country to road test their new material next month.

“Last Of Our Kind” will be released on limited edition color vinyl, CD digital download.

Stone Temple Pilots share new music update

Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz are sharing an update on the band’s first full album with Chester Bennington of Linkin Park.

The band are currently in the studio working on the follow-up to their 2013 EP, “High Rise.”

DeLeo explains the sound of the new music in a new interview with WAAF Boston.

"Although we've been trying for many, many years to get away from ourselves, we always keep coming back to our same spot — that person in front of the mirror,” says the guitarist. “It kind of sounds like us. I'd like to think it's not anything we've done before; we definitely don't wanna repeat ourselves. It's just about kind of stumbling and writing some new musical terrain we haven't really explored before. But it's definitely R-A-W-K-I-N. Rawkin'."

"When we were writing these songs, it was just, like, 'Man, what gets us off on stage live?',” adds Kretz. “We wanna make sure that it has those elements where we're excited not just to present a good song, but something that has great performances on all our parts and something that the audience can just really enjoy."

DeLeo maintains the band’s approach to songwriting and studio work has remained the same since the February 2013 firing of original frontman Scott Weiland.

“It's really remained the same,” he says. “We come into a session with lots of material on our hands, and it's just a matter of sifting through it. Sometimes a song will stand on its own, sometimes I'll walk in with maybe one or two parts to a song, and [bassist] Robert [DeLeo] will say, 'I've got another part for that,' and there'll be a musical marriage there.

“The greatest thing about it is there's no rules. It's just, like, whatever the final product does… If it's putting that little tingle in your knickers, you know you've got something."

Stone Temple Pilots have announced dates for a spring US tour; the month-long, 13-show trek starts April 8 in Seattle, Washington.
