AUDIO: David Lee Roth releases new song Ain’t No Christmas

David Lee Roth has issued a new acoustic blues song, “Ain’t No Christmas.”

When it first surfaced in a recent episode of his online series The Roth Show, some fans speculated that the tune sounded like it could represent the singer’s farewell to his days in Van Halen, who have gone quiet since they wrapped up their 2015 with a pair of shows at the Hollywood Bowl in early October.

Roth’s management responded to the recent chatter, saying, "It's poetry. It has nothing to do with Van Halen."

Now, the rocker has issued a direct response via Facebook, stating: “On second thought, if all work is autobiographic, maybe this song is about Van Halen...”

Speculation regarding Roth’s status in Van Halen amongst hardcore fans began when three things happened since last year’s North American shows ended:

  1. Roth was set to perform with the lineup featured on his 1986 debut full-length solo album, “Eat ‘Em And Smile”, at a Hollywood club last November – a move to work with others outside VH has historically been frowned upon by guitarist Eddie Van Halen – except in the case of his bassist and son Wolfgang, who is also a member of Tremonti and is currently recording his debut solo album;

  2. former VH singer Sammy Hagar reached out to Eddie via Twitter for his birthday in late January, marking the first public attempt at communication between the two since the end of an ill-fated 2004 reunion tour; and,

  3. when Roth relaunched his online presence on February 7 – almost 12 months to the day after his social media sites went dark without explanation at the end of January 2015.

Speculation in some corners of the internet based on (1) and (3) is that Roth may have been under a limited time contract with the band and the arrangement had run its course.

No statements have been made to date by either Roth or Van Halen regarding plans to work together in 2016, but that isn’t unusual in a VH camp prone to silence between projects.

On the other hand, Roth may just be having some fun adding fuel to the online fires.

Boston announce 40th anniversary tour

Boston have announced dates for their 40th anniversary tour.

The North American run begins April 29 in Hollywood, Florida and tickets are now on sale.

The band says the tour promises to be a celebration honoring the group’s loyal fans, many who have supported Boston since 1976, when the self-titled debut album first hit the airwaves and took rock radio by storm.

Led by the singles "More Than A Feeling", "Foreplay/Long Time" and "Peace Of Mind", the album peaked at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 132 weeks. “Boston” went on to sell more than 17 million copies in the States alone (25 million worldwide) on its way to becoming the best-selling pop debut album in history at the time.

The group’s second album, “Don’t Look Back”, stormed out of the gate upon its release as a No. 1 US hit: selling 4 million copies in the States in its first month and 7 million in total.

Legal battles between the band and its label, Epic Records, held up work on a third record, which finally surfaced in 1986 as “Third Stage” after an 8-year wait.

More 8-year gaps followed before 1994’s “Walk On” and 2002’s “Corporate America” arrived, which stretched to 11 years before album number six – 2013’s “Life, Love & Hope”, surfaced.

All told, Boston have sold more than 31 million albums in the US to date.

Peter Frampton to perform on Conan

Peter Frampton will perform as the musical guest on TBS’ late night talk show Conan on Monday, February 29.

The guitarist is promoting his just-released album “Acoustic Classics”, which sees him deliver reinvented, unplugged versions of many of his best-known songs and one brand new tune, "All Down To Me."

On the record, fans will hear stripped-down takes on Frampton classics like “Show Me The Way”, “Wind Of Change”, “Do You Feel Like I Do” and “Baby, I Love Your Way.”

"The approach I took on this was that each song came across as if you are the first person to hear this song after I wrote it," says Frampton. "I had to reverse engineer each song in order to get this result, which I feel I achieved."

Frampton will support the project with a new leg of his Raw unplugged tour when it kicks off in Tucson, AZ on March 9.

As with his 2014 tour, the rocker will once again be joined by longtime collaborator Gordon Kennedy and his son, singer and guitarist Julian Frampton.

Led Zeppelin: Jimmy Page responds to Stairway To Heaven lawsuit

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page issued a response to the copyright infringement lawsuit over the creation of their 1971 classic, “Stairway To Heaven”, via a declaration filed in a California court on February 25.

The suit – brought by Randy California's estate and members of Spirit – claims the acoustic introduction to “Stairway” was lifted from their 1968 instrumental, “Taurus.”

The Wrap reports Page claims that he “never heard” the Spirit song until a couple of years ago.

In the declaration, Page states, “Prior to hearing a recording of ‘Taurus’ in 2014 in connection with this matter, I have never heard ‘Taurus’ or even heard of it. I am very good at remembering music and am absolutely certain that I never heard ‘Taurus’ until 2014.”

“I consider descending chromatic lines and arpeggiated chords basic skills learned by any student of the guitar,” he explains. “Certainly, as a guitarist, I was aware of descending chromatic lines and arpeggios long before 1968.”

Interestingly, Page goes on to confirm that he discovered a copy of Spirit’s first album in his personal record collection.

"I had not previously seen it in my collection and do not know how or when it got there," he states. "It may well have been left by a guest. I doubt it was there for long, since I never noticed it before. But, again, I know I did not hear ‘Taurus’ until 2014."

"I have several thousand albums of many different kinds," adds Page. "They include albums I purchased, albums people gave me and albums that were simply left at my home. Also, like a book collector who never gets around to reading books they collect, I have never listened to many of the albums."

As part of Thursday’s hearing, lawyers for Led Zeppelin filed a motion for summary judgment on the case in an effort to dismiss the proceedings.

VIDEO: Megadeth perform live debut of Dystopia

Megadeth performed the live debut of the title track to their latest album, “Dystopia”, at the Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 26.

The group delivered an instrumental version of the song for its first performance.

“My question is, ‘Are you cool if we play this song and I don’t sing it’”, frontman Dave Mustaine asked the crowd. “I like the song, it’s just that we’re not quite there yet for the singing part but I want to play it for you cuz I love the song and I love you guys.

“So here we go – this is Dystopia for the first time ever – we’re playing it for you… before Phoenix, before Los Angeles, before New York.”

Megadeth launched the North American leg of the Dystopia world tour in Dallas on February 20.

The 6-week trek sees the band joined by Suicidal Tendencies, Children Of Bodom and Havok.

Megadeth's 15th album, “Dystopia” recently debuted at No.3 on the US Billboard 200 with opening week sales of 49,000 equivalent album units.

Former Deep Purple singer says Rock Hall induction is a circus

Former Deep Purple singer Joe Lynn Turner says the band’s upcoming induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has become a circus show.

Turner has some rare insight into the situation given his work with both Deep Purple – he recorded 1990’s "Slaves And Masters" with the group during his three-year tenure with the band – and his years with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow.

The vocalist is sharing his thoughts on the April 8 event at New York’s Barclays Center that sees Deep Purple’s current lineup refusing to perform with former members including Blackmore – who has now decided not to attend.

“If he comes, Ian Gillan and the rest of the band won’t come,” Turner tells Rock Overdose. “If you ask me, they’re acting like children and it’s a mess and a shameful situation. It’s terrible that it happened. For me, it shows you exactly what is happening over there. That these people don’t know how to grow up and be friends. Just stop the bullshit. It’s a shame and it makes a circus out of the whole thing.

“I made a statement on my Facebook that describes how I feel about the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame, as I call it. They have no idea who is who, what is what. It’s a Hollywood event, and it really has not much to do with Rock and Roll anymore. It’s more of a celebrity event.”

“In the early days it was a true rock and roll organization. But now, it is turning into a circus show,” Turner adds. “It’s more like Grammys or something stupid like that. It took them how long to put Deep Purple into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? It should have been in the Hall Of Fame 25 years ago.”

Deep Purple will be inducted into the 2016 Rock Hall alongside Cheap Trick, Steve Miller, Chicago and N.W.A.

Blackmore has reformed Rainbow with a new lineup to perform three concerts in June, which mark the guitarist’s return to rock for the first time in decades.

Judas Priest are premiering footage of their 1980 classic, “Breaking The Law”, as a preview to the upcoming live package, "Battle Cry."

Due March 25, the set captures the UK metal vets live at Germany's Wacken Festival last summer in front of an audience of 85,000.

The European festival date was part of the group’s world tour in support of their 17th album, 2014’s “Redeemer of Souls.” The record marked guitarist Richie Faulkner's studio debut with Priest after he replaced founding member K.K. Downing following his retirement in 2011.

“Battle Cry” will be available on a 15-track CD, with the entire show on Blu-ray and DVD (running over 94 minutes), as well as digital audio and video formats.

The DVD and Blu-ray also contains three bonus tracks shot in Poland last December.

Anthrax premiere lyric video for Breathing Lightning

Anthrax are premiering a lyric video for “Breathing Lightning”, a track from their forthcoming record “For All Kings.”

“I was a little apprehensive about showing the band this song, because it wasn’t like the other songs that we were writing,” drummer Charlie Benante tells Yahoo! Music. “I was going for more of a really good riffing song and then the chorus was very melodic. It reminded me of Zeppelin.”

Bassist Frank Bello contributed a melody for the song’s chorus, which inspired guitarist Scott Ian.

“Frank had this ‘Do the right thing’ line that he had inserted in there while he was singing mumbo-jumbo parts for the melody,” explains Ian. “It stuck in my head, and the whole thing coalesced into this idea of getting to a point in your life where you’re committing to what you want to do in life even if it’s the hardest path you’re ever going to take.

“It all comes from me, because when I made the commitment to be in this band, I certainly wasn’t taking the easy path. So ‘Breathing Lightning’ is about pushing forward and not letting anything stand in your way.”

Due February 26, “For All Kings” marks the debut of former Shadows Fall lead guitarist Jon Donais, who replaced Rob Caggiano following his departure in 2013.

Anthrax recently wrapped up a series of dates supporting Lamb Of God on their headlining US tour, and will hook up with Iron Maiden next week for a month-long run across Latin and South America.

Ritchie Blackmore previews 2016 Rainbow concerts

Ritchie Blackmore is sharing a preview of his upcoming shows with Rainbow, which mark the guitarist’s return to rock for the first time in decades.

Blackmore will be joined by Lords Of Black singer Ronnie Romero, Stratovarius keyboardist Jens Johansson, Blackmore’s Night drummer David Keith and bassist Bob Nouveau when they perform the Best of Rainbow and Deep Purple at the Monsters Of Rock festivals in Loreley, Germany on June 17 and Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany on June 18, as well as a solo headlining date at the Genting Arena in Birmingham, UK on June 25.

"The nostalgia aspect certainly has a role in the upcoming shows,” Blackore tells Dutch magazine Aardschok. “Some people will use this project to check if I can still do it, while others will probably see it as an opportunity to see me on a bigger stage once again. I don't want to sound morbid, but I do believe that thoughts like these come with the age that I have. I turned 70 and that has its disadvantages. Having a sore back or stiff fingers on stage is no fun. However, all this comes totally from myself.”

"There were moments, a few years ago, when I thought of how much fun it would be to play some of the old songs again,” he continues. “However, the longer I thought about it the less appealing it all became. It was not until I found out about Ronnie [Romero] that the whole idea came back again and when I started realizing the idea. He has a great voice and his fresh input is what gave me the final push. I am quite demanding when it comes to singers, but with Ronnie is absolutely feels good. This guy has a great future in the scene. He sounds like a perfect fit for this job because he has a voice that reminds of Ronnie James Dio but is versatile enough to also handle the Ian Gillan songs well."

"The setlist will be Rainbow songs for about 70 percent, including 'Stargazer', because apparently that's a song everybody wants to hear,” explains Blackmore. “About 30 percent will be Deep Purple songs. We will focus on the best-known songs. The Dio era will be a central part of the show, but we will also play songs from the Joe Lynn Turner and Graham Bonnet periods. As far as Purple is concerned; we will play the Gillan era but will also play something from the David Coverdale period."

Ahead of the Rainbow shows, Blackmore will be inducted into the 2016 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on April 8 in New York as a member of Deep Purple.

The present day lineup of the group have refused to perform with Blackmore at the event, so the guitarist has decided not to attend the ceremony.

“Ritchie was honored by the offer of induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” read the official statement from his camp. “He was discussing the possibility of attending, until we received correspondence from the President of the Rock Hall of Fame, who said that Bruce Payne, management for the current Deep Purple Touring Band, had said "No"..........!!!!!" Therefore Ritchie will not be attending the ceremony. He sincerely thanks all the fans that voted for him for their support.”

Metallica named 2016 Record Store Day Ambassadors

Metallica have been named 2016 Record Store Day Ambassadors.

Set for Saturday, April 16, the special day in support of independent record stores and record store culture worldwide is now in its ninth year.

“Record stores are where our musical education began and was subsequently nurtured and shaped, playing a huge role in who we are as musicians today,” explains Metallica. “Since this special day’s inception back in 2008 with ten exclusive releases, the celebration has spread worldwide and expanded to almost 350 unique offerings from a wide variety of artists this year.

“It’s important for us to support this cause and encourage music fans everywhere to experience the exciting, inspiring, nostalgic journey through the world of music stores that we were fortunate enough explore in our formative years.”

Metallica's support of the annual event has been more than noteworthy with in-store appearances, (remember Mountain View, CA Rasputin Records in 2008, when the band met their fans for hours to kick off the very first Record Store Day) and a healthy handful of special releases – including Record Store Day 2015's highest seller, “No Life ‘Til Leather”, the band's cassette-issued demos collection.

Metallica will mark the April 16 event with a new live release, “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, Metallica! - Live at Le Bataclan. Paris, France - June 11th, 2003”, a CD featuring a live recording from the club, with the band, Record Store Day and independent record stores donating proceeds to benefit Fondation de France's Give For France charity.

"Independent record stores are part of Metallica's DNA," adds drummer Lars Ulrich. "They have been pivotal in shaping each one of us into the music fanatics we've all become. We could not be any prouder to be Record Store Day Ambassadors for 2016 and are looking forward to screaming from every rooftop the next few months about everything independent record store and beyond."

Neil Young to release Rust Never Sleeps and Human Highway on DVD

Neil Young will release two rare films – the concert feature “Rust Never Sleeps” and the post-apocalyptic musical comedy “Human Highway” – for the first time on DVD on April 22.

Neither film has been available for public viewing in years.

“Rust Never Sleeps” is the full-length feature about Young's 1978 concert tour and includes some of his most popular songs, including "Cinnamon Girl," "Like A Hurricane" and both the acoustic and electric versions of "Hey Hey, My My."

Digitally restored for the DVD release, “Human Highway” is Young's 1982 comedy starring Russ Tamblyn, Charlotte Stewart, Dean Stockwell, Dennis Hopper and Devo.

Young will launch the promotional campaign for both releases with a one-night event in US theaters on February 29.

Presented by Fathom Events, “An Evening With Neil Young Live” will present a special one-night only screening of the two films in movie theaters nationwide live at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT / 6 p.m. MT and tape-delayed to 7:30 p.m. PT, HI and AK.

The event also features an exclusive live Q&A with Cameron Crowe interviewing Young and his eclectic cast, which includes Gerald V. Casale of Devo, Tamblyn, and Stewart.

Full screening details and tickets area available at fathomevents.com

Young’s latest studio album is 2015’s “The Monsanto Years.”

Iron Maiden share video tour of Ed Force One

Iron Maiden hooked up with Made In Cardiff to share a video tour of Ed Force One, the Boeing 747 that will carry the band around the globe on their Book Of Souls world tour.

Hundreds of fans turned up at Cardiff Airport recently to see the group’s jumbo jet arrive and stocked with gear for the 2016 run in support of 2015’s double-album, “The Book Of Souls.”

Ed Force One will be piloted by singer Bruce Dickinson.

Iron Maiden will kick off the 2016 shows with three US concerts starting February 24 in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Produced by Kevin Shirley and recorded in Paris in 2014, the band’s 16th album delivered Iron Maiden a No. 4 debut on the US Billboard 200 with opening week sales of 75,000 copies.

The tally scores the band’s best US week since Nielsen Music started tracking sales in 1991, and the showing equals Iron Maiden’s best chart ranking ever – matching the No. 4 placement of 2010’s “The Final Frontier.”

The project also topped three separate charts in their native UK upon its release, scoring No. 1 positions on the UK albums, Official Vinyl Albums and the Official Record Store charts.

REPORT: Reunited Guns N’ Roses recording new material

A new report suggests the reunited lineup of Gun N’ Roses are in the studio working on new material.

"I know they’re doing some recording,” former GNR publicist Arlett Vereecke tells Classic Rock. “They’re definitely doing something there in the studio. Axl hasn’t been there, but Slash is definitely in there and it’s not for anyone else."

The rock news outlet also reports that Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin have been working together.

“Duff and Izzy were in the studio before Christmas doing stuff,” says former GNR manager Alan Niven. “At a casual glance I think they’ve got at least a couple of tracks down."

Niven’s comments mark the first possible confirmation of the involvement of guitarist Izzy Stradlin in the GNR reunion scenario, which to date has only revealed the participation of Axl, Slash and Duff.

The trio – and unconfirmed others – will launch a reunion run in April with two shows in Las Vegas, two in Mexico City and a pair of appearances at Coachella.

The 2016 shows will mark the first time the trio have performed together since a July 17, 1993 date at River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

VIDEO: David Lee Roth releases new episodes of The Roth Show

David Lee Roth has released a pair of new episodes of his online series The Roth Show.

The Van Halen frontman covers “Bull Riding” and “Top 40” in the features, which he launched in 2012.

“Up by popular demand,” says Roth. “Unlimited binge positive fun for the whole family & beyond…”

The web series resurfaced recently when the singer launched a new website on February 7 at davidleeroth.net after his social media sites went dark at the end of January 2015 without explanation.

Last year, Roth and Van Halen released their first live album together, and supported the project with a 3-month summer tour of North America.

Things have been quiet in the Van Halen camp since they closed out their 2015 run with a pair of shows at the Hollywood Bowl in early October.

Megadeth launched their North American tour in support of “Dystopia” in Dallas at the South Side Ballroom on February 20, and video from opening night has surfaced.

The band delivered a 16-song set heavy on classic tracks while playing only one song, "Fatal Illusion", from their 15th studio release.

“Dystopia” recently landed a No.3 debut on the US Billboard 200 with opening week sales of 49,000 equivalent album units.

The feat marks the group’s highest-charting US album since 1992’s “Countdown To Extinction”, which debuted and peaked at No. 2.

VIDEO: Sammy Hagar previews The Big Interview with Dan Rather special

Sammy Hagar is sharing a video preview of The Big Interview with Dan Rather, a special set to air on AXS TV on February 23.

Hagar hooks up with Rather to discuss his life and career, including the building of his $100 million dollar Cabo Wabo Tequila empire.

“I went to Mexico and bought a place in Cabo San Lucas in 1983,” says Hagar. “When I was down there, the tequila was different than what I was drinkin’ in America. [I said] ‘Man, this was the best tequila I’ve ever had in my life. Could you make it for me, guys?’ He tells my interpreter, ‘You bring me the bottles, and I’ll fill ’em up for you.’ Like that. That simple. And that’s how Cabo Wabo started. It was so unbelievably organic.”

During the session, Hagar takes Rather for a ride his his $1.3million dollar LaFerrari, the fastest street-legal car in the world.

The Red Rocker also performs an acoustic rendition of a brand new song, "Inner Child."

The Big Interview with Dan Rather featuring Sammy Hagar will be broadcast on AXS TV on Tuesday, February 23 at 8pm EST.

Deep Purple refuse to perform with Ritchie Blackmore at Rock Hall induction

Deep Purple have refused to perform with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore at the band’s April 8 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

After a pair of acrimonious splits in the 70s and 90s, Deep Purple will not turn the clock back to reconnect with one of their founding members.

"We were faced with a hard decision when we heard about the Hall Of Fame inductions,” explains singer Ian Gillan. “It was a surprise to us that [current members] Steve Morse and Don Airey did not qualify as inductees.

"Ian Gillan, Ian Paice and Roger Glover decided upon the offer of a compromise which has been agreed with the Hall Of Fame and enables us to turn up on the night. Deep Purple inductees will accept the awards and then the living breathing Deep Purple will perform.

"It should be stressed that there is no slight intended nor any desire to upset anyone regarding this decision; it is purely a mark of respect to Steve and Don. I spoke with David Coverdale last week and he expressed complete understanding of the way it was being handled. Thanks, David. You're a gent.

Outside of this event, there are no circumstances under which a 'reunion' could or would take place. So, let's all get up there, shake hands, smile for the cameras and get it done with dignity and respect for all the existing and past members of a very special family."

Blackmore’s camp issued a response to the news by informing fans via social media.

“Ritchie was honored by the offer of induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” read the official statement.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO Joel Peresman clarified rumors that the guitarist was prohibited from attending the 2016 event.

“There is no way he is banned from the ceremony,” Peresman tells Rolling Stone. “That notion we would ever do that is patently untrue. We've never banned any inductee. He is invited to come enjoy the evening and accept the award."

"Deep Purple's manager Bruce Payne told me they were unwilling to perform with Ritchie," he says. "We've had many situations like this in the past and many times these things get worked out for one night, and then they go back to their neutral corners the next day.

"We would love to have them all play together. We always want to do that. We always want to see the actual inductees that haven't performed together in a long time, if they have the opportunity to come together for at least one night, to do that. We'd like to see it as an organization, and I'm sure fans would like to see it too."

Deep Purple will be inducted into the 2016 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame alongside Cheap Trick, Steve Miller, Chicago and N.W.A.

The April 8 ceremony at New York’s Barclays Center will honor most of the group’s first three lineups, including Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Ritchie Blackmore, Rod Evans, David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes.
