VIDEO: AC/DC guitarist Stevie Young shares family’s musical history

AC/DC guitarist Stevie Young shares some of his legendary family’s musical history while on a break from the group’s Rock Or Bust world tour.

As Malcolm and Angus Young’s nephew, Stevie was brought in to handle rhythm guitars in 2014 for the album and tour following Malcolm’s retirement after he was diagnosed with dementia.

“My dad played accordion,” says Stevie of the family’s shared musical history, “and he had a guitar knocking around in the house and I was always picking it up. I tried the accordion but it was huge.

"I come from a musical family. My dad, in fact, all my brothers played an instrument, to some degree or another, mostly guitars. Parties were always good because there would be non-stop music all night so there was all these instruments around. You picked it up and played it away. There was always people to show you how to get on with it.”

Stevie continues to work hard – both on stage and off – as he settles into his full-time role with AC/DC.

"I work out stuff all the time; I keep working away,” he explains. “Every day I listen and try to find bits that I missed or something that Malcolm did that would help with what's going on in the tunes. I'm not trying to imitate or copy him, but trying to keep the spirit of what he did in the band."

Stevie previously replaced Malcolm on AC/DC’s 1988 Blow Up Your Video tour, playing dates across North America while his uncle took a break to deal with alcohol dependency issues. Legend has it that many fans failed to notice the lineup change due to the family resemblance.

Stevie and AC/DC closed out the European leg of the Rock Or Bust world tour with a performance in Düsseldorf, Germany on June 15; they’ll regroup with Axl Rose to play ten US dates that were rescheduled from spring, with shows starting in Greensboro, NC on August 27.

Metallica become face of Brioni menswear campaign

Metallica have become the face of a new campaign by Italian luxury menswear Brioni.

“We are beyond thrilled to have been invited to be the face of Italian luxury menswear powerhouse Brioni as they kick off their first creative campaign under the direction of newly appointed creative director, über cool style star Justin O’Shea,” says the band. “The black and white Queen ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ inspired photos were shot last month in San Francisco by photographer Zackery Michael.

“We’re sporting Bespoke Brioni suits and tuxedos as well as sunglasses from their new eyewear collection.”

The campaign sees a pair of Queen-inspired shots alongside individual portraits, which have been released ahead of O’Shea’s first show for Brioni, to be staged on July 4 during Paris couture week according to The Business Of Fashion.

At a time when many luxury menswear collections are becoming more feminine, Brioni, which was founded in 1945 and is best known for outfitting actors like Richard Burton and Matthew McConaughey, is cutting the other way.

As the Brioni campaign gets underway, Metallica are reportedly in the studio mixing their new album with producer Greg Fidelman.

The follow-up to 2008’s “Death Magnetic” is expected to be issued before the end of the year, suggests drummer Lars Ulrich.

“If the record doesn’t come out this year then it won’t be because it’s not done,” Ulrich revealed recently. “It will be because there’s some sort of cosmic reason that it would be smarter to hold onto it until next year. But the record will be done this summer.”

Joe Perry addresses future of Aerosmith

As Steven Tyler makes headlines with his solo debut and talk of a possible Aerosmith farewell tour launch in 2017, guitarist Joe Perry says the group continue to keep their options open.

“It’s one of many things we’ve talked about as a band, but I don’t know it it’s the end,” Perry tells Guitar World. “We take it from album to tour and day to day. It’s the same philosophy we’ve always had. But even if that final tour comes about, it could go on for two years. There are still a lot of places we haven’t played yet that we want to play.

“More to follow; let's just put it that way.”

As he makes the rounds to promote the July 15 release of his debut solo album, “We’re All Somebody From Somewhere”, Tyler recently told Howard Stern that the Boston band will begin a lengthy farewell tour next year.

“I love this band, I really do,” explained the singer, “and I want to squash every thought that anybody might have that the band’s over. We’re doing a farewell tour but it’s only because it’s time.”

When Stern asked the singer to confirm the news about a farewell trek, Tyler replied “I think so, next year.”

Aerosmith will regroup for a South American tour this fall, and Perry admits the band have had a farewell trek on their radar for some time.

"A farewell tour is something we've talked about doing for years, let's say roughly in the last five years," the guitarist told Rolling Stone in April. "It's just something the band's talked about at various times. At this point, the five of us have never sat down and said, 'It's time to do it.' So 'considering' is an appropriate word for that statement. A farewell tour is definitely not confirmed."

Perry, Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp will launch a North American summer tour with The Hollywood Vampires this Friday, July 1 in Bethlehem, PA.

Ozzy Osbourne wants to extend Black Sabbath farewell tour

photo: Ross Halfin

Black Sabbath will wrap up their farewell tour next February with a pair of shows in their hometown of Birmingham, UK, but frontman Ozzy Osbourne says he’d like to see the run extended to reach more fans before the final goodbye.

"Tony Iommi wants to do 80 shows. We're doing 80 shows. It's good enough," Osbourne tells Billboard. "I wouldn't mind extending the tour for another few gigs. There's a lot of people who won't get to see us, but I don't think it's going to happen."

The rocker is enjoying the farewell shows and has come to appreciate what they mean to both fans and the band.

"It's great. I'm having a blast with it," he explains. "Right now I'm OK with it. I'm sure as it starts counting down to five shows left or something, it's gonna be kind of emotional, I think.

"I mean, we started off as four guys from Aston who had a dream and it became true beyond our wildest dreams. And then we were manipulated, we were ripped off, we were conned, all of the above. We lost each other within each other, if you like. But it's great to have got this back just to end on a high note, y'know?"

Ozzy adds that he still has lots of rocking left to do when Sabbath’s career wraps up in Birmingham on February 4, 2017.

"It's not me that wants to retire; it's Black Sabbath. I'll be continuing my own musical thing," he says. "My wife is good at telling me partial information, y'know, but I know I'm not hanging 'em up for awhile. Being Ozzy Osbourne solo again is not a job. It's a passion. It's a love. It's the biggest, greatest love affair of my life."

Black Sabbath are currently playing shows across Europe; they’ll launch a final North American leg in August before hitting Latin America late in the year and starting the final 8-date UK/Ireland run in Dublin in late January.

Soundgarden album update

Chris Cornell says Soundgarden are continuing to work on material on the follow-up to 2012’s “King Animal.”

“Soundgarden is in the middle of writing songs,” Cornell tells the Hartford Courant while on a North American tour in support of his latest solo album, “Higher Truth.” “After this tour the songs will become real and we'll put an album out. There's much more to Soundgarden. I get to play with my band and I get to go solo. It's great for me.”

The latest news follows word from the singer last fall that the Seattle rockers had regrouped for the project.

"We're already working on new material for an album," said Cornell last August. "And then I've got several other irons in the fire and things going that I won't mention now. There's a lot of things coming in addition to ‘Higher Truth’, as well as a new Soundgarden album."

Following the completion of a spring tour across Europe, Cornell launched his summer series of solo acoustic shows in Clearwater, FL on June 16

Red Hot Chili Peppers debut The Getaway on US charts

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have debuted their latest album, “The Getaway”, at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200.

Billboard reports the project enters the chart with opening week sales of 118,000 equivalent album units (108,000 in traditional album sales).

It’s the seventh US top 10 album for the group, and third to hit the No. 2 slot following 2011’s “I’m With You” and 2002’s “By The Way”; the Chili Peppers notched one No. 1 album, “Stadium Arcadium”, in 2006.

“The Getaway” also debuts at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart, which ranks the top selling albums of the week.

Produced by Danger Mouse, the record marks the Los Angeles group’s first album in five years and was launched with the lead single and video for the track “Dark Necessities.”

The Chili Peppers recently guested on the latest episode of “Carpool Karaoke” on CBS-TV’s The Late Late Show with James Corden.

The band are currently playing festival dates across Europe.

Guns N’ Roses brought their Not In This Lifetime tour to FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland near Washington, D.C. on June 26.

Following the launch in Detroit on June 23, the second date on the group’s summer stadium tour of North America saw the reunited band perform at the home of the NFL's Washington Redskins.

The 25-song set included an instrumental take on the Derek And The Dominos classic “Layla” as a lead-in to “November Rain”, while the band dropped the “Use Your Illusion” tune “Don’t Cry” from the encore in place of the 1989 single “Patience.”

Prior to the show, Redskins owner Dan Snyder, head coach Jay Gruden and General Manager Scot McCloughan had a quick photo-op with Axl Rose backstage, which the team shared via their social media sites.

Guns N’ Roses will next perform at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO on June 29.

Deep Purple reschedule Swedish shows as drummer recovers from stroke

Deep Purple have rescheduled a pair of shows in Sweden that were postponed recently following news that drummer Ian Paice had experienced a stroke while on tour in Europe.

“On the morning of the 14th of June,” explained Paice, “I woke up to find that the right side of my body was feeling numb and I could not control my right hand and fingers. So I had myself admitted to hospital where I was diagnosed with having suffered a ‘mini stroke’, or TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack).”

“The hospital staff in Stockholm were amazing and started my treatment straight away,” he continued. “After both CT and MIR scans there was found to be no serious or permanent damage. As of this moment all I am suffering is a slightly numb right side of the face a tingling sensation in my right hand. My dexterity in the hand is coming back quickly and I fully expect to re commence touring next month. So now I have a set of tablets which have to be taken every day to ensure it doesn¹t happen again!.”

Paice is sharing an update on his progress with a message to fans.

"A big thank you to all the people who have been in touch with me expressing their concern about my health,” wrote the drummer. “I think you will appreciate that there have been too many to answer every one personally. So if I don't reply to you please accept my apologies, but there are only so many hours in a day! Also my one typing finger is having its own ‘event’ and is starting to get very sore.

“I knew I had a lot of friends around the world but never realised quite how many. Again thanks to you all and I will endeavour to keep you up to date with my progress which so far is great.”

Deep Purple have announced rescheduled dates for the pair of shows in Sweden: a performance at Liseberg in Gothenburg originally set for June 15 will now take place on July 1, while a June 14 show at Gröna Lund in Stockholm will happen on July 2.

The band recently completed recording the follow-up to 2013’s "Now What?!" with producer Bob Ezrin in Nashville, TN.

Steven Tyler performed on NBC-TV’s The Today Show on June 24 as he makes the rounds to promote the July 15 release of his debut solo album, “We’re All Somebody From Somewhere.”

Tyler will present the new music to fans during his first solo tour, “Out On A Limb”, which starts in Las Vegas on July 2.

VIDEO: Twisted Sister perform 1983 classic on Metal Meltdown live DVD

Twisted Sister perform their 1983 classic, “You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll”, in the latest preview to the forthcoming live package, “Metal Meltdown.”

The tune first appeared as the title track to the band’s second album; which went on to earn Gold status in the US for sales of 500,000 copies while the single charted in both the UK and Ireland.

Due July 22, “Metal Meltdown - Featuring Twisted Sister Live At The Hard Rock Casino - Las Vegas” presents the group’s complete concert, as well as Rockshow, a bonus documentary that takes fans through the band's 40-year career.

The performance captures the live debut of drummer Mike Portnoy with the group after he was brought in following the passing of A.J. Pero two months earlier at the age of 55 from a heart attack while playing on tour with Adrenaline Mob.

VIDEO: Guns N’ Roses open Not In This Lifetime tour in Detroit

Guns N’ Roses opened their “Not In This Lifetime” North American tour at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday and video from the show has surfaced.

The 2-month trek sees the reunited trio of Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan perform with a lineup that includes guitarist Richard Fortus, keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese, and drummer Frank Ferrer.

The Detroit appearance marks the return of Rose to GNR after he stepped in to assist AC/DC with a 13-date spring tour of Europe in place of Brian Johnson that wrapped up in Dusseldorf, Germany on June 15.

The singer is now fully back on his feet after wearing a walking cast for most of the AC/DC dates after breaking his left foot during GNR’s April 1 club gig at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, CA.

The 24-song set opened with the band’s 1987 classic “It’s So Easy” and, for the most part, remained similar to their spring shows in Las Vegas, Mexico City and at Coachella.

The group mixed classics with covers of tracks by The Stooges, Wings, Bob Dylan and The Who.

Seattle rockers Alice In Chains opened the show with a 40-minute set; they’ll be on hand to warm-up the first five dates of the tour.

Guns N’ Roses will next perform at FedEx Field in Washington, DC on June 26.

Jeff Beck issues lyric video for new single Live In The Dark

photo: Ross Halfin

Jeff Beck has issued a lyric video for “Live In The Dark”, the lead single from his forthcoming album, “Loud Hailer.”

The tune features vocals by London singer Rosie Bones, who Beck met through a chance meeting last year with guitarist Carmen Vandenberg at a birthday party for Queen drummer Roger Taylor that led to the trio’s collaboration.

"She [Vandenberg] invited me to one of their shows, and I was blown away," recalls Beck. "When we got together in January, I explained the subject matter I had in mind, we sat down by the fire with a crate of Prosecco and got right to it. The songs came together very quickly; five in three days."

Bones handles vocals on nine of the 11 songs on the set, which is rounded out by a pair of signature Beck instrumentals: “Pull It” and “Edna.”

Due July 15, “Loud Hailer” sees Beck produce his first record in six years alongside Filippo Cimatti, with bassist Giovanni Pallotti and drummer Davide Sollazzi filling out the lineup.

Beck will launch the project a series of summer US dates at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on July 19.

Led Zeppelin cleared in Stairway To Heaven copyright trial

Led Zeppelin have been cleared of copyright infringement in a trial over the creation of their signature 1971 song “Stairway To Heaven.”

A jury in a Los Angeles federal coural court case sided Thursday with the UK band in a 2014 suit brought by Randy California's estate and members of Spirit by trustee Michael Skidmore over claims the acoustic introduction to “Stairway” was lifted from their 1968 instrumental, “Taurus.”

"We are grateful for the jury's conscientious service and pleased that it has ruled in our favor, putting to rest questions about the origins of 'Stairway to Heaven' and confirming what we have known for 45 years,” said Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. “We appreciate our fans' support, and look forward to putting this legal matter behind us.”

The two-week trial saw Page, Plant and non-defendant John Paul Jones take the stand to deny exposure to “Taurus” while explaining the creation of “Stairway” at Headley Grange.

Music experts testified that both songs share a commonplace descending chromatic line that has existed for hundreds of years.

"At Warner Music Group, supporting our artists and protecting their creative freedom is paramount,” added the band’s record label. “We are pleased that the jury found in favor of Led Zeppelin, re-affirming the true origins of 'Stairway to Heaven'. Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest bands in history, and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are peerless songwriters who created many of rock's most influential and enduring songs."

Led Zeppelin Stairway To Heaven case goes to jury

The copyright infringement lawsuit over Led Zeppelin's signature song, “Stairway To Heaven,” is now in the hands of the jury as both sides presented closing arguments in a Los Angeles federal court on Wednesday.

The suit – brought by Randy California's estate and members of Spirit by trustee Michael Skidmore – claims the acoustic introduction to 1971’s “Stairway” was lifted from their 1968 instrumental, “Taurus.”

Courthouse News Service reports Skidmore's attorney Francis Malofiy asked jurors to award California a one-third songwriting credit and its accompanying financial rewards to the song alongside Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.

Malofiy asked the jury to award an amount in damages that is somewhere between the $58.5 million in recent gross revenue for music that included Led Zeppelin's 87-song catalog, and close to $7 million in revenue from "Stairway" alone – while the defendants held firm that the figure was closer to to $800,000.

Zeppelin attorney Peter Anderson said that Skidmore had failed to show that any member of Led Zeppelin had ever heard "Taurus."

He explained that music experts had testified that the introductions to both songs in question use a commonplace descending chromatic line that has "existed for hundreds of years" and is evident in numerous 21st Century pop songs including "My Funny Valentine" and The Beatles' "Michelle."

"I don't have to say [California] copied it from 'Michelle.' It belongs to everyone. It's a musical device," said Anderson.

The trial saw Page, Plant and non-defendant John Paul Jones take the stand to address their history and the song’s creation.

Jurors began deliberating on Wednesday morning after judge Gary Klausner delivered jury instructions.

VIDEO: Rob Zombie premieres Medication For The Melancholy

Rob Zombie is premiering a video for the track “Medication For The Melancholy” from his latest album, “The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser.”

The clip comes on the heels of the recently-issued “The Life And Times Of A Teenage Rock God”, and several other tunes from the set, which debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 with opening week sales of 41,000 units.

Produced by Chris "Zeuss" Harris, “Electric Warlock” features the rocker and his touring band of guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D and drummer Ginger Fish.

"I can easily say this is my favorite album yet... no joke,” raves Zombie. “Yeah I know everyone says that. But it is seriously our heaviest musical monster to date. Not since ‘Hellbilly Deluxe’ have I spent this long putting an album together. It was worth it."

Zombie is gearing up to launch a summer tour of North America with Korn that will begin in Greenwood Village, CO on July 19.
