Tom Petty’s cause of death revealed

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has determined that Tom Petty died last fall as a result of “multisystem organ failure” caused by an accidental drug overdose of several medications.

The Gainesville, FL singer passed away October 2 at the age of 66 in a Santa Monica, CA hospital after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.

The Los Angeles Times reports an autopsy found that Petty had several drugs in his system, including fentanyl, oxycodone, temazepam, alprazolam, citalopram, acetylfentanyl and despropionyl fentanyl.

Petty had been prescribed the drugs to treat emphysema, knee issues, a fractured hip and coronary artery atherosclerosis – a buildup of plaque that restricts blood flow to the arteries that supply the heart with blood.

In a joint statement by Petty’s widow, Dana, and daughter, Adria, the pair reveal the details from a meeting with representatives from the Medical Examiner’s Office that provide some context and background to the rocker’s loss.

“Our family sat together this morning with the Medical Examiner – Coroner’s office and we were informed of their final analysis that Tom Petty passed away due to an accidental drug overdose as a result of taking a variety of medications,” begin Dana and Adria. “Unfortunately Tom’s body suffered from many serious ailments including emphysema, knee problems and, most significantly, a fractured hip.

“Despite this painful injury, he insisted on keeping his commitment to his fans and he toured for 53 dates with a fractured hip and, as he did, it worsened to a more serious injury. On the day he died, he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break, and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication.

“We knew before the report was shared with us that he was prescribed various pain medications for a multitude of issues, including Fentanyl patches, and we feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident.”

“As a family,” the Petty’s continue, “we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion, and we hope in some way this report can save lives. Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury, or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.

“On a positive note, we now know for certain he went painlessly and beautifully exhausted after doing what he loved the most, for one last time, performing live with his unmatchable rock band for his loyal fans on the biggest tour of his 40-plus-year career. He was extremely proud of that achievement in the days before he passed."

“We continue to mourn with you and marvel at Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' incredible positive impact on music and the world. And we thank you all for your love and support over the last months,” they add. “Thank you also for respecting the memory of a man who was truly great during his time on this planet both publicly and privately. We would be grateful if you could respect the privacy of the entire Heartbreaker family during this difficult time.”

Petty was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Pacific Palisades, CA on October 16.

Petty and The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002, with the singer’s combined solo and group sales topping 80 million albums worldwide.

Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson updates band’s status

Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson is sharing an update on the band’s status in a new interview with The Globe And Mail.

Following a 2013 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Rush performed the final show of their 40th anniversary R40 Live tour at The Forum in Los Angeles on August 1, 2015, leaving fans to wonder if the Canadian rock legends would return at some point in the future.

“It's been a little over two years since Rush last toured,” explains Lifeson. “We have no plans to tour or record any more. We're basically done. After 41 years, we felt it was enough.

“But I've actually been busier lately than I have been in a while,”
he continued. “I'm writing a lot. I'm writing on four or five different little projects. I get these requests to do guitar work with other people. It's really a lot of fun for me. It's low pressure: I get to be as creative as I want to be and I can work a little outside of the box, which is really attractive to me.”

Lifeson will appear on Fu Manchu's new album, “Clone Of The Universe”, which is due next month; the rocker is featured on an epic 18-minute track called "Il Mostro Atomico."

Last month, Rush released an expanded 40th anniversary reissue of their 1977 album “A Farewell To Kings.”

Rush formed in 1968 in Toronto’s Willowdale neighborhood when Lifeson started a high school band that eventually included his classmate, Geddy Lee, on vocals, bass and keyboards; drummer Neil Peart, from St. Catharines, ON, joined the group in 1974.

Myles Kennedy streams Haunted By Design lyric video

Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy is streaming a lyric video for “Haunted By Design”, as the latest preview to his forthcoming debut solo album “Year Of The Tiger.”

Due March 9, Kennedy recorded the album with producer and longtime Alter Bridge associate Michael "Elvis" Baskette.

The rocker reveals the project is a record inspired by the loss of his father when he was a child.

"It’s probably the closest thing to a full-on concept record that I've ever written,” Kennedy tells Metal Wani. “I mean, the story is congruent throughout the entire... It basically tells a story from start to finish, and it documents when my father passed away when I was a kid and basically what happened after that with my mom, my brother and I — it tells that story. So it's a full-on concept from start to finish."

Previously previewed with a video for the title track, “Year Of The Tiger” will be issued on CD, LP and in digital formats.

Kennedy will launch his debut solo release on a newly-announced UK tour this spring.

The singer’s six-date UK run will open in Birmingham on March 17, and see stops in Nottingham, Glasgow, Manchester and Bristol before wrapping up in London on March 26.

VIDEO: Joe Perry launches solo album with all-star lineup in Los Angeles

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry performed alongside an all-star lineup at the sold-out record release show for his new solo effort, “Sweetzerland Manifesto”, at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles on January 16, and video from the event is streaming online.

Perry and his makeshift band – including members of Stone Temple Pilots, Extreme’s Gary Cherone, Robin Zander of Cheap Trick and vocalists Terry Reid and David Johansen – were joined by special guests Slash, Johnny Depp and former Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson during an 18-song set of Aerosmith classics, covers and tracks from Perry’s latest solo effort, which will be available January 19.

The evening opened with Cherone handling Perry’s “Let The Music Do The Talking” and a pair of Aerosmith classics (“Toys In The Attic” and “Pandora’s Box”) before the guitarist stepped up to the mic for his 2005 track, “Shakin’ The Cage.”

UK singer Terry Reid took on three songs from “Sweetzerland Manifesto” before surprise guest Robinson was at center stage for “Fortunate One”, which will be featured as a bonus track exclusive to the deluxe vinyl version of the album.

Depp hit the stage for a cover of the 1960s protest song, “Eve Of Destruction”, before Johansen performed a pair of tunes from the project and was followed by Zander doing the same.

All the players were on stage for The Beatles’ “Come Together” before Perry welcomed surprise guest Slash for a rousing encore of “Train Kept A Rollin’” that saw the Aerosmith rocker end the night by smashing his guitar.

Most of the lineup joined Perry for a performance during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV on January 10.

Perry’s first full studio record since 2009’s “Have Guitar, Will Travel” was recorded at Studio 1480 in Los Angeles and produced by the guitarist and Bruce Witkin, with additional help from longtime Aerosmith associate Jack Douglas, who co-wrote and co-produced a number of tracks.

VIDEO: Guns N’ Roses stream fall 2017 North American tour recap

Guns N’ Roses are streaming a video recap of their fall 2017 North American tour.

The 25-date run opened in Philadelphia, PA on October 8 and included multiple shows in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto before wrapping up with a marathon, almost 4-hour concert at The Forum in L.A. on November 29.

The band’s Not In This Lifetime reunion run is now among the top five biggest-selling concert tours in music history, according to Billboard.

The trio of Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan topped the $475 million mark in gross sales at the end of 2017 to place fourth on the all-time tour list, moving ahead of the fifth-place Roger Waters at $459 million but behind the top three: U2’s 360° stadium tour (2009-2011) sits at No. 1 with $736 million, followed by The Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang trek at $558 million (2005-2007), and Coldplay’s 2016-2017 shows at $523 million.

Launched in the spring of 2016, Guns N’ Roses have extended the reunion tour into a third year with the addition of summer 2018 concert dates across Europe.

Guns N’ Roses were named the No. 2 Rock News Artist Of The Year and delivered the No. 5 Rock News Story Of The Year as part of the 2017 hennemusic Rock News Awards.

U2 release Get Out Of Your Own Way video

U2 have released an animated video for the “Songs Of Experience” track “Get Out Of Your Own Way.”

The clip was directed by the Israeli graffiti collective Broken Fingaz Crew, whose provocative and groundbreaking fluorescent sketches were among the first street art in their native Haifa; the team also recently worked with U2 on a video for “American Soul.”

"The video addresses the current political situation,” says the Crew. “2017 for us was the year fascists worldwide felt confident enough to raise their heads again, encouraged by Donald Trump and other world leaders, who use people's fear to build more walls and segregation.

“The song is both a personal letter and a clarion cry to the global situation, and in the same way, we've combined our psychedelic pop style with political imagery; shot entirely analogue, using paper cut and stop motion animation techniques in collaboration with Adam Albo, who edited the video."

U2 launched “Songs Of Experience” last month with performances of both “Get Out Of Your Own Way” and “American Soul” on Saturday Night Live.

Already confirmed to begin a North American tour on May 2 in Tulsa, OK, U2 have just announced dates for a fall trek across Europe that will open in Berlin, Germany on August 31.

Tickets for the announced shows will go on sale from Friday, January 26 and U2.com subscribers will be first in line in a pre-sale beginning Thursday, January 18 at 10:00 am and running through Saturday, January 20 at 5:00 pm.

Judas Priest preview Firepower track Spectre

Judas Priest are streaming a snippet of the track, “Spectre”, from their forthcoming album “Firepower.”

Following the lead single, “Lightning Strike”, it’s the second tune previewed ahead of the March 9 release of the project, which was recorded last year with producers Tom Allom and Andy Sneap.

Judas Priest will launch a spring North American tour in support of their 18th album in Wilkes Barre, PA on March 13.

The metal icons were one of 19 nominees under consideration for entry into the 2018 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame; despite being one of five acts that earned support on the Rock Hall fan ballot, the group failed to make the final cut with their first nomination.

Frontman Rob Halford was informed of the band’s failure to make the cut for the Class of 2018 by the group’s management the day before the inductees were revealed, and he recently shared the rejection letter that Priest received from Rock Hall President/CEO Greg Harris during an interview with 100.7 KSLX in Phoenix, AZ

“Thank you for embracing your nomination for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame,” Halford quotes Harris in the letter. “While you didn't garner enough votes for induction this year, you were part of a very select group of Hall Of Fame nominees. Artists are frequently on the ballot multiple times before they are inducted. For example, Black Sabbath were nominated eight times before their induction, Patti Smith seven times, Solomon Burke nine times, and both the Beastie Boys and The Yardbirds were on the ballot three times before their respective inductions.

"If you are touring or simply traveling nearby, please visit our museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Our six floors of exhibitions tell the remarkable history of rock and roll and how it changed the world. You're part of that story and we'd love to share it with you. Again, congratulations on your nomination."

The 2018 Rock Hall inductees include The Cars, Dire Straits, Bon Jovi, The Moody Blues, Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

The 33rd Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, OH on April 14 and will be broadcast by HBO in the spring.

George Harrison tribute concert reissue announced

“Concert For George”, a 2002 tribute event in honor of George Harrison, will be reissued on Friday, February 23 to mark the late Beatles guitarist’s 75th birthday on February 25.

Organized by Eric Clapton and Olivia Harrison, the November 29, 2002 show at London’s Royal Albert Hall landed one year to the day after Harrison’s passing from lung cancer at the age of 58.

The evening featured George's songs, and music he loved, performed by a lineup that included Clapton, Joe Brown, Dhani Harrison, Jools Holland, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Monty Python, Tom Petty, Billy Preston, Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, Ringo Starr and many more.

"We will always celebrate George's birthday,” says Olivia, “and this year we are releasing Concert For George in a very special package in memory of a special man."

Directed by David Leland, “Concert For George” will be reissued as a Deluxe Edition Box Set, a 4-LP Box Set, plus new CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray combo packages.

Presented in a 12” by 12” hardbound book, the Deluxe Box Set – limited to 1000 copies worldwide – features the complete sound and film recordings from the concert on 4 180-gram audiophile LPs, 2 CDs, 2 DVDs and 2 Blu-rays, plus an opportunity to own a piece of the historic event, by way of a cutting from the original hand-painted on-stage tapestry used as the backdrop at the show.

The 4-LP Box Set includes the complete sound recordings from the evening, and features a special etching on side-8. This is the first time that all songs from the performance have been available on an audio configuration.

The DVD and Blu-ray feature the complete filmed concert, as well as the original theatrical version that also includes interviews with performers, rehearsal footage and behind-the-scenes material. The Blu-ray also adds an exclusive interview segment, "Drummers", where Starr and Jim Keltner add their personal thoughts on Harrison and the star-studded tribute.

“Concert For George” has been certified 8-times US platinum by the RIAA since its initial release as a 2-DVD set in November 2003, and it earned a 2004 Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video.

VIDEO: Royal Blood perform on The Late Late Show with James Corden

Royal Blood performed their current US single, “I Only Lie When I Love You”, on CBS-TV’s The Late Late Show with James Corden on January 16 and video from the program is streaming online.

The song is the second track issued from the sophomore effort, “How Did We Get So Dark?”, which debuted atop the UK charts upon its release last June to duplicate the success of the band’s 2014 self-titled record, the fastest-selling British rock debut album in their native country in three years.

Bassist/vocalist Mike Kerr says that he and drummer Ben Thatcher experimented with new sounds and techniques for their second studio effort.

"One thing we learned,” Kerr tells the BBC, “is we have quite a delicate sound and once you add things - the wrong things - our whole sound sort of shrivels. Or it capsizes and it doesn't sound like us anymore. We've realized a lot of the identity of our music is when me and Ben play together.

"Even the backing vocals - we did try having girls come in and sing, but it just didn't work. It had to be my voice. It had to be just about me and Ben."

Following a tour of Australia and New Zealand that begins in late April, Royal Blood will launch a spring US headlining trek in Brooklyn, NY on May 28.

The Eagles: Glenn Frey’s widow files wrongful death lawsuit

Cindy Frey has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan over the January 18, 2016 passing of her late husband, Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey.

Reuters reports Frey’s suit accuses the hospital and gastroenterologist Steven Itzkowitz of negligence for failing to properly treat the rocker’s ulcerative colitis, diagnose and treat infection, and advise of the risks and side effects from treatment.

The complaint alleges that as a result of the negligence, “Glenn Frey was rendered sick, sore, lame and disabled,” and suffered pain and mental anguish prior to his death from what The Eagles announced as “complications from acute ulcerative colitis, pneumonia and rheumatoid arthritis.”

Frey is seeking unspecified damages in the suit which, in this case, was filed just two days before the expiration of New York’s two-year statute of limitations for wrongful death cases.

State law requires lawyers to consult with doctors in medical malpractice actions before suing, to determine whether cases have merit.

In the days following Frey’s passing, Eagles manager Irving Azoff blamed the death in part on the medications he was taking.

“The colitis and pneumonia were side effects from all the meds,” explained Azoff. “He died from complications of ulcer and colitis after being treated with drugs for his rheumatoid arthritis which he had for over 15 years.”

Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner formed The Eagles in Los Angeles in 1971. With few lineup changes, the group went on to become one of the world's best-selling bands of all time with more than 150 million records sold.

Frey’s son, Deacon, and Vince Gill joined Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit in The Eagles touring lineup last year as the group returned to the concert stage; they’ll launch an extensive 2018 North American tour in Indianapolis, IN on March 12.

Queen, Aerosmith, Nirvana recordings among Grammy Hall Of Fame inductees

Legendary albums by Queen, Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix and singles by Aerosmith, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones are among the inductees into the 2018 Grammy Hall Of Fame.

Queen’s 1975 effort, “A Night At The Opera”, Nirvana’s 1991 smash, “Nevermind”, Jimi Hendrix’s 1970 set “Band Of Gypsys” and Mike Oldfield’s 1973 classic, “Tubular Bells”, are the rock albums selected for entry by The Recording Academy alongside singles by Aerosmith (“Dream On”), David Bowie (“Space Oddity”) and The Rolling Stones (“Paint It Black”).

The rockers are joined by a host of classic recordings that include works by Sam Cooke, The Four Tops, Johnny Cash, Linda Ronstadt, Public Enemy and Louis Armstrong, among others as part of the annual list of 25 records that are at least 25 years old and honored for their qualitative or historical significance.

"The Grammy Hall Of Fame strives to embody the changing climate of music throughout these past decades, always acknowledging the diversity of musical expression for which the Academy has become known," says Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the Recording Academy. "Iconic and inspiring, these recordings are an integral part of our musical, social, and cultural history, and we are proud to have added them to our growing catalog."

Queen’s fourth album, “A Night At The Opera” delivered the group’s groundbreaking classic, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, earning the group their first No. 1 UK single and first US Top 5 record.

The project’s inclusion in the Hall Of Fame is the second honor bestowed upon the band by the Grammys this year, following word that they’ll receive a Lifetime Achievement Award during a special presentation and concert this summer; joining the legendary rockers as recipients of the prestigious honor are Tina Turner, Neil Diamond, Emmylou Harris, The Meters, Louis Jordan and Hal Blaine.

Queen and singer Adam Lambert will perform two shows in Auckland, New Zealand next month before playing an 8-date Australian tour.

Jimi Hendrix streams Muddy Waters cover from Both Sides Of The Sky

The team behind Jimi Hendrix is streaming a previously-unreleased cover of the Muddy Waters classic, “Mannish Boy”, as the lead track from the iconic rocker’s forthcoming album “Both Sides Of The Sky.”

The tune was recorded by the trio that would come to be known as Band Of Gypsys – Hendrix, bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles – during their first-ever recording session on April 22, 1969 at the Record Plant in New York.

This lineup would go on to make its public debut during four performances at the city’s Fillmore East on New Year’s Eve 1969 and New Year’s Day 1970, from which the live albums “Band Of Gypsys” (1970) and “Machine Gun” (2016) are derived.

Due March 9, the 13-track “Both Sides Of The Sky” delivers 10 unreleased tunes and marks the third volume in a trilogy from the Hendrix archives, following 2010’s “Valleys Of Neptune” and 2013’s “People, Hell And Angels.”

Produced by Eddie Kramer alongside John McDermott and Janie Hendrix – the guitarist's sister and president of Experience Hendrix – the project includes guest appearances by Johnny Winter, Stepehen Stills, Lonnie Youngblood and original Jimi Hendrix Experience members Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding.

"It was amazing just to watch him in the studio or live,” explains Kramer. “The brain kicks off the thought process - it goes through his brain through his heart and through his hands and onto the guitar, and it's a seamless process. It's like a lead guitar and a rhythm guitar at the same time, and it's scary. There's never been another Jimi Hendrix, at least in my mind."

“Both Sides Of The Sky” will be issued via multiple formats, including CD, digital and a numbered, 180-gram audiophile double-vinyl.

Motorhead members to regroup for Lemmy tribute concerts

Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell has revealed that he and drummer Mikkey Dee plan to regroup with a lineup of special guests to perform a series of tribute concerts in honor of the band’s late founder Lemmy Kilmister.

“It's on the cards, but it's just gonna be a few select shows. We're not gonna be touring with it,” Campbell tells Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon. “We're gonna get these people involved and [we have to allow for] their schedules as well. We'll just do some special shows worldwide, which will be good – a tribute to Lem and to the band maybe, yeah.

“But it wouldn’t be an ongoing thing. Everyone’s too busy. But [we want to] do something special. We're still trying to work on that now.”

Lemmy died in December of 2015 from prostate cancer, a cardiac arrhythmia, and congestive heart failure at the age of 70, a few months after the release of the group’s 22nd studio album, “Bad Magic.”

“What I have said since Lemmy’s passing is, ‘Of course’,” Dee told Billboard last fall about the concept of tribute shows while promoting the group’s “Under Cover” collection, which featured Motorhead’s take on classics recorded by The Ramones, Metallica, Judas Priest, The Rolling Stones and more. “There is a possibility of doing that when the time is right to do it. If you love New York pizza and you haven’t had any New York pizza in several years, you’re going to crave that. One day there is maybe going to be a craving for something like this and when there is a craving for it, we have to do it in a proper way.”

Motorhead performed their final concert in Berlin, Germany on December 11, 2015 as part of a 40th anniversary tour.

With the January 10 passing of former Motorhead guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke at the age of 67 and the November 2015 death of drummer Phil Taylor at the age of 61, the trio that were featured on the band’s first five albums are now gone.

Dee officially joined the Scorpions in 2016 while Campbell will release “The Age Of Absurdity”, the debut album by Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons, on January 26.

VIDEO: Black Country Communion premiere epic track Wanderlust

Black Country Communion are premiering a video for “Wanderlust”, from their fourth album, “BCCIV.”

Clocking in at over 8 minutes, the longest track on the supergroup’s latest record mixes some of the band’s influences, which bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes says grew out of a jam with guitarist Joe Bonamassa.

“We’re always jamming, Joe and I,” Hughes tells the Blues Rock Review, “and I may have been tuning my bass up and he starts playing (hums riff) and I’m going, ‘Don’t stop! Carry on, what key is this?’ I found out we were in B and I’m, like, this is great and then I started to sing, ‘Oh, when I come around.’

“I know what’s coming. I know when there’s going to be a pre-chorus and when the chorus hit, I started to play these Beatle kind of chords in a rock version and we just knew this was a song. Of course, the Fleetwood Mac part is Joe being Joe, but as you know, Joe will say to you he’s just borrowing from somebody else as I borrow from X, Y or Z. Trust me, we all borrow from each other.”

Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Kevin Shirley, “BCCIV” sees the lineup of Hughes, Bonamassa, keyboardist Derek Sherinian and drummer Jason Bonham reunite following a split in 2013.

The group recently launched the project with a pair of rare live dates in the UK; they’ll next be seen performing on the 4th Keeping The Blues Alive cruise on the Norwegian Jade for a trip that runs from Miami, Florida to Montego Bay, Jamaica from February 26 to March 2.
