Led Zeppelin face retrial in Stairway To Heaven copyright case

Led Zeppelin are facing a retrial in the copyright infringement case over their 1971 anthem, “Stairway To Heaven.”

NBC News reports the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has overturned a 2016 jury verdict that found that the British band did not steal any original music from "Taurus," a 1968 track by the Los Angeles band Spirit.

"Taurus" was written by the late Spirit guitarist Randy Wolfe, better known as Randy California, whose trust brought the copyright infringement lawsuit.

Michael Skidmore, the trustee for Wolfe, has said Led Zeppelin lead vocalist Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page may have been inspired to write 1971's "Stairway" after hearing Spirit perform "Taurus" while the bands toured together in 1968 and 1969.

But the federal appeals court panel that overturned the 2016 ruling held that parts of the jury instructions in that trial were erroneous and prejudicial; the court said the judge erred by telling the jury that common musical elements, such as "descending chromatic scales, arpeggios or short sequences of three notes," were not protected by copyright. The court also said the jury should have been permitted to hear the album recording of "Taurus."

"Without a selection and arrangement instruction, the jury instructions severely undermined Skidmore's argument for extrinsic similarity, which is exactly what the jury found lacking,” wrote Circuit Judge Richard A. Paez for the court.

The two-week trial in 2016 saw Page, Plant and non-defendant John Paul Jones take the stand to deny exposure to “Taurus” while explaining the creation of “Stairway” at Headley Grange.

Music experts testified that both songs share a commonplace descending chromatic line that has existed for hundreds of years.

“Stairway To Heaven” appeared on the UK band’s 1971 album, “Led Zeppelin IV.”

One of the best-selling albums in music history, the project went on to sell more than 37 million copies worldwide, including 23 million in the US alone.

Led Zeppelin launched their 50th anniversary earlier this month with the release of the remastered soundtrack to the concert film, “The Song Remains The Same.”

On October 9, the iconic hard rock group will publish “Led Zeppelin By Led Zeppelin”, the first and only official illustrated book to be produced in collaboration with the members of the band.

VIDEO: Steve Perry previews Traces album return

Steve Perry can be seen talking about the making of his solo album return, “Traces”, in a newly-released video ahead of the project’s release on October 5.

Introduced by the lead single “No Erasin’”, the set marks the legendary Journey singer’s first solo project since 1994's “For The Love Of Strange Medicine.”

“When I left years ago, I was pretty toasty, pretty done,” Perry explains. “Music and me were having problems together. It was just something I wasn’t going to do if my heart wasn’t in it…so I walked.

“I honestly had no intentions of coming back to music,”
he continues. “Music showed up again. It just came back to me. My love for it started to come back. So once I started that process, I got a little uncomfortable thinking ‘oh boy, I’m waking up some demons'…but I made peace with almost all of them; there was no other way to make the record, really.”

Perry recorded “Traces” at his home studio – with only strings done at Capitol Records – alongside co-producer Thom Flowers.

Among the ten songs on the set is a cover of The Beatles’ “I Need You” from 1965’s “Help!”, which was originally written and sung by guitarist George Harrison.

The Beatles preview White Album reissue with Back In The U.S.S.R. streams

The Beatles are streaming multiple versions of “Back In The U.S.S.R.” as a preview to the upcoming 50th anniversary reissue of The White Album.

Fans can hear the new 2018 stereo mix of the song by producer Giles Martin and mix engineer Sam Okell, an instrumental backing track from studio sessions, and an early acoustic version from the Esher demo series.

Due November 9, The Beatles will release multiple expanded versions of their self-titled 1968 double album – commonly known as “The White Album.”

The project will issued in a 7-disc Super Deluxe box set package, a 3CD Deluxe edition and a 2LP vinyl version, with all formats presenting a new 2018 remix of the landmark record.

“The White Album” debuted and/or reached the top of the charts in countries around the world upon its original release, while it went on to earn 19x Platinum status in the US for sales of 9.5 million copies.

Much of the material for the record was written while The Beatles were on a retreat with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India in early 1968.

“We had left Sgt. Pepper’s band to play in his sunny Elysian Fields and were now striding out in new directions without a map,” says Paul McCartney in his written introduction for the new releases.

Led Zeppelin mark 50th anniversary with new digital releases

Led Zeppelin are continuing their 50th anniversary celebrations with the immediate release of three new digital-only packages.

On September 27, 1968, John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant convened in Olympic Studios in London to begin recording their debut album as Led Zeppelin; a mere 36 hours in the studio followed and “Led Zeppelin” was complete. Produced by Page, the album was released in January 1969 and launched one of the most legendary catalogs in rock history.

To celebrate this historic golden anniversary, the band have unveiled three new digital-only releases today on all digital download and streaming platforms.

“Led Zeppelin x Led Zeppelin” is a comprehensive, career-spanning 30-track collection (see song list below) traversing all eight of the band’s landmark studio albums including definitive tracks such as “Immigrant Song”, “Whole Lotta Love”, “Kashmir”, “Ramble On” and “Stairway To Heaven.” The set also includes the Sunset Sound Mix of “Rock And Roll,” making its digital debut after being released for the first time earlier this year on Record Store Day as a limited edition 7-inch vinyl single, which is now the best-selling release in Record Store Day history.

“An Introduction To Led Zeppelin” serves as a 10-track entry point to the group and features all the previously mentioned classic songs along with “Black Dog”, “Good Times Bad Times”, “Going To California” and “Over The Hills And Far Away.”

The final release is the digital version of the band’s first ever Record Store Day release, previously available earlier this year as a limited edition 7" vinyl single. The two-track set features the digital debut of the Olympic Studios Mix of “Friends” a stripped down version without the orchestration of the final mix, along with the aforementioned “Rock And Roll” (Sunset Sound Mix).

Megadeth tease inaugural MegaCruise

Megadeth are teasing a forthcoming announcement about their first-ever Megacruise event next year.

“MegaCruise: Thrashing Through The Pacific 2019” is the message shared across the thrash band’s social media sites while inviting fans to sign up for the mailing list at megacruise.com.

As fans await further details about the cruise, Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine recently confirmed that the group have been in songwriting mode for a 2019 follow-up to 2016’s “Dystopia.”

“Yes, actually, we are,” Mustaine confirmed to Guitar World about the work-in-progress. “We have been for a few weeks now. All the band members are at home writing stuff and putting it in the same spot, keeping all the riffs centralized in one place. And anybody can access anybody’s stuff. And then once we’re done I’ll start assembling everything.”

“Dystopia” debuted at No.3 on the US Billboard 200 upon its release while the album’s title track won the band their first-ever Grammy Award in the Best Metal Performance category at the 2017 event.

This November, bassist David Ellefson will publish "More Life With Deth" as the follow-up to his 2013 memoir "My Life With Deth."

Megadeth are celebrating their 35th anniversary this year.

Dickey Betts recovering from brain surgery following accident

Former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts is recovering following brain surgery last Friday after injuring himself recently in an accident at his Sarasota, FL home.

“Dickey Betts and his family want everyone to know that his surgery was a success,” read a post by his manager David Spero on social media sites for both the Dickey Betts Band and The Allman Brothers Band. “The outpouring of support from all over the world has been overwhelming and amazing. We are so appreciative. Thank you all so much for your wonderful thoughts and prayers. We will keep you updated.”

Spero revealed last week that the guitarist was hospitalized after injuring himself while playing with his dog in the backyard when he slipped and hit his head, referring to the incident as a ”freak accident.”

The Allman Brothers shared the latest news on Betts via Facebook on Tuesday, writing: “An update from David Spero: Donna just texted me that Dickey is ‘Off the respirator and doing great! Talking, laughing and, of course, complaining!’ We thank you all for your love and prayers. He still has a ways to go.”

A cofounding member of the Allman Brothers Band, Betts wrote the group’s only US Top 10 hit with 1973’s “Ramblin’ Man”, while the 1973 instrumental, “Jessica”, won them a Grammy Award in 1996; he served several stints with the legendary southern rockers before leaving for good in 2000.

Betts, who had recently returned to live action this year, was forced to postpone a series of concerts last month after suffering what doctors referred to as a “mild stroke”; Spero confirmed that all scheduled fall dates would be cancelled following the injury as the musician deals with recovery in the months ahead.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason announces UK tour

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason will perform vintage material by the legendary UK band on a spring 2019 UK tour.

Currently set to wrap up a fall European and UK trek with his band, Saucerful Of Secrets, this weekend, Mason has announced a spring series of five UK dates that will begin in Cardiff next April and end with two nights at The Roundhouse in London.

Tickets for the new shows will go on sale Friday, September 28 at 10 AM local time via thesaucerfulofsecrets.com.

Billed as Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets – after the group’s second album – the drummer is joined by a lineup that includes Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp, Lee Harris of the Blockheads, bassist Guy Pratt and composer Dom Beken, a collaborator with late Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright.

“This is a unique opportunity to experience Pink Floyd’s celebrated and significant early body of work played live including songs from albums The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and A Saucerful Of Secrets,” said the group in a released statement ahead of a spring 2018 UK club tour. “Very few bands are as culturally important as Pink Floyd. They are one of the best-selling music artists of all time and Nick Mason is a founder and the only constant member of the band performing on all of their albums as well as all of their live shows.”

Mason and Pink Floyd released their final album, “The Endless River”, in 2014.

The drummer recently released a box set collection of his solo albums entitled “Unattended Luggage”; the limited-edition offering compiles the rocker’s 1981 release, “Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports,” 1985’s “Profiles” and 1987’s “White Of The Eye” soundtrack in both 3CD and 3LP vinyl packages for the first time in over 20 years.

Metallica performed their 1988 classic, “Blackened”, at the Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 13, and the band are streaming professional footage from the event.

According to CBC News, the band set an attendance record by playing before more than 17,000 fans at the Canadian venue.

Metallica also donated $10,000 to the city's food bank, Winnipeg Harvest, as they have done on other stops on the WorldWired tour in support of “Hardwired…To Self-Destruct.”

Ramones stream rare Road To Ruin video for She’s The One

The Ramones are streaming a previously-unreleased video for “She’s The One”, to promote the newly-released expanded 40th anniversary reissue of their 1978 album, “Road To Ruin.”

The song from the New York band’s fourth record followed the lead tune, “Don’t Come Close, and a cover of “Needles And Pins” as the third single from the set, which peaked at No. 103 on the US Billboard 200.

The 2018 reissue presents an original and new mix of the album alongside a previously-unreleased recording of the group’s entire 1979 New Year’s Eve concert that was mixed live-to-air on WNEW-FM by producer Ed Stasium and sourced from Tommy Ramone’s original mixing board console cassette.

“Road To Ruin” saw the introduction of drummer Marky Ramone after founding member Tommy exited the lineup to oversee production and songwriting for the group.

Filmed at Miami’s Joe Robbie Stadium on November 25, 1994 and broadcast as a pay-per-view event, the material was first issued as “Voodoo Lounge Live” on VHS video the following year before an edited version was delivered on DVD in 1998.

The package adds five songs that were captured at Giants Stadium in New Jersey early in the trek that were a part of a VHS video called “Live Voodoo Lounge” that was offered for sale during the tour.

“Voodoo Lounge Uncut” will be available in multiple formats, including Blu-ray/2-CD, DVD/2-CD, limited-edition 3LP red vinyl and digital audio and video.

Ahead of the 1994 package, The Rolling Stones will release a 50th anniversary edition of their 1968 documentary, “Sympathy For The Devil”, on October 5.

Directed by Jean-Luc Godard, the film – originally titled “One Plus One” for the European market – captures the Stones working on and recording their iconic opening track from “Beggars Banquet” while presenting scenes on contemporary politics and social issues of the era.

Slash releases animated live action video for Driving Rain

Slash featuring Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators have released a live action, animated video for “Driving Rain”, the lead single from their new album “Living The Dream.”

"The idea behind doing an animated video for ‘Driving Rain’ is mostly due to the dark subject matter of the song influencing directors to come up with very dramatic, dark and sullen regular live action treatments that weren’t any fun at all (no offense to those guys),” explains Slash. “So, I wanted to create something that could be tongue-in-cheek and yet still be dark with live-action animation. We're all big fans of Stoopid Buddy and they came up with a great concept and treatment. We love the video and it came out fn’ brilliant. Fyi, no puppets were harmed during the making of this video."

“Our whole team at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios was beyond excited to work with Slash, Myles, and those hard rocking Conspirators,” adds Creative Director and Co-Founder John Harvatine IV. “We had a blast creating a dramatic heart-pounding music video with rag-doll-like rod puppets and adrenaline-filled RC Jeeps. From this moment forward, ‘Driving Rain’ is now the Citizen Kane of music videos!”

The newly-released “Living The Dream” was produced by Michael “Elvis” Baskette (Alter Bridge, Iggy Pop, Incubus), who previously teamed up with the Guns N' Roses rocker on 2014’s “World On Fire.”

Slash and the band are currently playing dates on a fall tour of North America that will be followed by a recently-announced early 2019 tour of the UK and Europe.

Tremonti announce fall tour of the UK and Europe

Alter Bridge-offshoot Tremonti have announced dates for a fall tour of the UK and Europe in support of their latest album, “A Dying Machine.”

The 6-week, 24-show run will open in Lisbon, Portigal on November 4 and include a 5-concert UK trek before it wraps up in Amsterdam on December 10; joining Tremonti for the fall series are The Raven Age and Disconnected.

Tickets and VIP packages are available now via marktremonti.com and the usual outlets.

Tremonti’s fourth studio record, “A Dying Machine” is their first concept album, with a story built around the co-existence of humans and fabricated beings at the turn of the next century.

Frontman and guitarist Mark Tremonti is turning the tale into a full-length work of fiction with the help of American author John Shirley.

“For years, I thought how great it would be to publish a book,” explains the guitarist, “and I get to kill two birds with one stone and do an album with a book. It just seemed like the perfect time. The stars aligned.”

Tremonti are currently playing dates on a month-long US tour.

The Beatles announce 50th anniversary editions of The White Album

The Beatles will release multiple expanded versions of their self-titled 1968 double album – commonly known as “The White Album” – on November 9.

All 50th anniversary reissues of the band’s legendary ninth album will present a 2018 stereo mix of the set by producer Giles Martin and mix engineer Sam Okell, marking the first time the project has been remixed and presented with additional demos and session recordings.

A 7-disc Super Deluxe box set (see track list below) adds the “Esher” demos and additional recording from the album’s sessions alongside a Blu-ray of mixes that includes a surround sound version; a 3CD Deluxe package includes the stereo mix and Esher demos; and, a 2LP vinyl edition delivers the new stereo mix.

“In remixing ‘The White Album,’ we’ve tried to bring you as close as possible to The Beatles in the studio,” explains Martin in his written introduction for the new edition. “We’ve peeled back the layers of the ‘Glass Onion’ with the hope of immersing old and new listeners into one of the most diverse and inspiring albums ever made.”

“The White Album” debuted and/or reached the top of the charts in countries around the world upon its original release, while it went on to earn 19x Platinum status in the US for sales of 9.5 million copies.

This summer, The Beatles marked the 50th anniversary of the 1968 animated film, “Yellow Submarine”, with a return to cinemas across North America, the UK and Ireland.

Directed by George Dunning, the film is based upon the song of the same name from the band’s 1966 album, “Revolver.”

Metallica announce European tour

Metallica have expanded their WordWired tour in support of “Hardwired…To Self-Destruct” with a newly-announced series of shows in Europe next year.

“We promised we would be back . . . it’s the return of the European summer vacation!,” says Metallica. “Following the attendance breaking indoor arena run that ended in May of this year, we are psyched to announce that we will be returning to Europe in May of next year to do an outdoor run of our own shows, primarily in stadiums, but also the occasional park and even a castle thrown in for good measure!

“Kicking off May 1, 2019 in Lisbon, Portugal, the tour will visit 25 cities across 20 countries including many cities we did not stop in on the most recent excursion: Milan, Zürich, Dublin, Berlin, Moscow, Warsaw, Bucharest, Göteborg and Brussels (first time since 1988!) are all on the itinerary this summer. We also have three firsts (go figure!) with shows in Trondheim Norway, Hämeenlinna Finland, and Tartu, Estonia.

“Joining us for the festivities will be Ghost and Bokassa.”

“This tour also marks the appearance of another first in Europe with the Wherever I May Roam Black Ticket, a wildly popular addition to our menu of options for the current North American tour,” adds the band. “The Black Ticket is your one-stop shop; a single ticket that allows you Golden Circle access to any Metallica show on the 2019 European tour. Pick your city from A(msterdam) to Z(ürich), make a reservation online no less than 48 hours before the gig and you're in!

“A limited number of 750 of these Black Tickets will be available for 598 Euro and you can get yours by visiting CIDEntertainment.com or by clicking any of the European “Enhanced Experiences” links in the Tour Section of Metallica.com.”

Fan Club presales begin Tuesday, September 25 at 10 a.m. CEST for Legacy Members and 11 a.m. CEST for Fifth Members, with general public tickets on sale Friday, September 28 at 10 AM local time via the usual outlets.

During their current fall tour of North America, Metallica will release multiple 30th anniversary editions of their 1988 album, “…And Justice For All”, on November 2.

The remastered reissue will be available in multiple configurations, including a Standard Double 180 gram LP, Standard CD, 3 CD Expanded Edition, cassette, Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set and digitally as a Standard album (available to stream and download), an Expanded Edition (available for download only), and a Digital Deluxe Box Set (available for streaming and download).
