Billboard reports that the thrash outfit’s self-titled “Megadeth” record has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart after opening week sales of 73,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Jan. 29, according to Lumin; the bulk of that sum were pure album sales (purchases of physical and digital copies of the album), totaling 69,000.
The album – which also debuts at No. 1 on Top Album Sales – was co-produced by band founder Dave Mustaine and Chris Rakestraw and marks the follow-up to 2022's “The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!”
Megadeth made its Billboard 200 chart debut in 1986 and has placed 23 albums on the ranking through its career. Until this week, the group had gone as high as No. 2, with 1992’s “Countdown to Extinction.”
The band will launch their farewell tour in North America with a cross-country headlining tour of Canada starting February 15 in Victoria, BC.
Mustaine formed Megadeth in Los Angeles in 1983; the band has gone on to sell more than 50 million records worldwide.
