Watch Jon Lord play Deep Purple classic on piano

Ex-Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord is revisiting his "Sarabande" suite from 1975, performing it live this fall for the very first time in its entirety, and in the same running order as the original recording.

One of Lord’s most successful and most loved orchestral works, Sarabande was recorded in Oer-Erckenschwick near Cologne in 1974 with the now defunct Philharmonica Hungarica orchestra conducted by Eberhard Schoener.

The original recording also featured Andy Summers on guitar (he later joined The Police), Pete York on drums, Mark Nauseef on percussion (he later played drums with Ian Gillan Band and Thin Lizzy) and Paul Karass on bass.

Lord’s performance of the suite premiered in Budapest on Saturday (18), and he turned some heads during rehearsals for the show: ignoring the keyboards in the room, he decided to try out the Purple classic, “Child In Time,” on piano (at the concert itself, Jon played the song on Hammond organ).

Singer Kasia Laska was at hand with her camera to capture the moment…

Lord is on tour across Europe this fall for several shows in support of his latest classical effort, “To Notice Such Things.” While not all performances on the tour will feature Sarabande, he will play the suite, again, at shows in Sofia, Bulgaria on October 30 and Essen, Germany on November 15.
