Van Halen: rare 1978 live footage surfaces

A little more rare footage of Van Halen has surfaced thanks to the folks at EliteWorks, who are promoting their classic rock-focused eBay auctions.

I say “a little more” for a reason: the footage is a news report on the 1978 Texxas Jam and, while there is a short glimpse of Van Halen on stage, there’s actually far more live VH concert audio in the background of the report than what you get visually.

Regardless, the video is being billed as the earliest known live footage of Van Halen – shot in July of 1978 – just 5 months after their self-titled debut was released.

The 32-year old segment was aired by WFAA-TV in Dallas, and mostly deals with the conditions at the show – from the intense heat to tripped-out fans to security issues.

Earlier this week, EliteWorks shared rare 1981 VH live footage – check it out here.
