Green Day begin recording new album

Work on a new album by Green Day is underway.

Billie Joe Armstrong tweeted the news to fans on Tuesday, saying:

“Happy Valentine's day! Officially started recording the new record today. It's F*** TIME!!!!”

The follow-up to 2009’s “21st Century Breakdown” is expected to be a sonic return to earlier Green Day music, with more straightforward, less political songs as the band moves away from its last two concept albums, including the 2004 smash “American Idiot.”

Last fall, the band debuted a new song, “Carpe Diem,” at a show in San Francisco, which may symbolize the direction of the new record – IF it makes the album.
