Metallica guitarist talks timeline for new music

This week, Metallica announced plans to release “Quebec Magnetic,” a live package based on two shows the band performed in Quebec City in 2009.

The project will be released December 10 on Metallica’s own as-yet-to-be-announced label; read more about it here.

The band is also juggling work on their 3D film, which will include footage from Metallica’s summer run of shows in Mexico City, as well as some Canadian dates in Edmonton and Vancouver this fall.

In addition to having these deadlines, guitarist Kirk Hammett tells Billboard that new music is on the horizon.

"We're going to seriously start thinking about making a new album soon,” says Hammett, currently promoting his “Too Much Horror Business” book. “We have tons of ideas, and that really is never a problem. We never have a lack of ideas -- if anything, the problem is we have too many ideas. But, yeah... it's something we're gonna start thinking pretty seriously about here. In about a couple months or so we're gonna seriously start working it out."

This Saturday, Metallica are stepping in to replace Green Day at the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience in New Orleans, following news of singer Billie Joe Armstrong’s current stint in rehab.
