Metallica closed out the 2013 edition of their Orion Music + More festival Sunday night at Belle Isle in Detroit, MI.
The Detroit Free Press reports Metallica’s set was, as expected, the weekend’s showpiece, a two-hour shot of unadulterated metal that included concert staples (“For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Master of Puppets”) alongside lesser-played material like “The Day That Never Comes,” “Carpe Diem Baby” and the encore cover of “Turn The Page,” by Detroit’s own Bob Seger.
The sun was still out when the set began at 8:20 p.m. By the time the band rolled into a reliably epic “One,” the darkness invited a slew of fireworks and lasers from the stage, as Metallica once again showed it knows how to man a big stage like few others. It was a premium ending to a festival that had found its momentum.
As the weekend wrapped up, Orion felt like a festival still in search of an identity — not quite a headbangers paradise, not quite the mini-Coachella envisioned by some. But personality can come with time, and if Detroit is lucky, 2013 was about getting Orion’s feet into Belle Isle’s ground for the long run.

Metallica played a surprise afternoon set on Saturday, performing their 1983 album, “Kill ‘Em All,” in its entirety.
The surprise began when guitarist James Hetfield came on stage to introduce a mystery band on the Orion bill named Dehaan.
