David Bowie named Best Dressed Briton in history

David Bowie has been voted the best-dressed Briton in history in a recent poll by BBC History Magazine, winning the title with 48.5 per cent of the votes.

Bowie was one of 10 individuals nominated by leading academics and fashion experts in the October issue of BBC History Magazine for their sartorial style and impact on British fashion history.

Other contenders for the title were Queen Elizabeth I; Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire; and original dandy Beau Brummell, a fashion icon who reputedly spent six hours a day getting ready. The trio received 13.6 per cent, 9.5 per cent and 8.4 per cent of the votes respectively.

Bowie was nominated by designer Wayne Hemingway, who said, "Bowie has profoundly influenced so many of us. The first concert I went to on my own was David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane tour at King George’s Hall in Blackburn in 1973. After the gig, I went out, got my hair 'feathered', bought a tight-fitting canary yellow T-shirt from Clobber and Bowie's album from Ames Record Bar. The next day we read in the Evening Telegraph that he [Bowie] had been banned from Blackburn for wearing one of his costume changes – the white sumo knickers. We all wanted to get banned too.”

"Here was a creative genius who understood art and design, looked cool, inspired us and upset the establishment,” he added. “All these attributes lead to things that drive humankind forward… change"

Bowie will reissue his acclaimed 2013 album, “The Next Day”, this fall in an expanded package that will feature videos from the project and unreleased songs.

Due November 4 (November 5 in North America), “The Next Day Extra” is a 3-disc set that includes the original 14-track CD, a 10-track CD of bonus tracks and a DVD of the four promotional films made for the album: “Where Are We Now?”, “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)”, “The Next Day” and “Valentine’s Day.”

The 10-track bonus CD includes four previously unreleased tracks, two new mixes and “God Bless The Girl”, the track that was only released on the Japanese issue of “The Next Day”. The remaining three tracks gather up the bonus tracks from the deluxe version of the album.

The package will also feature a lyric booklet and a book of stills from the promo videos.
