Metallica’s James Hetfield was honored by Little Kids Rock during the organization's 2013 Rockin’ The Bay Benefit event at the headquarters of Facebook in Menlo Park, California on Saturday, and video from the event has surfaced.
Hetfield received the "Livin' The Dream Award", named in honor of Josef Desimone, head chef at Facebook, who supported Little Kids Rock and passed away this past summer in a motorcycle accident.
"We’re presenting James with this special award as a way to not only recognize his support of Little Kids Rock over the years, but also his role as an inspirational presence in a band that has revolutionized and defined a music genre," said David Wish, Little Kids Rock founder and Executive Director.
Hetfield joined the kids for a jam on Metallica’s 1991 classic, “Enter Sandman.”
Little Kids Rock mission is to restore and revitalize music education in disadvantaged public schools across the United States.
The organization makes this possible by training teachers to teach their students to perform, improvise and compose the music kids love - pop, rock, reggae, funk, blues, rap and hip-hop. Little Kids Rock also provides all the instruments and resources necessary for teachers in underfunded public schools to reverse the trend of budget cuts by restoring and revitalizing music programs for their students.
What began as an informal project led by a handful of volunteers has since catapulted onto the national stage, revitalizing modern public school music education. Today, Little Kids Rock is one of the leading providers of free musical instruments and instruction in the U.S., reaching more than 74,000 disadvantaged students in 25 cities across the nation... and expanding to more schools and cities.
