VIDEO: Mastodon stream Emperor Of Sand documentary

Atlanta rockers Mastodon are streaming a full-length documentary on the making of their 2017 album, “Emperor Of Sand”, following news that the project received a pair of nominations for the 60th annual Grammy Awards event next month.

“Earlier this year, we released a 12-part series showing the making of our album ‘Emperor of Sand’,” says the band. “We’ve cut it all together, added over 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage and turned it into a documentary! This is a deep look into the making of the album and the inspiration behind the music.

“With the Grammy nominations Emperor of Sand has received, we thought it was the perfect time to release it. We hope you enjoy the documentary. If you do, feel free to share it! Thanks to Jimmy Hubbard helping us put this together!”

“Emperor Of Sand” – which debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 in April – will compete at the Grammys for “Best Rock Album” alongside records by Metallica, Nothing More, Queens Of The Stone Age and The War On Drugs.

In the “Best Metal Performance” category, the band’s “Sultan’s Curse” is joined by tracks from fellow nominees August Burns Red, Body Count, Code Orange and Meshuggah.

The 60th annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS from Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday, January 28.

Mastodon recorded their seventh studio effort with producer Brendan O’Brien at the Quarry in Kennesaw, Georgia last year.

"'Emperor of sand' is like the grim reaper," says drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. "Sand represents time. If you or anyone you know has ever received a terminal diagnosis, the first thought is about time. Invariably, you ask, 'How much time is left?'

"There is a tie, a concept that goes between them,”
adds Dailor about the album’s theme. “The last couple of years have been not... there's been some illness within the bands' family, there's been a bunch of cancer. So the whole album is sort of all about cancer basically. Well, not literally. It's a big story that sort of roped to go along with it. It takes place in the desert."

Currently playing shows across Europe, Mastodon will wrap up their 2017 live schedule in London, UK on December 10.
