Metallica to open Chase Center with San Francisco Symphony performance

Metallica will team up with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra to open the new Chase Center in San Francisco, CA on September 6.

Billed as S&M² (Symphony and Metallica 2) in honor of the 20th Anniversary of the pairing’s 1999 live performance recording “S&M”, the fall 2019 event will mark the inaugural event at the city’s new arena and future home of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.

Streamed live on social media by Metallica, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich appeared at the official Chase Center news conference on Monday alongside San Francisco Mayor London Breed and legendary conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, who will kick off his final season as San Francisco Symphony Musical Director with a special appearance conducting a portion of the show.

"There's more people on stage,” Hetfield told the crowd about the shared experience. “And there's actually real musicians on stage. And we're a lot more nervous. But it adds to the power. It adds to the opportunities for dynamics, for creating moods with the music, bringing people in, walls of sound – all kinds of great opportunities added by having a symphony along with you, along for the ride.

"It's a beautiful opportunity, and we're super proud that, after 38 years, there's still cool things like this on the horizon for us, and we're still able to explore and have some fun with some new friends."

Presales for Fan Club members begin Tuesday, March 19 with the Legacy Member sale beginning at 9 AM Pacific Time and the Fifth Member sale beginning at 10 AM Pacific Time; general public tickets will go on sale Friday, March 22 at 10 AM Pacific Time at chasecenter.com and the usual outlets.

Metallica just wrapped up a recently-completed North American arena leg of their WorldWired trek and will return to live action on a European tour that will begin in May.
