Motley Crue celebrate 40th anniversary

Motley Crue celebrated their 40th anniversary on January 17 with a series of social media posts.

"40 years ago today in 1981 we started @motleycrue outta Hollywood California,” shared Nikki Sixx on Instagram. "I am beyond grateful to of [sic] done this journey with my brothers @thevinceneil @mr.mickmars and @tommylee. The places we've travelled to around the world together, the songs we've written, the ÖVER the top live shows and of course 4 generations of fans.

"Wherever I may be in the world when a possible non rock fan asks me 'Are you in a band?' and I tell them Motley Crue they always light up and say 'Oh, I know your music.' Beyond everything else those words mean the most. The SONGS.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my brothers and to all the fans. And to so many many people along the way that kept this old warhorse rocking. MORE TO COME........."

"Happy 40th my dudes.... what a f**king ride hey!?!,” wrote Tommy Lee on Twitter. “Like a rollercoaster we been up down and all around this damn world touching hearts and many other parts hahah of people all around the globe! Cheers to touching more!!!!"

"Happy Birthday to my brothers! 40 years!!,” added Vince Neil on social media. “A lifetime of memories!!"

It was January 17, 1981 when Motley Crue formed after Sixx left the band London and began rehearsing with Lee and vocalist/guitarist Greg Leon (who later left); the pair then added guitarist Bob Deal aka Mick Mars before Neil accepted an offer to join (after turning them down) in April, and the group released their debut album, “Too Fast For Love”, just seven months later.

In sync with the anniversary, the group invited fans to sign a birthday card on Facebook to mark the occasion, and shared an anniversary video online.

Motley Crue are set to team up with Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts later this year for a US stadium tour that was postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic; the three-month series is scheduled to open in Nashville, TN on June 19.
