U2 to play American Idol finale

Hey, if Aerosmith won’t do it, someone else will.

U2 have confirmed that they will play the American Idol finale this Wednesday evening.

Billboard reports that, backstage at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, U2's longtime manager (and equal business partner), Paul McGuinness, revealed that the group would be rehearsing for the Idol finale on Monday before performing on the show two days later. In between the rehearsal and performance, U2 will perform at Salt Lake City's Rice-Eccles Stadium on Tuesday.

U2's Idol performance will be part of the finale that reveals whether country singers Scotty McCreery or Lauren Alaina is the season 10 winner, as voted by viewers.

Here’s a weird twist to this story: U2’s official website posted an announcement Monday saying the band is NOT playing the Idol finale.

So...which is it, guys?

Here's McGuinness talking to Billboard about the Idol appearance; the subject comes up about 2:10 into the clip.
