Guns N’ Roses: Current lineup not welcome at Reading, Leeds festivals

The annual Reading and Leeds festivals are on schedule for late August this year, as usual, with headliners Foo Fighters, Kasabian and The Cure.

While talking up this year’s events, organizer Melvin Benn tells NME that he has ruled out booking the current line-up of Guns N' Roses again, but says he'd love to get the band's original line-up to play the event.

"I wouldn’t have the current line-up, certainly not at the moment. It doesn’t feel right," said Benn.

"Of course if it was the original line-up, I would definitely consider it and if they could tell the time, it would be fantastic,” he added. “With the original line-up it would be something very special. We’d have to give them all a watch each, but we’d certainly try to get them if they reformed."

GNR last played the event in 2010 and were booed by the crowd after arriving onstage more than an hour late due to Axl Rose’s insistence on being rude to the band’s fans; Rose told That Metal Show host Eddie Trunk last fall some strange excuse that his lateness was due to events that happened 20 years ago, while Trunk missed the opportunity to challenge him on it by asking any meaningful follow up questions.

Adding to the 2010 UK festival debacle was Axl saying that the band were "declaring war" on the festival's promoters after their set was also cut short in Leeds – completely ignoring his role in things (cause and effect) and the fact that if Rose showed up on time, they would have finished on time.

Benn, who had previously said that he would definitely book the band again, told NME that he would not consider booking the 'Chinese Democracy' rockers again in their current state.

The original Guns N’ Roses lineup is expected to be in attendance for their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland on April 14; there’s still no official word on whether or not they’ll perform…although the folks at Envision Radio Networks possibly let the rock n’ roll cat of the bag recently by posting news that GNR will not play, while using music director Paul Shaffer’s twitter account.
