Tom Petty reveals new album details

Tom Petty will release a new album, “Hypnotic Eye”, this summer.

“I knew I wanted to do a rock ‘n’ roll record,” Petty reveals in a new interview with Rolling Stone. “We hadn’t made a straight, hard-rocking record, from beginning to end, in a long time.”

Petty’s first album with The Heartbreakers in four years (since 2010’s “Mojo”) signals a return to the sound and feel of his first two records, 1976’s self-titled debut and 1978’s “You’re Gonna Get It!”

“That’s what [long-time guitarist] Mike [Campbell] said: ‘You sing like you did on the first two albums,’” explained Petty. “Maybe this album does sound like that. But it’s that band 30 years later.”

Writing material for the 11-track record, co-produced by Petty, Campbell and Ryan Ulyate, took place periodically over the past three years. “You must get the songs,” says Tom. “It takes to write 10 or 11 really good songs.”

Petty says he will tour this year in support of the project.
