Tom Petty streams rare unreleased tracks from expanded Mojo reissue

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are streaming a pair of rare, unreleased tracks as part of the newly-available expanded edition of the 2010 blues album, “Mojo.”

Fans can now check out the band’s cover of the Sonny Boy Williamson II cover, “Help Me”, and an accompanying video unveiling newly-discovered footage of the group performing the song at their Los Angeles rehearsal space The Clubhouse, and audio of a second unreleased track from the sessions, “Mystery of Love.”

Arriving in sync with Petty’s October 20 birthday, the “Mojo: Extra Mojo Version” of the project includes the rare outtakes as exclusively featured on the streaming version of the set, which is also available in Dolby Atmos.

Launched with the lead single “Good Enough”, “Mojo” debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard Top Rock Albums chart and at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200; the band’s twelfth studio album showcased their melodic range – from Rock ‘n’ Roll, to Country, to electric and acoustic Blues, to classic moody ballads.

“With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band,” said Petty back in the day. “'Mojo' is where the band lives when it’s playing for itself.”

The standard edition of “Mojo” is also now available in a limited-edition translucent ruby red double vinyl LP pressing in the Tom Petty Store and select indie record stores, as well as in immersive Dolby Atmos and Spatial formats.

Petty passed away on October 2, 2017 at the age of 66 in a Santa Monica, CA hospital after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers are streaming a video for the live acoustic version of their 1976 classic, “American Girl”, from the newly-released album, “Live at the Fillmore 1997.”

The black and white video from co-directors Adria Petty and Jacques Naudé features audio of the performance as the soundtrack to the clip, which sees lead dancer and choreographer Maya Taylor with dancers Anna Iosipiv, Akane Little and Laura Aronoff as the camera moves through city streets, inside empty warehouses and atop buildings, exploring the lives of diverse characters.

Eddie Vedder and Stevie Nicks lead Tom Petty tributes at Ohana Festival

Eddie Vedder and Stevie Nicks were among the artists that performed Tom Petty songs at the Pearl Jam rocker’s Ohana Festival this past weekend in sync with the 5th anniversary of the passing of the Florida singer.

Petty passed away on October 2, 2017 at the age of 66 in a Santa Monica, CA hospital after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.

During her September 30 opening night headline set, Nicks shared the story of how Petty had written “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” before recording it as a duet with her for inclusion on her 1981 solo debut, “Bella Donna”, where it went on to become the project’s lead single and a US Top 5 hit.

As Nicks and her band kicked into the song, Vedder arrived on stage to deliver Petty’s vocal parts to the delight of the crowd.

The next day, Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs played three Petty songs during their set, including “Fault Lines”, “Even The Losers” and “Runnin Down A Dream.”

When Vedder took the stage for his October 1 headline set, he and his band The Earthlings were joined by Campbell for Petty’s “Room At The Top” before the singer recounted how happy he was to have performed with Nicks’ the night before, and then he shared his thoughts on Petty, telling the crowd: “Tomorrow would be five years since we all lost this guy that was a part of our lives; we all lost Tom, and I think about him all the time, as we all do. But I just keep reminding ourselves how grateful we can be because we still have his voice in our head and the songs are in us, and we can play them loud and we can still hear him.

“And tonight, we’re just so fortunate because we also have legendary Heartbreaker Mr. Mike Campbell on the guitar with us tonight. Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs played on this stage today … we got to hear a little Tom already …it's turning into Tomfest this weekend and I couldn’t be happier.”

Vedder, Campbell and the band then launched into Petty’s 1981 classic, “The Waiting.”

Fan filmed video of Petty tracks from each of three artist’s sets has surfaced online.

Eddie Vedder joined by Benmont Tench for Tom Petty classics in Los Angeles

Eddie Vedder was joined by Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench for a pair of Tom Petty classics during his February 25 show at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles, CA.

On the road in support of his new album, “Earthling”, the Pearl Jam rocker welcomed Tench to the stage – according to setlist.fm – for a version of Petty’s 1996 “Echo” track, “Room At The Top”, and later, the 1981 smash, “The Waiting.”

The keyboardist was also on board for “Long Way” – the 2022 album’s lead single which features Tench, as well as Pearl Jam’s “Better Man”, and covers of Marvin Gaye’s “Baby Don’t You Do It” and George Harrison’s “Isn’t It A Pity.”

The Los Angeles event was one of two shows that Vedder rescheduled about 10 days after their original dates due to a COVID-19 outbreak in his touring party; the month-long series wrapped up in San Diego, CA on February 27.

“Earthling” recently debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Current Albums Sales, Album Sales and Rock Albums charts.

Tom Petty honored with music degree from University Of Florida

Tom Petty has been honored with a posthumous doctoral degree in music from the University of Florida.

According to TampaBay.com, the trustees at the school voted unanimously at a December 3 board meeting to recognize the Petty’s enduring legacy.

University provost Joseph Glover read a motion to award Thomas Earl Petty, the Gainesville-born rock icon who died in 2017, a posthumous doctoral degree in music.

“(He’s) widely considered among the most distinctive and influential musicians over the past 50 years,” said Glover. “His presence remains significant as seen by abundant radio airplay and the popularity of events such as the Tom Petty birthday bash held in Gainesville. On the UF campus, Petty’s famous ‘I Won’t Back Down’ has become a mantra at athletic events.”

“This honor was a dream of Tom’s,” shared his social media team. “Congratulations Dr. Tom Petty.”

The singer – who was never enrolled at the school but did work as a groundskeeper there in his early years – previously received a Distinguished Achievement Award in 2006 from the university.

Fans of the school’s Florida Gators football team paid tribute to Petty by singing along to his 1989 classic, “I Won’t Back Down”, the weekend following his passing.

Tom Petty’s team are streaming a documentary about the making of his 1994 album, “Wildflowers.”

Directed by Mary Wharton and now available in 4K resolution as part of the YouTube Originals series, “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free: The Making of Wildflowers” offers an intimate look into the making of the rocker’s second solo effort through the period of 1993-1995 as he worked with producer Rick Rubin for the first time.

The film presents archival footage of Petty and his band in the recording studio, behind-the-scenes on tour, and at home with his family, and includes never-before-seen video from a newly discovered archive of 16mm film, as well as new interviews with "Wildflowers" co-producer and Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell along with Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, and many more.

Tom Petty premieres Angel Dream No. 2 video

Tom Petty’s team are premiering an animated video for “Angel Dream (No. 2)”, the title track to the newly-available “reimagined” 25th anniversary edition of his soundtrack album, “Songs And Music From The Motion Picture “She’s The One.”

“In celebration of ‘Angel Dream’ being the #1 Current Rock Album, we are excited to share the new original music video for the title track,” says Petty’s team. “Directed and animated by award-winning Gabriel Tick and featuring archival footage shot by Martyn Atkins.”

Retitled “Angel Dream (Songs and Music from the Motion Picture ‘She’s The One’)”, the original version served as the soundtrack to the 1996 romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz.

The set includes 4 previously unreleased tracks – “One Of Life’s Little Mysteries” (written by Tom), “Thirteen Days” (JJ Cale cover), “105 Degrees” (another Tom original), and “French Disconnection” (an instrumental in the same vein as the instrumentals on the original album), while an extended version of “Supernatural Radio” is also included.

Petty passed away in October of 2017 at the age of 66 in a Santa Monica, CA hospital after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.

Tom Petty streams previously unreleased She’s The One track 105 Degrees

Tom Petty’s team are streaming a lyric video for the previously-unreleased track, “105 Degrees”, from the newly-available “reimagined” 25th anniversary edition of his 1996 soundtrack album, “Songs And Music From The Motion Picture “She’s The One.”

The tune is one of four previously-unheard songs – alongside “One Of Life’s Little Mysteries” (written by Tom), “Thirteen Days” (JJ Cale cover) and the instrumental “French Disconnection” – featured on the package, which has been remixed and remastered and designed as a Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers album rather than a film soundtrack.

Retitled “Angel Dream (Songs and Music from the Motion Picture ‘She’s The One’)”, the original version served as the soundtrack to the 1996 romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz.

"These songs are extremely special," said Dana Petty in a statement. "I am grateful this record is getting the recognition it deserves. The remix Ryan Ulyate did sounds amazing, and the unreleased gems are a lovely bonus. Annakim, Adria, and I took a lot of time finding artwork that reflects the mood of the album. I think we finally achieved that with Alia Penner's work. It is surreal and beautiful, just like life during that time."

Tom Petty to release reimagined She’s The One collection

Tom Petty’s team will release a “reimagined” 25th anniversary edition of his 1996 soundtrack album, “Songs And Music From The Motion Picture “She’s The One”, on July 2.

Directed by Edward Burns, the romantic comedy starred Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz, with music by Petty and The Heartbreakers.

Retitled “Angel Dream (Songs and Music from the Motion Picture ‘She’s The One’),” the remixed and remastered project presents a song selection designed as a Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers album, rather than a film soundtrack.

The set will include 4 previously unreleased tracks – “One Of Life’s Little Mysteries” (written by Tom), “Thirteen Days” (JJ Cale cover), “105 Degrees” (another Tom original), and “French Disconnection” (an instrumental in the same vein as the instrumentals on the original album), while an extended version of “Supernatural Radio” will also be included.

On the making of the original album, Tom reflected, “It seemed like we approached the whole thing with a very spontaneous mood. I like things that way, I don’t—I don’t like to over-plan too much. It was terrific fun, we had a great time doing it.”

The reissue will be released on limited-edition cobalt blue vinyl for Record Store Day on Saturday, June 12, with the CD, digital and black vinyl editions available on July 2.

The project is being previewed with the track “Angel Dream No. 2.”

Petty passed away in October of 2017 at the age of 66 in a Santa Monica, CA hospital after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.
