Aerosmith members contribute songs for The SpongeBob Musical

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry are among the artists contributing songs for The SpongeBob Musical, which will open in Chicago next June.

Broadway World reports the project will feature tunes written by the Aerosmith duo as well as The Flaming Lips, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Panic! At the Disco, Dirty Projectors, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants and T.I., with an additional song by David Bowie and additional lyrics by Jonathan Coulton.

Co-conceived and directed by Tina Landau with music supervision by Tom Kitt, The SpongeBob Musical will begin performances at Broadway in Chicago's Oriental Theatre on June 7.

The debut limited engagement runs to July 3, following which the musical will open on Broadway in New York as part of the 2016-2017 season.

Since premiering on Nickelodeon in July 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has been the most-watched animated program with kids for more than 13 consecutive years. The most widely-distributed program in Viacom history, SpongeBob is seen in over 185 countries and translated in more than 50 languages.

Aerosmith are gearing up for the September 4 release of “Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014.”

The set features the Boston band’s headline performance on June 15, 2014 as they closed the final night of the Download Festival in Donington Park.
