Chris Cornell has released a cover of the 1966 Lorraine Ellison hit, “Stay With Me Baby”, as featured on the soundtrack to the 1970s HBO music seies Vinyl.
Ellison’s original reached No. 11 in the U.S. Billboard R&B chart and number 64 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart back in the day before being covered by several artists including Bette Midler, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Mary J. Blige, among others.
The Soundgarden frontman says his take is closer to a 1969 version by UK singer Terry Reid.
“I was very honored to be asked to record a version of 'Stay With Me Baby' for Vinyl,” Cornell tells Vulture. “I get to pay tribute to Terry Reid, whose version of the song has been a favorite of mine for many years, and be included on a great soundtrack with an amazing group of artists.”
Reid’s legacy includes an offer from Jimmy Page in 1968 to join the New Yardbirds – which went on to become Led Zeppelin. The singer was committed to opening dates on a US tour for Cream and suggested Page contact Robert Plant for the gig.
Due April 15, “Vinyl: Music From the HBO Series – The Essentials: Best of Season 1" presents a mix of covers, originals and unreleased tunes featured in the Mick Jagger/Martin Scorsese-produced series, which wraps up its initial run this Sunday, April 17.
The package includes music from Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello, Royal Blood, Humble Pie and others as featured on the program.
Cornell is currently playing shows across Europe in support of his latest album, “Higher Truth.”
The singer will return to North America for summer concerts starting in Clearwater, FL on June 16.
