Rock News Artist of The Year No. 9 – JOHN FOGERTY

John Fogerty began 2020 by announcing a series of spring US East Coast concerts and a fall residency at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas that would mark the final dates of the rocker’s extensive “My 50 Year Trip” tour, which he launched last year while marking the anniversary of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s milestone performance at Woodstock.

When the coronavirus pandemic began flaring up in February, the live music industry – like most others – began the start of a shutdown for a then-undetermined period of time.

In late March, Fogerty delivered a series of CCR classics from his California home during an episode of Rolling Stone’s new video series, “In My Room.”

“These are certainly different times that we’re living through,” said Fogerty at the time. “Wash your hands … stay safe, everybody. Nobody really knows how long this is going to last, but the better we do at taking the advice of medical people, the shorter it will be.”

The guitarist then began sharing home video performances of classic CCR tracks and his solo material and, by April, could be seen jamming alongside family members including sons Shane and Tyler and daughter Kelsy.

Following virtual appearances on NPR’s Tiny Desk concert and The Late Show with Steghen Colbert, Fogerty and family continued to share home video footage of classic hits and fan favorites including “Green River”, “Up Around The Bend” and “City Of New Orleans” before the lineup celebrated his 75th birthday in May with a performance of “Centerfield” at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Fogerty delivered the CCR classic, “Proud Mary”, on the July 4 PBS broadcast of “A Capital Fourth” before sharing more home video performances during the summer.

CCR marked the 50th anniversary of their fifth album, “Cosmo’s Factory”, with a vinyl reissue in August before the guitarist canceled his fall residency appearances.

As a tribute to his 2020 work and the CCR album anniversary, the rocker and his family issued a compilation of their performances, “Fogerty’s Factory”, in November – complete with an updated replica of the original 1970 “Cosmo’s Factory” cover art.

“We have had so much fun creating these videos,” explained Fogerty recently. “We hope we could bring some joy into your home from ours. These videos were a labor of love, only produced with a few folks with social distancing and masks included! We were able to create these videos without a big production or overdubs straight from our own home.”

Fogerty’s US east coast shows have been rescheduled to April of 2021 while others remain postponed and awaiting confirmation of further plans.
