Soundgarden: Chris Cornell to perform on Late Show with David Letterman

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell will perform on CBS-TV's The Late Show With David Letterman on Monday, December 16.

Cornell will play his song “Misery Chain”, which appears on “Music From And Inspired By 12 Years A Slave”, the soundtrack to the new pre-Civil War film based on the true story of Solomon Northrup.

Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life.

“I was moved by this film and the story in a way that transcends any film experience I have ever had,” says Cornell. “I was inspired to write a hundred different songs, but finally landed on one based on what I believe is an extremely important message I took from this man’s journey. Compassion, basic human rights and love must be our priorities above race, religion or commerce. Every generation needs a reminder of that simple idea.”

Last week, Cornell announced the cancellation of the final two dates of his current solo tour due to a recent shoulder injury.

“It is with regret that the upcoming December 5th Chris Cornell concert at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, Florida and the December 6th concert at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, Florida will be cancelled,” Cornell’s team said in a statement posted on his social media sites. “After Chris was forced to cancel the November 27th show in Delaware to rest his shoulder for 2 days, he returned to the tour in Atlanta at Center Stage last night. This morning, the doctor has advised complete rest as the injury has worsened.”

Cornell has been on the road across North America since October 15 performing extensive and intimate acoustic shows under his “Songbook” format , with Chris performing tracks from throughout his career – including the debut of acoustic arrangements of songs from 2012's “King Animal”, Soundgarden's first new studio album in over 16 years.
