Led Zeppelin bassist to join Seasick Steve at Bonnaroo

Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones will join Seasick Steve at Bonnaroo this June.

Jones played on Steve’s 2011 album, “You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks”, and appeared on 2013’s “Hubcap Music.”

Jones has appeared live with Seasick Steve several times in recent years, usually at large music festival events.

The annual Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival happens June 12 – 15 at Great Stage Park on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee.

The 2014 lineup includes dozens of acts, including Elton John, Jack White, Arctic Monkeys and Vampire Weekend, among others.

Another UK festival appearance by bluesman Seasick Steve has brought former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones out to play.

Jones joined Steve at the Reading Festival Saturday, the third UK festival show this summer where the two have performed together.

JPJ jammed with Steve at the Isle Of Wight in June, and last month, the bassist played with him at the iTunes Festival in London, along with Dead Weather bandmates Jack White and Alison Mosshart.

Jones played on Steve’s new album, “You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks,” which is being distributed by Whites’ Third Man Records in the US; elsewhere, Steve is signed to UK record label Play It Again Sam.

The Reading and Leeds Festivals are both on this weekend; the 3-day fests started Friday.

Seasick Steve was making the rounds in the UK this past weekend.

After playing a set at the iTunes Festival in London on Saturday – where he was joined by Dead Weather bandmates Jack White and Alison Mosshart, along with former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones - Steve joined the Foo Fighters for their second show in Milton Keynes on Sunday.

Jones was also along for the Foo jam on “Back In The Doghouse,” from Steve’s new album, “You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks.”

“I thought, you know what,” said head Foo Dave Grohl, “tonight, because he’s a badass, and because you guys are the coolest crowd we’ve had in a really long f**king time….we should have a jam. Ladies and gentlemen, would you please welcome my dear friend Seasick Steve to the stage.”

“Would you also please welcome,” continued Grohl, “the guy that made me wanna f**king play rock and roll…Mr. John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin.”

“And if you don’t mind, I’d like to play drums with these guys tonight.”

VIDEO: John Paul Jones joins Seasick Steve at Isle Of Wight

This is getting to be a habit, and a good one.

Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones joined Seasick Steve on stage Saturday at the Isle Of Wight Festival.

Jones played on Steve’s new album, “You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks,” and joined him for a couple of songs last month on Later With Jools Holland.

At the Isle Of Wight, Jones sat in for “Thunderbird,” while his Them Crooked Vultures bandmate (and head Foo Fighter) Dave Grohl could be seen bopping his head to the tune side stage.

In a new interview with The Arts Desk, Steve was asked about his collaboration with Jones and if he’d ever seen the mighty Zeppelin live.

“I saw them play in 1969,”
said the bluesman. “I was playing at a pizza parlour and this guy came in and asked if I wanted to see an English blues band. We went over to this amphitheatre and saw them play. Man, they was good. I didn't think of them like a blues band but I thought I ain't ever seen [imitates Robert Plant swinging microphone by its lead]... and the hair, plus they was so much better than everybody else. I'll never forget that show. I went backstage and saw that Robert Plant was smoking English cigarettes. I'd never seen an English cigarette before in my life so I bummed one off him. That was my big claim. I now know Robert Plant quite well and I told him but he don't remember. It tasted like s**t. I was smoking Lucky Strikes at the time and that cigarette tasted poor, poor, poor. I felt sorry for him - "Man, you call that a cigarette?"

More than 40 yars later, Steve is playing with the Zeppelin bassist; no word on whether or not he’s still bumming smokes.

Steve plays the GoldCoast Oceanfest in the UK this coming weekend.

Seasick Steve was tearing it up again on Later with Jools Holland, only this time he had some extra help: John Paul Jones sat in on bass.

Steve was joined by the Led Zeppelin legend for a couple of tunes on this week’s BBC show while out promoting the May 30 release of his new album, “You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks.”

Steve’s signed to UK record label Play It Again Sam, who release his albums everywhere except in the US, where they are distributed by Jack White’s Third Man Records; White brought Steve to SXSW in Austin earlier this year.

On May 26, Steve is set to play the Streets Of London Concert For Homelessness benefit gig at the Electric Ballroom in London.
