Gregg Allman documentary roadshow screenings announced

“Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul”, the highly acclaimed full-length feature documentary exploring the life and work of the late, great Gregg Allman, is set for over 40 one-night-only screenings in diverse venues across the United States, offering fans a unique opportunity to see the film on a big screen with a maximum fidelity sound system.

The roadshow presentations will begin on September 1 in venues ranging in size from the 70-capacity Capricorn Sound Studios in Macon, GA, to the 4,500-capacity Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA.

The idea for the roadshow screenings came to fruition when lead film producer Michael Lehman told Northstar Artists agency owner Kevin Daly that he wanted this film to be seen by as many people as possible to honor his longtime friend and client, Gregg Allman. With that in mind, Lehman and Daly decided to offer the film to Performing Arts Centers, Rock Clubs, Casinos, outdoor venues, and Theaters of all sizes. They concluded that, due to the nature of the film, Allman Brothers Band fans and lovers of music will want to see this film on the big screen with a professional PA system in venues that, in many cases, had presented live performances from Allman, Dickey Betts, Jaimoe, or the Allman Brothers Band themselves.

They also decided to create opportunities for presenters to add film intros and post-show Q&A's with Director James Keach and/or Lead Producer Michael Lehman, and/or appropriate musical guests among other ideas. With that in mind, Q&A sessions with Lehman are confirmed for several screenings, including in Aspen, CO; Tarrytown, NY; South Orange, NJ; and Mohegan Sun. James Keach will speak at the screening in San Francisco at the Presidio Theatre and both Lehman and Keach are slated to speak at the screening in Austin, TX at the ACL Live at the Moody Theater on October 20, 2026.

Additional screenings will be announced monthly and take place worldwide until December 8, 2027 (Allman's 80th Birthday). $2 from tickets sold for all screenings of "Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul" will benefit the Gregg Allman Scholarship Funds or a local charitable organization dedicated to supporting live music.

A trailer has surfaced ahead of the theatrical release of the full-length feature documentary “Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul.”

Produced by Subtext, in association with Rolling Stone Films, the film - directed by Grammy and Golden Globe Award-winning filmmaker James Keach – explores the life and work of Gregg Allman, one of the most distinctive voices in American music and, as co-founder and frontman of the Allman Brothers Band, a groundbreaking architect of Southern rock.

The project traces Gregg's journey from a childhood scarred by his father's murder to the heart of a generation-defining sound with the Allman Brothers Band; the film uses electrifying performances and archival recordings to reveal how his music, his headline-making marriage to Cher, and his restless pursuit of authenticity affirmed him not just as a rock legend, but as a lasting cultural force.

Told through archival recordings, candid interviews, and electric live performances, the film weaves an intimate portrait of Allman, honestly reflecting on the death of his brother and bandmate Duane, his battles with addiction, and the personal demons that shaped both his life and his blues-driven music. The documentary is anchored by rarely seen concert footage that captures the Allman Brothers Band at their creative peak, offering audiences an immersive, front-row view of one of rock 'n' roll's most powerful live outfits.

“Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul” will see its theatrical release on Wednesday, June 17, including one-week engagements in Los Angeles and New York as well as one-night exclusive screenings across the country.

Two premiere events will take place ahead of the film's arrival; the first, on June 9 at New York City's Gramercy Theatre, will feature a special acoustic performance by Devon Allman and Duane Betts – while the second will be held on June 11 at the Grand Opera House in Macon, GA, and will include a special appearance by Chuck Leavell. Subtext, in association with Rolling Stone Films, proudly announces the highly anticipated domestic theatrical release of “Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul” on Wednesday, June 17, including one-week engagements in Los Angeles and New York as well as one-night exclusive screenings across the country.

Beyond the music, the project explores what Gregg Allman and the Allman Brothers Band came to represent in American culture - an ethos rooted in artistic freedom, collaboration, and defiance of convention. It highlights how Gregg and the band rejected the racial divisions that defined much of the American South, grounding their sound in deep respect for Black musical traditions and collaboration with Black musicians at a time when integrated rock groups were rare. The documentary also examines Allman's complicated relationship with fame, including his highly publicized marriage to Cher, and how life in the public eye collided with his restless pursuit of authenticity.

“Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul” marks the inaugural release from Subtext, the U.S. independent film production and distribution company started in January 2026 by industry veterans Danielle DiGiacomo, Brian Levy, and Teddy Liouliakis with a focus on author-driven, distinctive cinema. The film represents the launch of Subtext's broader vision to build a curated slate of music-driven films, combining storytelling, distribution, and cultural partnerships to maximize both reach and revenue.

Keach, whose previous credits include 2005's Academy Award-winning Walk The Line and such acclaimed documentaries as 2014's Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me, 2019's David Crosby: Remember My Name, and the Grammy Award-winning Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, directed and produced “Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul” alongside producer and longtime Gregg Allman manager Michael Lehman and Alex Komisaruk of PCH Films, as well as Emmy-, Golden Globe-, and Grammy Award-winning executive producers Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank (Music by John Williams, Faye, Laurel Canyon) of Amblin Documentaries, Douglas Banker of Five All in the Fifth, Michael Hughes and Greg C. "Gregg's story totally resonated with me," says Keach, "especially his relationship with his brother, Duane. I have a very close relationship with my brother, Stacy. We worked together for years on a lot of great projects - The Long Riders was formative for us as well as for the Carradine and Quaid brothers - and the thought of losing my brother at such a young age really got me.

"Not everyone works this way, but I believe that understanding trauma from the formative years of a person's life is central when telling their story in a documentary. A lot of incredible artists have these shattering experiences in their past that inform every aspect of their lives and talent. Gregg had those demons inside his amazingly creative brain. He dove deep into his addiction when Duane died, but later in life, when he was sober, he faced his own mortality with dignity and acceptance. It's personally important to me to carry Gregg's message of trying to change the trajectory of people consumed by addiction. You can hear the ache in his voice in his brilliant music."

"I was Gregg's friend," says Lehman. "This movie is personal to me because I want the world to know the Gregg behind the music. Gregg was impacted by, among other things, his profoundly close relationship and the tragic loss of his brother Duane. His music reflects the joy and the pain of his life experiences. I chose James Keach to direct this film because James is both an incredibly talented director and has a close relationship with his own brother, Stacy. I knew from the start that he would bring to life Gregg's story, including the relationship with Duane and with his band, The Allman Brothers Band, and that James would be able to create both an enjoyable and deeply memorable film."

Allman Brothers Band 50th anniversary tribute concert gets home release

A 50th anniversary tribute concert featuring the surviving members of The Allman Brothers Band will see its home release on July 23.

Billed as “The Brothers”, the lineup of drummer Jaimoe Johanson, guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, bassist Oteil Burbridge and percussionist Marc Quinones were joined at Madison Square Garden for the one-time event by Duane Trucks and Reese Wynans, and special guest Chuck Leavell.

“The Brothers/March 10, 2020/Madison Square Garden/New York, NY” took place just two days before the live music industry was effectively shut down as the coronavirus pandemic began to spread across the US.

The 2020 tribute came 50 years after the group formed in Jacksonville, FL in the spring of 1969, and six years since they performed their final show at New York’s Beacon Theatre on October 28, 2014.

According to Rolling Stone, the live package will be available in multiple formats, including 4CD, 3DVD, or 2Blu-Rays sets, and the video will also be streamed on Nugs and Amazon Prime’s streaming service Coda.

The group are sharing video of a live version of “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’” from the forthcoming collection.

Allman Brothers Band stream Live At Great Woods 1991 reissue

The Allman Brothers Band are streaming their newly-reissued concert video, “Live At Great Woods September 6, 1991.”

Filmed for a Japanese TV special 9/6/1991 and issued on VHS and LaserDisc in 1992, the original 2014 DVD release incorporated interview segments into the songs, but this remastered version – with the rights recently being returned to the group – delivers the performance in full.

At the time, the band was touring in support of their newly-released “Shades Of Two Worlds” album, and the outdoor show featured the lineup of founding members Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jaimoe and Butch Trucks plus Warren Haynes, Allen Woody and Marc Quinones.

“Live At Great Woods” is now available on DVD and digitally, with individual audio and video tracks available digitally.

The set is being reissued in sync with the Allman Brothers Band’s 52nd anniversary, following their formation in Jacksonville, FL in March of 1969 before relocating to Macon, GA.

The iconic group performed their final show at New York’s Beacon Theatre on October 28, 2014.

In the years following the farewell concert, a pair of original members have died: drummer Butch Trucks committed suicide in January of 2017 while singer and keyboardist Gregg Allman passed away from liver cancer four months later.

Allman Brothers Band to release Down In Texas ’71 live package

The Allman Brothers Band will release a new live package, “Down In Texas ‘71”, on March 26.

The project captures the group during a September 28, 1971 performance at the Austin Municipal Auditorium in Austin, TX, delivering classics like “Statesboro Blues,” “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and “Stormy Monday,” among others.

The “Down In Texas ’71” appearance came two months after the release of the band’s legendary live package, “At Fillmore East”, and took place one month before the death of Duane Allman following a motorcycle accident in Macon, GA.

The Austin show presents the original ABB line-up – Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe – at the peak of their creativity. An innovative “You Don’t Love Me” and the jazz-inspired “Hot ’Lanta” give hints of where the group may have taken their music if Duane had lived.

In addition, “Down In Texas ’71” features saxophonist Rudolph “Juicy” Carter sitting in on six out of the nine tracks, which is the most extensive guest appearance available with the band’s first incarnation. Juicy and Jaimoe had played together with Percy Sledge, and it was Juicy who coined the moniker Jaimoe for the drummer born as Johnny Lee Johnson.

As a bonus available only on the physical CD is an exclusive radio interview with band members Berry Oakley and Duane Allman, recorded just a few months ahead of Austin performance.

Proceeds from this exclusive release will benefit the Allman Brothers Band Museum; The Big House in Macon, GA is the three-story house where members of The Allman Brothers Band, their roadies, friends, and families lived between 1970-1973 and was the focal point of gathering in the group’s early years. The Big House is now home to the largest collection of ABB memorabilia in the world.

Allman Brothers Band to release final concert with Duane Allman

The Allman Brothers Band have announced plans for the fall release of a partial recording of guitarist Duane Allman’s final concert performance with the group, just days before his death in a 1971 motorcycle accident.

According to Relix, “The Final Note” presents 7 of 11 songs from an October 17, 1971 show at the Painters Mill Music Fair in Owings Mills, MD, as captured on a hand-held cassette machine by 18-year-old radio journalist Sam Idas.

“My only intention was to record the interview,” recalls Idas. “This was a brand-new cassette recorder with an internal microphone, and I had one 60-minute cassette tape. I was sitting there with the recorder in my lap, and I remember thinking ‘Why don’t I try this out? I can record the concert!’ It was a totally spontaneous decision.

“I’d been to many concerts, but this was the only time I had the thought – and the motivation – to record the show.”

The cassette went forgotten by Idas until a few years ago, when his old roommate asked him if he still had it; the tape’s audio quality has been upgraded with current recording techniques.

Due October 16, “The Final Note” features seven tracks, including “Statesboro Blues”, “Trouble No More”, “Hot ‘Lanta” and “Whipping Post.”

The package will feature never-before-published photos from the Maryland show alongside liner notes from band archivist John Lynskey and an image of the actual cassette Idas used to tape part of the concert.

Duane was born in Nashville, TN in 1946; after playing in a number of groups to various degrees of success, the guitarist and his younger brother, Gregg, formed the Allman Brothers Band in Jacksonville, FL during a series of jams with guitarist Dickey Betts, bassist Berry Oakley, and drummers Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson.

The group issued their self-titled debut album in 1969, a set that featured classics like “Whipping Post” and “Dreams.”

Duane died as a result of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in Macon, GA on October 29, 1971 at the age of 24; Gregg passed away from liver cancer in 2017 at the age of 69.

The surviving members of The Allman Brothers Band reunited for a 50th anniversary concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden on March 10, and video from the event is streaming online.

Billed as “The Brothers”, the lineup of drummer Jaimoe Johanson, guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, bassist Oteil Burbridge and percussionist Marc Quinones were joined at the one-time event by Duane Trucks and Reese Wynans, and special guest Chuck Leavell.

The group started the evening with the first two songs on the Allman Brothers' 1969 debut, "Don't Want You No More" and "It's Not My Cross To Bear," and stayed focused on the classic material from the band's first four albums for much of the night, according to Billboard.

Noted expert Alan Paul – author of “One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band” – detailed the highlights of the two-set, four-hour performance, which wrapped up with Jaimoe taking to the microphone to say a few words of thanks before the lineup closed out the reunion with "Midnight Rider" and "Whipping Post."

The 2020 tribute comes 50 years after the group formed in Jacksonville, FL in the spring of 1969, and six years since they performed their final show at New York’s Beacon Theatre on October 28, 2014.

In the years following the farewell concert, a pair of original Allman Brothers members have died: drummer Butch Trucks committed suicide in January of 2017 while singer and keyboardist Gregg Allman passed away from liver cancer four months later.

The Allman Brothers Band recently released “Trouble No More: The Complete 50th Anniversary Collection”; the package delivers 61 classics from the Jacksonville, FL outfit, including a mix of live performances, rarities and seven previously-unreleased tracks.

Allman Brothers Band announce 50th anniversary collection

The Allman Brothers Band will release a massive box set to mark their 50th anniversary.

Due February 28, “Trouble No More: The Complete 50th Anniversary Collection” delivers 61 classics from the Jacksonville, FL outfit, including a mix of live performances and rarities – including seven previously-unreleased tracks.

Available in multiple configurations, including as a 10LP deluxe vinyl box set, 5 CD package and digitally, the compilation is named after – and being previewed by – a previously-unavailable 1969 demo of “Trouble No More”, and bookended with a live performance of the song from the Allman Brothers Band’s final show at New York’s Beacon Theatre in the fall of 2014.

Arranged chronologically and thematically and representing all 13 lineups the band had, “Trouble No More: The Complete 50th Anniversary Collection” is grouped into five distinct eras representing the various stages of the band’s recording and performance history, divided by the group's stints on the Capricorn, Arista and Epic labels, as well as the band's own Peach imprint.

The deluxe vinyl box presents 10 LPs packaged in five gatefold jackets housed in a wood veneer-wrapped slipcase with gold graphics, accompanied by a 56-page book. The vinyl set will also be released as a limited edition color vinyl collection via the online music retailer uDiscover with each LP pressed on orange and red splatter colored vinyl evoking the insides of a peach.

The 5CD edition will be packaged in a 12-panel softpack with a visually distinctive slipcase and includes an 88-page booklet.

Both physical editions feature an insightful nearly 9000 word essay on the 50-year history of the band by John Lynskey, unreleased band photos along with newly shot photos of memorabilia from the Big House Museum in the band’s adopted hometown Macon, GA and a recap of the 13 incarnations of the band lineup.

The digital version of the album will mirror the 5CD edition and be available for streaming and download, including Apple Digital Master.

"Hard to believe it’s been five years since our final show at the Beacon,” says Haynes. “We had all talked about doing a final show at Madison Square Garden which never came to fruition. What a great way to honor 50 years of music and fulfill that wish at the same time.”

Presales for the Madison Square Garden concert will begin on Tuesday, January 7, with general public tickets going on sale Friday, January 10.

Duane Allman guitar from Eric Clapton Layla sessions sells for $1 million at auction

A 1957 gold-topped Les Paul guitar famously played by Duane Allman on Eric Clapton’s 1970 classic, “Layla”, was sold in a recent auction for a record-breaking $1.25 million.

According to the The Macon Telegraph, the instrument had been on display at the Allman Brothers Band’s museum, The Big House, in Macon until last week.

“It was the first time that a refinished guitar sold for that much money,” says Richard Brent, director of The Big House. “I don’t think anybody expected that. ... The history of it is what sold it.”

Prior to guesting with Clapton on the classic track from Derek and the Dominos' “Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs” collection, Duane played the guitar on the first two Allman Brothers records – 1969’s self-titled debut and 1970’s “Idlewild South” – and on “Loan Me A Dime” with Boz Scaggs.

Brent explains that the man who bought the guitar at the auction is a collector from out of town who wants to remain anonymous, but has agreed to share it with the museum every other six months.

“It will be coming back to The Big House in late November,” adds Brent. “We couldn’t ask for more than that.”

Duane Allman died as a result of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in Macon, GA in October of 1971 at the age of 24.

Allman Brothers Band to release Fillmore West '71 package

The Allman Brothers Band have announced plans to release an archival live package, “Fillmore West '71” – documenting the band’s three-show series at the famed San Francisco, CA venue – as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations.

Due August 16, the 4CD set presents material captured in concert in late January of 1971, just two months ahead of the group’s recording of the legendary live album, “At Fillmore East”, at the chain’s New York location.

Compiled from reel-to-reel soundboard masters, the project sees the lineup of Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jaimoe, Berry Oakley and Butch Trucks deliver tracks from their self-titled 1969 debut and 1970’s “Idlewild South”, as well as the new instrumental "Hot 'Lanta"; the set also adds a March, 1970 version of "Mountain Jam" from the Warehouse in New Orleans, LA that clocks in at 45 minutes long.

Kirk West – who served as the "Tour Mystic" and official archivist for the Allman Brothers Band for over 20 years – played a pivotal role in re-acquiring the original live performance two-track, reel-to-reel tapes used for this release from legendary band crew members Twiggs Lyndon, Joe Dan Petty and Mike Callahan, who were the original care takers of these recordings.

The tapes had been stored in closets and attics for many years, necessitating careful transfers and several successive attempts at restoration, as technology continued to improve.

Long before his association with the group, West was on hand for the Fillmore West shows.

"I was living in Palo Alto with a bunch of hippie kids who, by and large, were Dead Heads. I had moved to California from Chicago, and I already was a big Allman Brothers fan," recalls West. "I was insisting that everyone in the house go up to the Fillmore that weekend - 'Let's go, let's go - the Brothers are in town, playing with Hot effin' Tuna."

Dickey Betts recovering from brain surgery following accident

Former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts is recovering following brain surgery last Friday after injuring himself recently in an accident at his Sarasota, FL home.

“Dickey Betts and his family want everyone to know that his surgery was a success,” read a post by his manager David Spero on social media sites for both the Dickey Betts Band and The Allman Brothers Band. “The outpouring of support from all over the world has been overwhelming and amazing. We are so appreciative. Thank you all so much for your wonderful thoughts and prayers. We will keep you updated.”

Spero revealed last week that the guitarist was hospitalized after injuring himself while playing with his dog in the backyard when he slipped and hit his head, referring to the incident as a ”freak accident.”

The Allman Brothers shared the latest news on Betts via Facebook on Tuesday, writing: “An update from David Spero: Donna just texted me that Dickey is ‘Off the respirator and doing great! Talking, laughing and, of course, complaining!’ We thank you all for your love and prayers. He still has a ways to go.”

A cofounding member of the Allman Brothers Band, Betts wrote the group’s only US Top 10 hit with 1973’s “Ramblin’ Man”, while the 1973 instrumental, “Jessica”, won them a Grammy Award in 1996; he served several stints with the legendary southern rockers before leaving for good in 2000.

Betts, who had recently returned to live action this year, was forced to postpone a series of concerts last month after suffering what doctors referred to as a “mild stroke”; Spero confirmed that all scheduled fall dates would be cancelled following the injury as the musician deals with recovery in the months ahead.

Dickey Betts to undergo brain surgery following accident

Former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts will undergo brain surgery after injuring himself in an accident at his Sarasota, FL home, according to the Bradenton Herald.

“He had a fall at his house on Monday night and he’s at the hospital,” says manager David Spero. “They have him sedated. He’s listed as critical but stable.

“It really was just a freak accident,” he adds, explaining that the guitarist was playing with his dog in the backyard when he slipped and hit his head.

“As far as recovery, we don’t what is going to happen,” adds the manager, who confirmed that Betts is scheduled for surgery on Friday to ease the pressure on his brain. “Once that happens it will probably turn everything around.”

“Donna is by her husband's side with Dickey's children,” read a statement from the Dickey Betts Band social media sites.

“The family appreciates all of your thoughts and prayers during this very trying time,” says Donna. “Dickey is a notorious fighter and he is displaying that now!”

Last month, the former Allman Brothers Band rocker postponed a series of concerts after suffering what doctors are calling a “mild stroke.”

According to Spero, the fall was unrelated to the stroke.

Betts – who had aimed to return to the stage in November – had returned to live action this summer following a three-year touring hiatus.

“Now, though, Betts' family, friends and band mates are focusing their attention on Betts regaining his health; with the upcoming November shows obviously being cancelled,” added the group.

"It was just a few days ago that Dickey was telling me how excited he was to get back in front of the fans on November 1," said Spero. "It is very unfortunate, for all involved, that we need to cancel those shows. Please add Dickey into your thoughts and prayers.”

“Please say a prayer for brother Dickey,” posted the Allman Brothers Band.

Former Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts postpones shows following stroke

Former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts has postponed a series of upcoming concerts after suffering what doctors are calling a “mild stroke.”

The rocker canceled the remainder of his summer tour – an August 28 date at Syracuse, New York’s Great New York State Fair, an August 30 gig in Wallingford, CT and an August 31 stop on Hampton Beach, NH – as he recovers.

Betts’ team revealed the news via social media, writing “yesterday, after describing to his physicians certain post-stroke repercussions, he was strongly advised to give himself more time to recuperate. Doctors have assured Betts that after three to five weeks he will be 100 percent recovered and can resume his touring schedule.”

“Dickey really regrets that he can’t be there for his fans,” says his manager David Spero, “but he has to take care of his health first.”

Betts is hoping to work with promoters to reschedule the dates in Connecticut and New Hampshire, with the goal of resuming his 2018 tour at the Bell Auditorium in Augusta, GA on November 1.

Joining Betts in the current lineup of his live band are his son Duane Betts on guitar, bassist Pedro Arevalo, drummers Frankie Lombardi and Steve Camilleri as well as guitarist Damon Fowler and keyboardist Mike Kach.

The lead single from the group’s third album, “Eat A Peach”, was written by Gregg Allman following the 1971 motorcycle accident death of his brother, guitarist Duane Allman.

“Peach Picks: Cream Of The Crop 2003” is dedicated to the memory of Gregg, who passed away in May 2017 from complications of liver cancer at the age of 69.

The 36-track, 4 disc set presents a collection of the best performances culled from six shows by the legendary group in July and August 2003, including material from events in Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Darien Center, NY, Hartford, Charlotte and Raleigh … with no song repeated.

“That was an important time in the growth of that incarnation of the ABB,” recalls guitarist and Supervising Producer Warren Haynes. “We had just released Hittin’ The Note and everybody was psyched to be playing a lot of new material from an album we all were very proud of and there was new life being breathed into a lot of the older songs.”

Originally recorded for the then-nascent “Instant Live” CD series, guest musicians on four “Cream Of The Crop 2003” songs include Susan Tedeschi, Karl Denson and Branford Marsalis.
