It was announced today that ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard died on August 17 at the age of 77 while in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, TX with family members at his side.
The Texas band’s drummer for the past 56 years, Beard – together with guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill – were one of music’s most enduring line-ups continuing until 2021 when Hill’s passing saw Elwood Francis join the band, who have continued to tour throughout North America, Europe and South America to this day.
“Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas,” said Gibbons. “His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top. The band of which he was part for six decades is going to keep on keeping on as he had wished.”
Frank Beard’s passing necessitates the cancellation of ZZ Top tour dates that had been scheduled for tonight in Salt Lake City and Wednesday’s show in Colorado Springs.
The band will resume its current The Big One! Tour this weekend with two dates in at Austin City Limits, one of Frank’s favorite venues and in a city that had been something of a second home for him.

A ZZ Top spokesperson confirmed to Billboard that Beard will not be completing the current leg of the tour and that drummer Michael Monahan will join Billy Gibbons and bassist Elwood Francis for the time being; the spokesperson said no additional information was available on Beard’s condition or the reason behind his absence.
According to Rolling Stone, Beard’s status initially led to the last-minute cancellation of the group’s Hollywood Bowl concert last week.
“Insurmountable obstacles require canceling our Hollywood Bowl performance,” shared Billy Gibbons in a statement posted to the band’s social media. “Friends, fans and followers of ZZ Top are the best in the business and the band is counting on everyone to bear with us for this brief interruption.”
Beard has dealt with issues in recent times, including stepping away from the band’s tour last year to deal with some health issues.
ZZ Top is currently playing dates on The Big One Tour, which includes three dozen US shows into October, after which they with perform in Mexico and South America in November.

ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons has released a new single, “Brown Paper Bag.”
The song features “my good buddy, Keith Urban, playing some good-ass guitar,” said Gibbons on social media.
No further details have been released about the track.
To date, Gibbons has issued three solo albums – including 2015’s “Perfectamundo”, 2018’s “The Big Bad Blues”, and 2021’s “Hardware” – all via Concord Records.
“Brown Paper Bag” arrives ahead of a summer tour across Europe by ZZ Top, which will open in Tartu, Estonia on June 22; the trio returns to the US for more shows in August.

ZZ Top have announced a 2026 US leg of “The Big One!” tour, taking place in addition to their recently-revealed joint “Dos Amigos Tour” with Dwight Yoakam.
Shows for the two US series will overlap between late March and the end of May, with events starting March 21st with ZZ Top’s appearance at the Outlaws & Legends Music Festival in Abilene, Texas.
“We’ve been spending a lot of time on the road and the more we’re out there, the more it feels like home," says Billy Gibbons. "Our philosophy is to keep on keeping on because, simply put, we’ve been having a good time and see no reason to stop. It’s great to connect with audiences that are now three generations deep. The party train continues to roll!”

ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons has announced dates for a 2026 solo tour.
The North American series will open January 20 in Napa, CA, with dates currently scheduled until end of February.
Joining Gibbons in the BFG Band is drummer Chris "Whipper" Layton and Mike "The Drifter" Flanigin on Hammond organ, bass and backing vocals.
“I’m joined with Whipper and The Drifter, in our collective Texas collective blues tradition," says Gibbons. "There’s a bond that speaks volumes about our sonic skew. One might hear a surf tune or some other detour of loudness as what we do is looser than our collective background might suggest. We predict good times as we always say, ‘Ya’ can’t lose with the blues.’”

ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard has rejoined the band’s Elevation Tour.
The rocker returned to the stage for a June 1 show in Victoria, BC after leaving the series in March to deal with foot and ankle issues which band management reveals have been resolved, and Beard is set to see the tour through to its completion in October.
“It’s good to be back,” says Beard. “See you out there.”
“We’re happy that Frank is back with (bassist) Elwood (Francis) and yours truly, BFG,” adds Billy Gibbons. “We missed him and are looking forward to turning it up and rocking out with him as has been the case for the last few hundred or so decades. His complete recovery is cause for celebration and that’s just what we intend to do on an open-ended basis. Welcome back, pardner!”
In Beard’s absence, ZZ Top enlisted longtime tech member, percussionist and drummer John Douglas to step in; Douglas has maintained a close relationship with Beard and the bandmates, having served with the group in the past (Douglas previously filled in when Frank underwent in an emergency appendectomy in Paris, back in 2002).
Support acts who will share the bill with ZZ Top on the tour dates include Night Ranger, Payton Smith, Black Stone Cherry, and The Wallflowers.

ZZ Top has extended its Elevation Tour with a series of new US concert dates.
The latest North American leg – which will begin June 1 in Victoria, BC – has added 21 dates to the trek, which is now scheduled to wrap up in early October.
The iconic Texas rockers will be joined along the way by various support acts including Night Ranger, Payton Smith and Black Stone Cherry.
“We love getting out there and turning it up so we're excited about these new dates because this tour’s been a great ride so far and we don’t want it to end anytime soon,” says Billy F Gibbons.

Beard, along with fellow ZZ Top members, Billy Gibbons and Elwood Francis, presently on the Elevation tour since March 5, have engaged fellow Texan, and longtime tech member, percussionist and drummer, John Douglas, for the interim.
Mr. Douglas has maintained a close relationship with Beard and the bandmates, having served with the group in the past (Douglas actually filled in when Frank underwent in an emergency appendectomy in Paris, back in 2002).
Beard is looking forward to a speedy recovery.”

ZZ Top icon Billy Gibbons has released a new single, “Livin’ It Up In Texas.”
Originally previewed earlier this month in an episode of the hit Paramount+ series Landman, the song – now available for streaming and download - was written by Gibbons with Landman stars Billy Bob Thornton (Tommy Norris) and Mark Collie (Sherriff Walt Joeberg).
Produced by the guitarist, the song arrives in sync with the start of a solo tour by Gibbons and his band The BFG that includes Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Chris “Whipper” Layton and Austin music stalwart Mike “The Drifter” Flanigin.
Gibbons and Thornton have been friends for many years; the actor had decades ago been a member of Tres Hombres, a ZZ Top tribute band for which he played drums. Billy Gibbons cited them as “The best little cover band in Texas.” Thornton co-founded The Boxmasters in 2007 and toured with them as recently as this past fall. Mark Collie, likewise, has pursued a career in music with numerous country chart recordings to his credit as well as his having written songs for Aaron Tippin, Alabama, Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw, among others. He’s also recorded with Thornton and The Boxmasters.
“It seemed really natural to team up with Billy Bob and Mark to write a song for Landman,” says Gibbons. “‘Livin’ It Up Down In Texas’ isn’t, per se, autobiographical, but does encapsulate the oil-stained Lone Star lifestyle as seen each week in the series.”
Gibbons and the band open the month-long trek with four shows at the Blue Note Hawaii in Honolulu, HI starting this weekend, and the guitarist will rejoin ZZ Top to resume dates on the band’s Elevation Tour.

ZZ Top has expanded its Elevation Tour with a series of spring US concert dates.
The trek follows a run of dates across Europe and the UK this past summer, which delivered the band's first shows on the continent in five years.
“We’re hitting the road again for the 2025 Elevation Tour!,” says ZZ Top.
The spring series will open March 5 in Dothan, AL, with dates wrapping up in Arkansas in mid-April.

The month-long series – which is set to open with four shows at the Blue Note Hawaii in Honolulu, HI in mid-January – will see Gibbons joined by BFGs featuring Mike Flanigin and Chris Layton.
The shows will the move to the US mainland for four nights at Blue Note Napa in Napa, CA before heading around the country and wrapping up in Bristol, TN on February 20.

ZZ Top has announced dates for a summer 2024 tour of Europe and the UK.
The Texas band's first shows on the continent in five years will consist of stops in nine countries, including festivals and indoor headline shows, starting in Sweden on June 28 before coming to Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, France and the U.K., and wrapping up in Switzerland on July 16.
"It's been a while since we've been able to check in with our European fans, so it goes without saying that we're excited about coming back this summer," says Billy Gibbons. "We're looking forward to a good time and that goes for both those in the audience and on stage."

ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd have announced 2024 dates for a co-headlining North American tour.
The iconic classic rock bands have expanded The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour – which launched this past summer and played into the early fall – with a new run starting next spring in Savannah, GA with shows scheduled into late September.
The trek is named after a pair of classic tracks by the groups: ZZ Top’s 1983 “Eliminator” hit, “Sharp Dressed Man”, and “Simple Man” from Skynyrd’s 1973 album debut, “Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd.”
An artist presale begins Tuesday, October 31 at 10AM local time, with general public tickets available Friday, November 3 10AM local time.

As Classic Rock reports, Dusty had made it clear that he wanted the band to continue without him.
“Yes he did,” confirms Gibbons, who is currently playing solo dates in Europe. “He said: ‘The show must go on.’ That was his wish, and we granted it.”
When asked about new music, the guitarist say he hopes to release a new album later this year.
“In fact, we are currently reviewing the tracks that deserve completion,” says Gibbons. “Dusty is on some of those, so is Elwood. What’s fascinating is that we have three or four tracks with them both, they’re trading off. The only tell-tale difference is that Dusty, playing with his fingers, sounds a little warmer.”
Gibbons and ZZ Top will team up with Lynyrd Skynyrd for a co-headlining North American tour next month; billed as "The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour", the summer 2023 series will open in West Palm Beach, FL on July 21, with shows wrapping up in mid-September.

An all-star cast performed a tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd at the CMT Music Awards in Austin, TX on April 2.
Organizers closed out the 2023 edition of the annual event with a two-song medley that saw Paul Rodgers and Cody Johnson trade lead vocals on “Simple Man” and “Sweet Home Alabama” alongside a lineup that included guitarists Slash, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, and Warren Haynes, longtime Rolling Stones pianist Chuck Leavell, a rhythm section of veteran Nashville studio and touring musicians Ethan Pilzer and Rich Redmond, and LeAnn Rimes and Wynonna Judd filling the role of "The Honkettes."
The music industry tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd comes just weeks after the passing of the group’s last original founding member Gary Rossington; no cause of death has been revealed.
“A night to remember…Gary Rossington and celebrate our brothers and sisters in Skynyrd,” shared Rodgers on social media. “It was wild!”
Rossington’s widow and band member Dale Krantz Rossington was joined by Skynyrd singer Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Rickey Medlocke at the event, which took place at Austin’s Moody Center and was hosted by Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown.
“It’s a great night celebrating Gary and the music of Skynyrd!,” posted the group.
Lynyrd Skynyrd will resume its 50th anniversary tour at the end of the month.

ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons has announced dates for a solo European tour.
The legendary rocker will be joined by his regular live lineup of drummer Matt Sorum and guitarist Austin Hanks for the series, which will mix headline dates with festival appearances when it opens at the Sweden Rock Festival on June 10.
Billed as "The Big One – Part 1" 2023 tour, the month-long run will see Gibbons and company play 20 shows in 12 countries by the time it wraps up in mid-July.
Tickets will go on sale this Friday, January 27 via the usual outlets.
Sorum and Hanks joined Gibbons on his third solo album, 2021’s “Hardware”; they recorded the set at Escape Studio in California’s high desert, near Palm Springs, and launched the project with the lead single, “West Coast Junkie.”
Gibbons will regroup with ZZ Top for shows in New Zealand next month ahead of a spring series of US dates.
