VIDEO: Dave Grohl fills in on drums for Cage The Elephant

Dave Grohl might as well wear a Superman shirt 24/7.

A rock n’ roll hero to many, the head Foo Fighter stepped it up a notch by becoming a real-life hero to show openers Cage The Elephant, in Salt Lake City Tuesday night.

The Salt Lake City Tribune reports CTE drummer Jared Champion was hospitalized for a burst appendix, just hours before the show.

Prior to the gig, the band alerted fans on Champion’s status, saying, “Don't worry everyone! Jared is doing fine, his appendix ruptured, but he'll be back with us in no time!!! Get to feeling better Jared!!!! We love you man!”

Touring behind their latest album, “Thank You Happy Birthday,” the Kentucky rockers found a substitute drummer and began their set in a “tentative” way, but it was Grohl to the rescue: the band and crowd got a spark when Dave surprisingly sat behind the drum kit and played the last five songs of their set.

““Ever have one of those moments that you feel like you’ll never forget for the rest of your life?,” CTE singer Matthew Shultz asked the crowd before the band launched into “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked.”

Grohl and the Foos then went out and rocked the Salt Lake City crowd with a show of their own.

After the concert, CTE posted their thoughts:

“Crazy Crazy day!!!!!! HUGE thanks to Dave Grohl for jammin the drums!! Having a great time on Foo Fighters tour!!! Get well soon Jared!”

A little rock n' roll double duty: all in a day’s work for the mighty Dave Grohl.
