Slash and more to launch Jimi Hendrix postage stamp with free SXSW concert

Slash, Wayne Kramer and The Doors' Robbie Krieger are among the guitarists who will be on hand to launch the new Jimi Hendrix US postage stamp with a free concert at SXSW on Thursday, March 13.

“A Jimi Hendrix Celebration” at Butler Park in Austin, Texas will feature the unveiling of the Hendrix stamp as part of the United States Postal Service’s US Music Icons series.

The image used on the stamp is a painting of Hendrix by Rudy Gutierrez, who created the artwork for the 2002 album, “Shaman”, by Santana; the Hendrix stamp is his first project for the Postal Service.

An evening showcase concert celebrating Hendrix is being curated by MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, and will feature Slash, Rusty Anderson (Paul McCartney), Dave & Phil Alvin, Robby Krieger (The Doors), and Perry & Etty Farrell.

The tribute will also feature Doug Pinnick (King's X), Mary Bridget Davies, and Jesse Malin; Los Lonely Boys and Vintage Trouble are the opening acts for the event.
