Neil Young records instant vinyl on The Tonight Show

Neil Young and Jack White were featured guests on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, and video of their appearance – which saw Young cut a live record on the show – is available.

The pair joined Fallon for an interview to discuss Neil’s new album, “A Letter Home”, which was recorded at, and distributed by, White’s Third Man Records in Nashville.

The project features covers of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot and more.

For the appearance, White brought his refurbished 1947 Voice-O-Graph recording booth where Young recorded the project; the machine allows users to record a song direct-to-vinyl so that they can leave with a finished record of their performance.

Neil then stepped into the booth and recorded a version of Willie Nelson’s 1961 song, “Crazy” (a legendary hit for Patsy Cline), in front of the studio audience; Fallon then played the vinyl to demonstrate the finished product.

Young also recorded a web-exclusive video performance in the booth of Ivory Joe Hunter’s “Since I Met You Baby.”

Due May 27, Young’s “A Letter Home” is being released as a full limited-edition box set.

The package will include a standard 12” vinyl LP, an audiophile vinyl version, seven 6” clear vinyl discs, a standard CD, a standard DVD, a digital download and a 32-page, 12” x 12” book.
