Lars Ulrich shares Metallica album update

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich says the band are in the final stages of completing the follow-up to 2008’s “Death Magnetic.”

“We’re now coming towards the end of the musical creative process,” Ulrich tells Metal Forces, “and we’re starting to look ahead and the process of how we’re gonna share this record with the universe. The month of June is basically when we’re gonna sit down and figure what we’re gonna do with it all, what we’re gonna call it and what’s gonna be on it.

Greg Fidelman is 24/7 on this record and has been since last summer. He’s doing an insanely great job and has been putting his heart and soul in it pretty much every waking moment of his life in helping us engineer and produce this record.”

Ulrich cautions that the project’s release plans have yet to be determined.

“If the record doesn’t come out this year then it won’t be because it’s not done,” he says. “It will be because there’s some sort of cosmic reason that it would be smarter to hold onto it until next year. But the record will be done this summer.”

Metallica and its members have taken breaks from the studio for live dates and various events throughout the recording process: they performed the anthem earlier this month as the San Francisco Giants hosted the 4th annual Metallica Night at AT &T Park, and delivered a 2016 Record Store Day performance at Rasputin Music in Berkeley, CA in April.

In addition, James Hetfield co-hosted the third annual "Acoustic-4-A-Cure" benefit concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco on May 15, guitarist Kirk Hammett joined Elton John in Las Vegas for a performance of his 1973 classic, “Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting”, and Ulrich was among the guests featured on an episode of Join Or Die – comedian Craig Ferguson's new show on the History channel – to debate history’s most influential band.
