The rockers will be honored alongside Tina Turner, Todd Rundgren, The Go-Go’s, Carole King and Jay-Z at the upcoming 36th annual Induction event.
The six artists were chosen from a field of 16 nominees, with the Foo Fighters, The Go-Go’s and Jay-Z gaining entry on their first ballot consideration, while Tina Turner won the Fan Ballot with more than half a million votes.
The 2021 event will see Turner and King and Dave Grohl become two-time inductees.
To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.
Ballots were sent to an international voting body of more than 1,200 artists, including current living Inductees, historians and members of the music industry. Factors such as an artist’s musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique are taken into consideration.
The late Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Randy Rhoads will be recognized with the Musical Excellence Award alongside Billy Preston and LL Cool J; Kraftwerk, Gil Scott Heron and Charley Patton will get the Early Influence Award; and, Sussex Records founder Clarence Avant will be given the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
“This diverse class of talented Inductees reflects the Rock Hall’s ongoing commitment to honor artists whose music created the sound of youth culture”, says John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Foundation. “It will make for an unforgettable live celebration of music in October at this year’s Induction Ceremony in Cleveland.”
The 36th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 8 p.m. ET at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio with a radio simulcast on SiriusXM’s Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Radio channel 310; the Induction Ceremony will air at a later date on HBO and stream on HBO Max.
Tickets will go on sale to the public and RRHOF members in July.
Among the nominated artists who failed to secure support for induction this year were Iron Maiden, Devo, New York Dolls, Rage Against The Machine, and Kate Bush.
