Rock News Artist Of The Year No. 10 – AEROSMITH

Aerosmith began 2022 by cancelling their 2022 European tour as the pandemic continued to affect the live music industry around the world; it was originally set for 2020 and rescheduled twice before the band shut it down.

In March, the group announced dates for their ongoing “Deuces Are Wild” residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas, NV, with 24 shows set for this year, including scattered dates running from June to December.

On the heels of the news came word that drummer Joey Kramer would sit out the series this year “so he can focus his full attention on his family during these uncertain times," the band said in a statement, while revealing that Kramer’s tech, John Douglas, would step in for the shows.

Aerosmith released a vintage live package, “Aerosmith 1971 – The Road Starts Hear”, in April; first issued in a sold-out, limited edition run on vinyl and cassette as a 2021 Record Store Day exclusive, the recently discovered recording captures the Boston rockers in an early rehearsal setting, with five of the seven songs going on to appear on their 1973 self-titled debut.

Just weeks before the Las Vegas residency was scheduled to start, dates in June and July were cancelled as Aerosmith announced that Steven Tyler relapsed and voluntarily entered a treatment program while experiencing issues following recent foot surgery.

In late June, Kramer’s wife, Linda, died at the age of 55, with no further details provided about her passing as the drummer continued his leave of absence from the band.

Joe Perry hit the road for a few summer solo dates in July before Aerosmith regrouped in September to play a 50th Anniversary concert at Boston’s Fenway Park, and then kicked off the fall 2022 Las Vegas shows with Douglas on drums.

This past week, the band was forced to cancel a pair of residency dates as Tyler continues to recover from an undisclosed illness; Aerosmith are scheduled to wrap the “Deuces Are Wild" series on December 11.
