Queen rock vintage Under Pressure performances on The Greatest Live

Queen rock a mix of vintage 1980s performances of their classic track “Under Pressure” on the latest episode of the weekly series The Greatest Live.

Featuring vocals by Freddie Mercury and David Bowie, the 1981 No.1 UK hit had been recorded during a marathon wine-fuelled 24-hour session at Montreux’s Mountain Studios.

“You already had four precocious boys, and David, who was precocious enough for all of us,” recalled Brian May in Mojo. “Passions ran very high. I found it very hard because I got so little of my own way. But David had a real vision and he took over the song lyrically.”

On the stage, however, Queen claimed "Under Pressure" as their own, right down to the head-turning stagewear that gave the song an added dimension.

The first performance in the compilation sees Freddie take command of the Milton Keynes Bowl on June 5, 1982 of the band’s Hot Space tour (a show later released as “Queen On Fire: Live At The Bowl”); fast forward to a May 1985 appearance in Japan and 1986 stop in Budapest, Hungary before the footage wraps up at London’s Wembley Stadium in July 1986, where Freddie rose to the occasion in his iconic Diana Moseley-designed military-style yellow cropped jacket – for what would prove to be his last-ever performances in the capital.

David Bowie to release Aladdin Sane 50th anniversary editions

David Bowie will release a series of 50th anniversary editions of the late rocker’s 1973 album, “Aladdin Sane”, on April 14.

Issued just ten months after his breakthrough album, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars”, the album was launched with a pair of hit singles: “The Jean Genie” and “Drive-In Saturday”; the cover featured Ziggy’s iconic makeup while the title track and songs such as “Panic In Detroit”, “Lady Grinning Soul” and “Time” marked a significant musical progression, adding brass, woodwind, soulful backing vocals and the distinctive piano of Mike Garson.

“Aladdin Sane” delivered Bowie his first UK No. 1 album and first to chart in the US Top 20.

One week before its Golden Jubilee, “Aladdin Sane” will be released as a limited edition 50th anniversary half-speed mastered LP and a picture disc LP pressed from the same master.

This new pressing was cut on a customized late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics from 192kHz restored masters of the original master tapes, with no additional processing on transfer.

To launch the 50th anniversary reissues, Bowie is sharing an upgraded 4K version of the official video for the set’s original lead single, “The Jean Genie.”

David Bowie’s team is sharing an alternative version of newly-upgraded rare video footage of a 1972 UK television performance of “Oh! You Pretty Things” as part of the ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations of his album, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars.”

Bowie – as Ziggy and joined by his band, The Spiders From Mars – can be seen delivering the single from his 1971 record, “Hunky Dory”, during an appearance on the classic BBC music series The Old Grey Whistle Test.

“Oh! You Pretty Things” was one of three songs – alongside “Queen Bitch” from “Hunky Dory” and “Five Years” from “Ziggy Stardust” – that the rocker delivered just days before the launch of the first Ziggy Stardust tour.

“Hunky Dory” had been released less than two months earlier and the Ziggy Stardust album opener wouldn't be available to fans for a few months yet.

“So, of the songs recorded, ‘Oh! You Pretty Things’ would probably have been the best advert for the tour, in that it was freshest in the public memory, having spent several weeks on the UK singles chart for Peter Noone the previous May and June, when it peaked at No. 14,” notes Bowie’s team. “However, in their wisdom, the BBC didn't broadcast ‘Oh! You Pretty Things’ for another ten years, probably considering the song a little too mainstream (due to the Noone connection) for the often chin-strokingly serious TOGWT.

“All three tracks were eventually released officially on the Best Of Bowie DVD (including an alternate take of Oh! You Pretty Things) and they still look and sounds as fresh and exciting today as they ever did.”

David Bowie’s team is sharing a demo version of “Queen Bitch” ahead of the November 25 release of an expansive box set featuring unreleased material from the year leading up the release of his late 1971 album, “Hunky Dory.”

Bowie’s team describe the “Queen Bitch” demo as “a laid-back affair with possibly more of a Velvets’ ‘Loaded’ feel than the full swagger of the ‘Hunky Dory’ version.”

The track is one of 16 song demos on the first disc of “Divine Symmetry”, a 4-CD/Blu-Ray and digital equivalent package – subtitled “An Alternative Journey Through Hunky Dory” – that also contains BBC radio sessions and live and studio recordings, including 48 previously unreleased tracks/demos from the period, and new alternative mixes by original co-producer Ken Scott.

Two books accompany “Divine Symmetry”: a 100-page hardback book featuring exclusive memorabilia and photos alongside a 60-page replica composite of Bowie’s notebooks from the era featuring handwritten lyrics, costume drawings, recording notes and set lists.

“Hunky Dory” followed 1970’s “The Man Who Sold The World” as Bowie’ fourth studio album; the project delivered classic tracks like “Changes”, “Oh! You Pretty Things”, “Andy Warhol” and “Life On Mars?”

David Bowie will release “Divine Symmetry”, an expansive box set featuring unreleased material from the year leading up the release of his late 1971 album, “Hunky Dory.”

Due November 25, the 4-CD/Blu-Ray and digital equivalent package – subtitled “An Alternative Journey Through Hunky Dory” – contains home demos, BBC radio sessions and live and studio recordings, including 48 previously unreleased tracks/demos from the period, and new alternative mixes by original co-producer Ken Scott.

Two books accompany “Divine Symmetry”: a 100-page hardback book featuring exclusive memorabilia and photos alongside a 60-page replica composite of Bowie’s notebooks from the era featuring handwritten lyrics, costume drawings, recording notes and set lists.

The sleeve notes have been written for the release by Bowie expert Tris Penna, along with contributions from Ken Scott, lifelong Bowie friends Geoff MacCormack and George Underwood, singer Dana Gillespie, guitarist Mark Pritchett, Friars Aylesbury promoter David Stopps, publisher Bob Grace and photographer Louanne Richards.

1971 was a pivotal year for Bowie: he signed a record deal with RCA, met Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, and Iggy Pop while in New York, became a father and penned the song “Kooks” as a show of paternal pride, played live for the first time that June with Mick Ronson, Woody Woodmansey and Trevor Bolder, the band that would later be christened The Spiders From Mars and recorded the classic album “Hunky Dory.”

Bowie’s team is launching “Divine Symmetry” with a version of “Kooks” that was recorded by Bowie and guitarist Mick Ronson for the BBC’s Sounds Of The 70s program presented by Bob Harris and first broadcast by BBC Radio on October 4, 1971.

Bowie will release a vinyl edition of “Divine Symmetry” on February 24, 2023.

David Bowie’s team are streaming audio of an exclusive mix of the rocker’s 1983 hit, “Modern Love”, ahead of its inclusion in the film and companion soundtrack album to the upcoming documentary, “Moonage Daydream.”

Directed by Brett Morgen, the project is billed as “a new feature film, concert documentary and experiential cinematic odyssey” that follows Bowie’s life and musical career.

The first film sanctioned by Bowie’s estate shares its title with the song from the singer’s 1972 album classic, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” which introduced the world to his iconic, gender-bending, and groundbreaking stage persona Ziggy Stardust.

The film will feature Bowie through his own voice and feature 48 musical tracks, mixed from their original stems.

The newly-announced soundtrack album features songs spanning Bowie’s career and includes previously unheard material, unique mixes created for the film and this release along with dialogue from Bowie himself.

Highlights include a previously unreleased live medley of “The Jean Genie / Love Me Do / The Jean Genie” recorded live at the final Ziggy Stardust concert at Hammersmith Odeon in 1973, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar’ other rarities include an early version of the “Hunky Dory” favourite, “Quicksand”, and a previously=unreleased live version of “Rock ’n’ Roll With Me” from the legendary 1974 Soul Tour.

“Moonage Daydream” will screen in cinemas and select IMAX theaters on September 16, with HBO Documentary Films securing North American rights for streaming and cable in spring 2023.

The companion soundtrack will be issued in sync with the September 16 launch, with a 2CD version due November 18 and a 3LP edition to arrive next year,

Directed by Brett Morgen, the project is billed as “a new feature film, concert documentary and experiential cinematic odyssey” that follows Bowie’s life and musical career.

The first film sanctioned by Bowie’s estate shares its title with the song from the singer’s 1972 album classic, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” which introduced the world to his iconic, gender-bending, and groundbreaking stage persona Ziggy Stardust.

Morgen was granted access to Bowie’s archives by his estate in 2017 and presented him with master recordings as well as never-before-seen 35mm and 16mm reels of unreleased performances, all of which will appear on screen for the first time.

“Moonage Daydream” will screen in cinemas and select IMAX theaters on September 16, with HBO Documentary Films securing North American rights for streaming and cable in spring 2023.

David Bowie’s team is sharing video footage from a landmark 1972 UK television performance of “Starman” as part of the ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations of his album, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars.”

The July 6 broadcast on the BBC’s Top Of The Pops was recorded a day earlier at the BBC Television Centre in White City. Considered one of the most essential pieces of music television ever broadcast, the appearance influenced generations of musicians, artists and writers who saw it at the time and countless others who have since seen it over the decades, from bootleg VHS copies to YouTube clips.

The performance launched Bowie to stardom. Thursday 6th July, 1972, is said to be 'the day that invented the 80’s’ as so many musicians who went on to be household names saw the performance and it changed their lives. Those watching that night included U2’s Bono, The Cure’s Robert Smith, Boy George, Adam Ant, Mick Jones of the Clash, Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, Morrissey and Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Siouxsie Sioux, Toyah Willcox, John Taylor and Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode and many more.

“There's no doubt that Bowie's appearance on Top Of The Pops was a pivotal moment in British musical history,” says BBC 6Music broadcaster Marc Riley. “Like the Sex Pistols at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester in '76, his performance lit the touchpaper for thousands of kids who up till then had struggled to find a catalyst in their lives.”

Appearing in a brightly-coloured rainbow jumpsuit and dyed bright red hair, Bowie wrapped his arm around Mick Ronson's shoulder, revealing his white-coloured fingernails and upon singing the line "I had to phone someone, so I picked on you ooh ooh”, he pointed at the camera, singing to the audience directly.

Top Of The Pops was not the first performance of “Starman” on television: the first took place on the Granada Television regional children’s music show Lift Off With Ayshea, presented by Ayshea Brough. Recorded on June 15th and broadcast on the 21st, no viewable copy of this performance has been found to exist.

“The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars” is available as a limited edition 50th anniversary half speed mastered LP and a picture disc, featuring the same master and a replica promotional poster for the album.

David Bowie celebrates Ziggy Stardust 50th anniversary with Starman remix

David Bowie is streaming a new remix of “Starman” in sync with the 50th anniversary of the release of his 1972 album, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars.”

“Starman (Top Of The Pops Version 2022 Remix)” features Bowie’s iconic performance of the single on BBC’s Top Of The Pops, considered among the most defining televised music appearances in history as it went on to influence generations of musicians, artists and writers who saw it at the time and countless others who have since seen it over the decades, from bootleg VHS copies to YouTube clips.

The Top Of The Pops broadcast recording, taken from the BBC’s master, was released on the “Starman” 7" picturer disc in 2012 and now changes hands for hundreds of pounds. Back in 1972, the Musicians Union rules stated that to appear on Top Of The Pops, the artist must re-record their track and, in this case, sing live over the top.

This new version of “Starman” takes the backing track (recorded at Trident Studios) and backing vocals, featuring a one-off Bowie ad-lib “Hey Brown Cow”, recorded for the show and adds the lead vocals from the album version. The 2022 remix was created by Ziggy Stardust co-producer Ken Scott from the multi-tracks earlier this year.

The landmark anniversary continues with a June 17 release of “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust…” as a limited edition half-speed mastered LP and a picture disc, featuring the same master and a replica promotional poster for the album.

David Bowie will release two very special 50th anniversary vinyl editions of his 1972 album classic, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars”, on June 17.

Originally introduced with the hit lead single, “Starman”, the record introduced the world to the singer’s iconic, gender-bending stage persona Ziggy Stardust.

The project reached No. 5 on the UK album charts and went on to become regarded as a groundbreaking and influential project that was added to the National Recording Registry in 2016 by the US Library of Congress.

To mark its 50th anniversary, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust…” will be issued as a limited edition half-speed mastered LP and a picture disc, featuring the same master and a replica promotional poster for the album.

This new pressing was cut on a customised late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics from 192kHz restored masters of the original Trident Studios master tapes, with no additional processing on transfer; the half speed was cut by John Webber at AIR Studios.

David Bowie’s social media team are streaming a new lyric video for “Starman”, to mark the 50th anniversary of its release as the lead single from his 1972 album classic, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars.”

Issued in the UK on April 28, 1972 and in the US three weeks later on May 20, “Starman” followed 1969’s “Space Oddity” as Bowie’s second UK Top 10 hit and the first preview of his fifth studio record and new alter ago, Ziggy Stardust.

Following its release in June, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust…” reached No. 5 on the UK album charts and went on to become regarded as a groundbreaking and influential project that was added to the National Recording Registry by the US Library of Congress in 2016.

Bowie’s career is being explored in the new documentary, “Moonage Daydream”, by director Brett Morgan.

Billed as the first film sanctioned by Bowie’s estate, the project explores how Bowie worked across several disciplines, not just music and film but also dance, painting, sculpture, video and audio collage, screenwriting, acting, and live theatre.

The film – which features Bowie through his own voice and features 48 musical tracks, mixed from their original stems – is premiering this month at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival ahead of its international release in cinemas and select IMAX theaters, with HBO Documentary Films securing North American rights for streaming and cable in spring 2023.

David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream announced

David Bowie’s estate has announced the first details of a new documentary about the music icon entitled “Moonage Daydream.”

Directed by Brett Morgan, the project – which is nearing its completion – is billed as “a new feature film, concert documentary and experiential cinematic odyssey” that follows Bowie’s life and musical career.

The first film sanctioned by Bowie’s estate shares its title with the song from the singer’s 1972 album classic, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” which introduced the world to his iconic, gender-bending, and groundbreaking stage persona Ziggy Stardust.

“Moonage Daydream” will explore how Bowie worked across several disciplines, not just music and film but also dance, painting, sculpture, video and audio collage, screenwriting, acting, and live theatre. The film will feature Bowie through his own voice and feature 48 musical tracks, mixed from their original stems.

Morgen was granted access to Bowie’s archives by his estate in 2017 and presented him with master recordings as well as never-before-seen 35mm and 16mm reels of unreleased performances, all of which will appear on screen for the first time.

“Moonage Daydream” will premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival next month ahead of its international release in cinemas and select IMAX theaters, with HBO Documentary Films securing North American rights for streaming and cable in spring 2023.

David Bowie figure unveiled at Madame Tussauds London

A David Bowie figure has been unveiled at Madame Tussauds London as part of the tourist attraction’s newly-launched Music Festival experience.

Based on a photograph by Masayoshi Sukita taken in New York in February 1973, this is the second Bowie figure created by the wax museum, following a previous one for which David sat in 1983.

The singer cane be seen in the character of his infamous alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, complete with the Starman’s signature red hairstyle, cosmic jumpsuit and celestial makeup made famous in the 1970s.

Madame Tussauds Music Festival zone offers guests the opportunity to snap a selfie with Rihanna, pose with Beyoncé and Amy Winehouse, jam with Ed Sheeran, hang backstage in the glam tent with Little Mix and then stop by the 60s and 70s tent to witness rock and pop legends Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie headline like in their heyday.

“David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust transcends generations and music genres, making him the ultimate headliner to launch our new Music Festival zone,” says Tim Waters, General Manager at Madame Tussauds London. “We were honoured to work with his estate in what would have been his 75th year and play our small part in keeping his inimitable legacy alive for generations to come."

Bowie passed away from liver cancer on January 10, 2016, just two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his 25th album, “Blackstar.”

David Bowie premieres 2000 performance video of Toy album tracks

David Bowie’s social media team are premiering previously-unreleased video of a 2000 performance of a pair of vintage tracks that were re-recorded for the recently-available “Toy” album.

The music icon can be seen delivering two mid-1960s songs – “I Dig Everything” and “The London Boys” – live at the BBC Radio Theatre, with the band that played his Glastonbury set that same year, following which they entered a New York City studio to record the “Toy” album.

While video footage of both tunes was cut from the original BBC broadcast; audio of twenty tracks from the appearance was included in the 2021 release of the “David Bowie 5: Brilliant Adventure (1992–2001)” box set.

The previously-unreleased “Toy” – which features new interpretations of songs Bowie first recorded between 1964-1971 – was referenced for years as the singer’s “lost album” before its official release in the latest box set and as the “Toy (Box)”, an expanded package that deliver 38 tracks and includes the original studio album alongside a collection of alternative mixes and versions, and a set of stripped-down, acoustic-based mixes.

David Bowie streams official 75th birthday playlist

David Bowie’s social media team are streaming an official playlist in honor of the late rocker’s 75th birthday this month.

“For those of you who don’t do audio streaming, we’ve curated the David Bowie 75 Official Playlist,” says the team. “Enjoy a whole load of Bowie’s most celebrated tracks and music videos from across the decades all in one place for your sound + vision pleasure.”

Bowie’s estate launched two immersive pop-ups in New York and London in October – 75 days before his birthday on January 8 – as part of a year-long celebration marking the milestone.

The London location at 14 Heddon Street is where the cover of his 1972 album classic, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”, was shot, while the 150 Wooster Street spot is steps away from Bowie’s long-time downtown New York City neighbourhood.

The “Bowie 75” pop-ups in both cities are currently hosting a number of discounts ahead of their closures on Sunday, January 23.

David Bowie streams box set edition of lost 2001 album Toy

David Bowie is streaming the newly-released box set edition of his lost 2001 album, “Toy.”

Available in 3CD and 610” vinyl editions, the “Toy (Box)” package features 38 tracks and includes the original studio album alongside a collection of alternative mixes and versions, and a set of stripped-down, acoustic-based mixes.

Following a legendary 2000 performance at the Glastonbury Festival, Bowie took his live band into the studio to capture new interpretations of songs he’d first recorded from 1964-1971.

Bowie’s inspiration for the project came after adding a new arrangement of his 1966 track, “Can’t Help Thinking About Me”, to his appearance on VH1’s “Storytellers” series, marking its first performance in three decades; the rocker kept the song in the setlist for the short promotional tour for the “hours…” album, and in early 2000 David and producer Mark Plati compiled a list of some of Bowie’s earliest songs to re-record.

After recording “Toy” live in studio with his band, Bowie’s plan was to deliver an instant, surprise release of the album as soon as it was completed, but the technology to do that was still several years away and he decided the shelve the set, instead moving on to create new music for the “Heathen” record.

"Toy is like a moment in time captured in an amber of joy, fire and energy,” says Plati. “It’s the sound of people happy to be playing music. David revisited and re-examined his work from decades prior through prisms of experience and fresh perspective - a parallel not lost on me as I now revisit it twenty years later. From time to time, he used to say ‘Mark, this is our album’ - I think because he knew I was so deeply in the trenches with him on that journey. I’m happy to finally be able to say it now belongs to all of us.”

A standard edition of the “Toy” album was included in the recently-released box set, “David Bowie 5. Brilliant Adventure (1992-2001).”
