VIDEO: Metallica frontman unplugs for Blue Oyster Cult classic

James Hetfield performs with daughter Cali at 2nd annual Acoustic For A Cure

Metallica frontman James Hetfield performed the 1976 Blue Oyster Cult classic, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” at the second annual "Acoustic-4-A-Cure" benefit concert at The Masonic in San Francisco on May 15.

Hetfield was joined by Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and a pedal steel guitarist for the song; the lineup also performed the Metallica track “Mama Said” from 1996’s “Load.”

The Metallica guitarist also delivered an acoustic version of Adele’s “Crazy For You” – from 2008’s “19” – with his 16 year-old daughter Cali on vocals.

Hetfield and Sammy Hagar co-hosted the event, which also included performances by Joe Satriani, Pat Monahan from Train, Adam Sandler and Linda Perry.

All proceeds from "Acoustic-4-A-Cure" will be donated to fund children's brain tumor research at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, one of the nation's leading children's medical facilities.

The inaugural 2014 edition included sets from Satriani, Monahan, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and Heart's Nancy Wilson.

Blue Oyster Cult founder Allen Lanier dead at 67

Blue Oyster Cult founding member Allen Lanier died Wednesday of chronic lung disease at the age of 67.

“We have extremely sad news to report,” posted the band. “We’ve lost our friend and bandmate Allen Lanier. Allen succumbed to complications from C.O.P.D. He is survived by his wife Dory, sister Mary Anne and mother Martha.”

“Although he retired from touring in 2006, Allen returned to the stage for what turned out to be his final appearance, reuniting with BӦC at the 40th Anniversary show in New York this past November.”

“DFTR [don’t fear the reaper] sweet man. We love you and miss you.”

Lanier played keyboards and rhythm guitar in Blue Oyster Cult. He was a founding member of the group when they started as Soft White Underbelly on Long Island, New York in 1967.

Lanier originally left BOC in 1985, but returned in 1987; he later retired from performing with them in 2006.

In addition to his work with Blue Oyster Cult, he also contributed to music by Patti Smith, Jim Carroll, The Dictators and The Clash, among others.

VIDEO: Blue Oyster Cult guitarist covers Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody by himself

Blue Oyster Cult guitarist/keyboardist Richie Castellano has put together a recording/video of Queen’s "Bohemian Rhapsody" – where he plays all the parts by himself.

The talented player has been with BOC since 2004, when he initially signed on as bassist. In early 2007, when original member Allen Lanier retired from the band, Castellano eventually switched to dual duties on keyboards and rhythm guitar.

On his blog, Richie explains his discovery of the Queen smash as a kid, which began his lifelong fascination with the song:

“In 1992 (I think) I went to the movies with my dad to see ‘Wayne's World.’ When it got to the famous car scene and Bohemian Rhapsody came on, I asked my dad, ‘What is this?’ He said, ‘This is Queen.’ I remember listening as the song just kept adding more and more layers of awesomeness until it just erupted at the famous headbanging climax. I was sold. This was officially the best song I'd ever heard and it only took one listen of only half of it to realize that.”

There’s lots more - check out the full story of creating and recording the song and video on Richie’s blog here.
