Former Boston drummer Sib Hashian dead at 67

Former Boston drummer John Thomas "Sib" Hashian died March 22 at the age 67 after collapsing on stage during a performance on the Legends Of Rock Cruise in the Caribbean.

TMZ reports Hashian’s son, Adam, confirmed the drummer suddenly collapsed midset while playing with former Boston lead guitarist Barry Goudreau, while a witness tells the media outlet that attempts to revive him with CPR and a defibrillator failed.

The Legends Of Rock Cuise – featuring original Foreigner vocalist Lou Gramm, John Cafferty, The Grass Roots and former members of the Beach Boys and Kansas, among others – departed from Miami, FL on March 18 with planned stops including Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.

TMZ has been told the cruise will continue and other musicians will be performing tributes to the drummer.

Hashian joined Boston following the departure of original drummer Jim Masdea at the request of Epic Records. The rocker first performed with founder Tom Scholz, singer Brad Delp, bassist Fran Sheehan and Goudreau as part of a live performance audition for the label before a record deal was signed in 1975.

Hashian appeared on Boston’s 1976 self-titled debut and its follow-up, 1978’s “Don’t Look Back”; combined, the two projects have sold more than 24 million copies in the US alone.

The drummer left Boston during the recording of the band’s third release, 1986’s “Third Stage”, only to be replaced by a returning Masdea.

Hashian later sued Scholz for back royalties and the pair settled the matter out of court.

The drummer owned a record shop and a chain of tanning salons in Boston; he occasionally performed with Goudreau, Sheehan and Delp over the years, and dabbled as an actor in local theater.

Hashian has a son and two daughters – one of which, Lauren, gave birth to a daughter with boyfriend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in 2015.

Boston recently announced the addition of 21 concert dates to their upcoming summer tour of North America.

Boston have expanded their Hyper Space North American tour with the addition of 21 concert dates across the continent.

Following a previously-revealed opening run of ten shows in April, the band have added a second leg starting June 14 in Mountain View, CA and announced that Joan Jett & The Blackhearts will be along as special guests.

One dollar from each ticket purchased this summer will be donated to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, who are committed to ending the slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans, as well as Mercy For Animals, who utilize a broad range of strategic approaches that seek to expose cruelty, prosecute abusers, and inspire consumers to make compassionate food choices.

"I am thrilled to have Joan and her band on tour with us this summer,” says Boston leader and guitarist Tom Sholz. “Not only is she an amazing rock and roll performing artist, but even more exciting to me is that she is a fellow vegetarian and shares compassion for animal welfare."

Presale tickets for Boston and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts fan club members begins March 7 at 10am local time and runs through March 9 at 10pm local time.

General public seats will go on sale March 10 at LiveNation.com and on the Live Nation app.

Four dozen concerts are planned, with more dates to be revealed soon.

Last year, Boston toured the continent to mark the 40th anniversary of their self-titled debut album.

The group’s most recent release is 2013’s “Life Love & Hope.”

Boston cancel three North Carolina concerts over transgender law

Boston have announced the cancellation of three concerts in North Carolina next month in protest over the state’s newly-passed laws limiting the rights of its transgender citizens.

Band leader Tom Scholz released a statement confirming that 40th anniversary tour dates in Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh have been shut down over the human rights issues related to the HB2 law.

“While the enjoyment of our fans is our central concern, and we have been looking forward to celebrating forty years of history performing for our listeners in North Carolina with spectacular live shows this spring, human rights are more important,” says Scholz. “It is with deep regret, that I must announce the cancellation of our upcoming shows on May 4, 5 & 6 in Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh in order to raise awareness, and protest in the strongest terms, the recent passage of HB2, the so called ‘North Carolina bathroom law.’”

“HB2 has the appearance of an oppressive discriminatory law against a small minority, who already have to deal with a narrow-minded world regarding issues beyond their control which they did nothing to bring upon themselves,” Scholz continued. “Other aspects of the new law arguably encourage bigotry. With thousands of fans in attendance at our shows, it is likely that some members of our audience and/or their loved ones are affected on a daily basis by this ugly expression of intolerance.”

“My sincere apologies to our fans who have already made arrangements to attend these shows,” added the guitarist. “The removal of the shows from our schedule is a major disappointment. It has always been my wish to inspire people with Boston's music. Hopefully the sacrifices we are all making here will inspire people to do the right thing in the future. We look forward to the day that the state government of North Carolina will come to its senses and treat ALL individuals with equal freedom in their pursuit of happiness here in the United States.”

Tickets for the cancelled Boston shows will be refunded at point of purchase. Tickets purchased online or by phone will be automatically refunded.

Boston will launch their 40th anniversary tour on April 29 in Hollywood, FL.

The group join a growing list of performers – including Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Ringo Starr and others – who are taking economic action against the state over the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act passed by Governor Pat McCrory that blocks transgender individuals from using public bathrooms that match their gender identity, stops cities from passing anti-discrimination ordinances to protect gay and transgender people, and bans state lawsuits for any type of workplace discrimination.

The News & Observer in Raleigh reports the economic losses in Wake County alone over HB2 have quadrupled over the last seven days, according to the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The visitors bureau estimates the County alone has lost more than $3.1 million because of HB2.

“We continue to receive concerns from definite and tentative groups regarding HB2,” said Dennis Edwards, the bureau’s president and CEO. “We also have a great deal of concern about those groups that were going to consider Raleigh and North Carolina but have now taken us off of their list of consideration due to the bill.”

According to an NBC analysis, North Carolina has lost between $39.7 million and $186 million due to companies and events not coming to the state in protest.

Boston announce 40th anniversary tour

Boston have announced dates for their 40th anniversary tour.

The North American run begins April 29 in Hollywood, Florida and tickets are now on sale.

The band says the tour promises to be a celebration honoring the group’s loyal fans, many who have supported Boston since 1976, when the self-titled debut album first hit the airwaves and took rock radio by storm.

Led by the singles "More Than A Feeling", "Foreplay/Long Time" and "Peace Of Mind", the album peaked at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 132 weeks. “Boston” went on to sell more than 17 million copies in the States alone (25 million worldwide) on its way to becoming the best-selling pop debut album in history at the time.

The group’s second album, “Don’t Look Back”, stormed out of the gate upon its release as a No. 1 US hit: selling 4 million copies in the States in its first month and 7 million in total.

Legal battles between the band and its label, Epic Records, held up work on a third record, which finally surfaced in 1986 as “Third Stage” after an 8-year wait.

More 8-year gaps followed before 1994’s “Walk On” and 2002’s “Corporate America” arrived, which stretched to 11 years before album number six – 2013’s “Life, Love & Hope”, surfaced.

All told, Boston have sold more than 31 million albums in the US to date.

Boston: Rockline replay available

Boston guitarists Tom Scholz and Gary Pihl were the featured guests on North American rock radio series Rockline on December 4, and a replay of the broadcast is available.

The pair were on hand to promote the band’s newly-released album, “Life Love & Hope.”

The project is the group’s first new album since 2002’s “Corporate America.”

“Life Love & Hope” includes lead vocals from Brad Delp, Tommy DeCarlo, Kimberley Dahme, David Victor and Scholz, and features tracks with the classic Boston sound, as well as the latest in the evolution of Scholz' musical artistry.

"I intentionally stayed close to the early Boston style on some of the songs, even using the same amps and instruments,” says Scholz, “on others I let my imagination run wild."

"These are songs from the heart, each of them taking many months of effort to write, arrange, perform and record, always up to the demands of Boston's harshest critic, me,” added Scholz. “They have all been meticulously recorded to analogue tape on the same machines and equipment used for Boston's hits for the past 35 years."

AUDIO: Boston premiere Life Love & Hope title track

Boston are premiering the title track from their forthcoming album, “Life Love & Hope”, due December 3.

The song follows the release of the project’s lead single, “Heaven On Earth” – hear it here.

“Life Love & Hope” includes lead vocals from the late Brad Delp, Tommy DeCarlo, Kimberley Dahme, David Victor and Tom Scholz, and features tracks with the classic Boston sound, as well as the latest in the evolution of Scholz' musical artistry.

The project is the band’s first new album since 2002’s “Corporate America.”

"I probably would have kept going," Scholz tells Billboard. "But it was getting a little long. It was very, very hard work. All of these songs, they're basically done when I don't think I can express myself any better with the music for whatever I was trying to say. That might be because I'm so burnt on it that I don't think I can do any better or because I think it would be really dangerous to try to change it any more - that I just might make it worse or lose something. So I stop when I don't think I can do any better, and it was the same with this album. I stopped when I thought it was as good as it's going to get."
