Steve Miller Band expands 2025 Tour

The Steve Miller Band has expanded its 2025 tour plans with the addition of new concert dates.

Set to open August 15 at the Bethel Woods Center in Bethel, NY, the series now sees a total of 31 shows on the schedule, which will wrap up in Anaheim, CA on November 8.

Tickets for the newly-announced dates go on sale this Friday, May 9 at the usual outlets.

Miller will receive the Les Paul Spirit Award from The Les Paul Foundation during a June 9 event in Nashville, TN.

The annual award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the late, great Les Paul through innovation, engineering, technology and/or music.

In addition to the award, a grant from the Les Paul Foundation will be made in the honoree's name to the charity of his choice. Like Les Paul, Steve Miller personifies the spirit of excellence through musicianship and industry recognition.

Steve Miller to receive 2025 Les Paul Spirit Award

The Les Paul Foundation, whose mission is to honor and share the life, spirit and legacy of Les Paul through generations has announced the annual Les Paul Spirit Award in partnership with Gibson Gives, the philanthropic division of Gibson.

The prestigious award will be presented to legendary musical artist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steve Miller on Monday, June 9, 2025 at 6:30pm CT at a private ticketed event held at the Gibson Garage Nashville located at 209 10th Ave S, Suite 209 in downtown Nashville, TN.

The event will take place on what would have been Les Paul's 110th birthday, and marks the fourth anniversary of the Gibson Garage Nashville. The Les Paul Spirit Award was created by the Les Paul Foundation in honor of the music innovator.

The annual award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the late, great Les Paul through innovation, engineering, technology and/or music. In addition to the award, a grant from the Les Paul Foundation will be made in the honoree's name to the charity of his choice. Like Les Paul, Steve Miller personifies the spirit of excellence through musicianship and industry recognition.

Not only is he an extraordinary talent and a wonderful friend of the Les Paul Foundation, Steve holds the very distinct title of being Les' godson. Steve Miller has been a monumental presence on the American music scene for over half a century and his releases have sold tens of millions of records and been streamed billions of times. Miller's Greatest Hits (1974-1978) received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of over 15 million copies. It is among the 25 top best-selling albums of all time. If one would run through Miller's music catalog they would quickly recognize his influences - his parents were jazz aficionados and personal friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford. As a budding guitarist, Steve absorbed every lesson or piece of advice Les Paul gave him. Miller played with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, James Cotton and Paul Butterfield, all of whom inform his music to this day.

Miller's hits include "The Joker," "Take the Money and Run," "Abracadabra," "Rock'n Me," "Jet Airliner," "Swingtown," "Fly Like an Eagle," and others. The album "Fly Like an Eagle" was recently inducted to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.

Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2016) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2022) and is a member of the Visiting Committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and is a member of the Board of Directors at Jazz at Lincoln Center. On last year's Steve Miller Band tour he played to three quarters of a million fans and returned to the top of the charts with his hit "Abracadabra" via the prominent feature in "Eminem's" hit single "Houdini."

Steve's relationship with Les Paul was deeply personal and formative. Les Paul was not only a family friend but also became Miller's godfather as noted above. Their connection began in Miller's early childhood in Milwaukee, where his parents frequently attended Les Paul and Mary Ford's performances. A young Steve Miller was introduced to Les Paul who gave him his first informal guitar lessons and taught him his first three chords. Miller has often recalled how these early experiences watching Les Paul perform and receiving personal instruction were pivotal in inspiring his own musical journey. To understand how close the two families were, Steve's father "Sonny" was even the best man at Les Paul's wedding. Miller joined Les Paul on stage at his 90th birthday concert in New York city highlighting their enduring bond. Steve continues to enthrall his audiences with stories like these at his performances.

The exclusive, physical Les Paul Spirit Award for Steve Miller is made from actual hand-carved acoustic boards built by Les Paul that he used in his home studio. Les Paul designed and created the memorabilia during his life. The acoustic wood piece is a unique presentation and supported by Les' personal story. No two Les Paul Spirit Awards are exactly the same given the unique nature of the studio pieces which are being used to create them and their intrinsic value as authentic Les Paul memorabilia. Past recipients of the award have included Bob Weir (founding member of The Grateful Dead), producer and musician Nile Rodgers, U2's the Edge and Peter Frampton.

Steve Miller Band previews The Joker 50th anniversary box set

Steve Miller is sharing a series of recordings as a preview to the September 15 release of a new 50th anniversary box set revealing the development of his classic 1973 album “The Joker.”

Originally released worldwide in October 1973, “The Joker” quickly became a hit in the United States, crossing over from FM underground radio to the AM pop radio of the day. Shortly thereafter, the song went to number 1, first in the States and followed by the rest of the world.

Curate by Miller himself, “J50: The Evolution of The Joker” chronologically places the original album tracks alongside 27 previously unreleased recordings from the rocker’s personal archive - including songwriting tapes made by Miller on his TEAC 4-track in hotel rooms on the road and at live performances, plus studio outtakes and rehearsals - as well as six audio commentary tracks from Miller and exclusive liner notes from both Miller and journalist Anthony DeCurtis.

In July 1973, the band hit Capitol Record's Studio B in Los Angeles and quickly got to work, recording, mixing, and mastering the album in just 17 days with Miller producing.

"The most important rule that every kid out there who wants to make a record should remember is: When you go into the studio, be ready to do the whole performance the first time you do it, because that's going to be the best time you do it," says Miller. "The whole thing is to capture the first performance. That's a lot of what The Joker's about. It was all first takes, and first takes are always better than perfect takes"

Among the previews of the 2023 reissue is "The Joker Suite," an extended piece showcasing the musical path to the album's 5x Platinum-certified (in the US alone), worldwide No. 1 hit title track, "The Joker," with the previously unreleased "Lidi" and "Travelin'."

Also featured is "Sugar Babe Suite," a collection of three tracks spotlighting the creation of the fan-favorite opening song on the album. "Sugar Babe Suite" features a 4-track early version of the song from 1972 along with a live version from 1973, and the album version, is but one of the album's many highlights.

Miller is also sharing "Mama Church (A Cappella)," one of eight previously unreleased songs featured on the collection; it was recorded on a 4-track in a hotel room on April 21, 1972.

“The Joker” follows “Jet Airliner” and “Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma” as the third song issued in advance of the album’s release.

The archival package will be available in multiple formats, including digital, CD, and 2LP black vinyl; while a live concert video featuring the full performance will be available to stream on The Coda Collection on Amazon Prime Video.

The Steve Miller Band are sharing audio of a 1977 performance of their 1973 classic, “Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma”, as a preview to a new live album from their achives.

The song – which appeared on the group’s eighth studio album, “The Joker” – is one of 17 tracks set to appear on the May 14 release of “Steve Miller Band Live! Breaking Ground: August 3, 1977.”

The project was recorded at the Capital Center in Landover, MD during the height of the band’s success during the era.

"This show captures the band right at the peak after ‘The Joker’, and in the middle of ‘Fly Like An Eagle’ and ‘Book Of Dreams’, a stream of hits,” says Miller. “We decided to call it Breaking Ground because that's exactly what we were doing."

“Breaking Ground” has previously been previewed with audio of “Jet Airliner” from the 1977 event.

The archival package will be available in multiple formats, including digital, CD, and 2LP black vinyl; while a live concert video featuring the full performance will be available to stream on The Coda Collection on Amazon Prime Video.

Steve Miller Band announces North American tour

The Steve Miller Band has announced dates for a summer tour of North America.

The three-month series – with guest Marty Stuart – will open in Austin, TX on June 13, with shows wrapping up with a September 4 appearance at the Washington State Fair.

“Touring with Marty and the Superlatives is inspirational,” says Miller. “This is undoubtedly one of the most talented touring combinations I’ve ever been involved in. We look forward to continuing working together to explore the roots of American music.”

The summer trek will begin two days after Miller is inducted into the 2020 Songwriters Hall Of Fame during the organization’s 51st Annual Induction and Awards Dinner in New York City on June 11.

Steve Miller to be inducted into 2020 Songwriters Hall Of Fame

Steve Miller has been named as one of the inductees into the 2020 Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

The leader of The Steve Miller Band will be honored alongside Mariah Carey; Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics; The Isley Brothers; Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes; Lana Del Rey collaborator Rick Nowels; and, Motown’s William “Mickey” Stevenson at the organization’s 51st Annual Induction and Awards Dinner at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City on Thursday, June 11.

“The first thing you need to know is it’s about the song, the second thing you need to know is it’s about the song, the third thing you need to know is it’s about the song,” says SHOF Chairman Nile Rodgers. “I am very proud that we are recognizing some of the culturally most important songwriters of all time and that the 2020 slate of inductees represents diversity and unity across genres, ethnicity and gender, writers who have enriched our lives and in their time literally transformed music and helped make it what it is today.”

Established in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) serves as a vital bridge between music’s past and future. In the Hall, musical pioneers are enshrined and celebrated, while the organization’s outreach to the music community grooms the next generation of troubadours.

To qualify for induction, a songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first commercial release of a song.

“I want to thank Nile Rodgers and Linda Moran, the board, and all the members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame who voted for me and express my appreciation for the music education programs they run,” says Miller. “The SHOF provides songwriting and music programs at NYU and USC as well as providing individual scholarships.

“Writing songs and playing music has been a wonderful life for me and to be inducted into a hall where Merle Haggard, Willie Dixon, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, and Paul McCartney are in the room is an unexpected honor and I'm delighted and grateful.”

With worldwide sales of more than 60 million albums, Miller was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2016.

Steve Miller performed his 1976 classic, “Fly Like An Eagle”, on the October 9 episode of NBC-TV’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Miller was joined by The Roots for the tune as he was on hand to promote the October 11 release of a new career-spanning collection, “Welcome To The Vault.”

The rocker joined Fallon to discuss the project and his lengthy career, including how his godfather, electric guitar inventor Les Paul, showed him how to record and make records, while T-Bone Walker taught him how to play the guitar behind his head and do the splits.

“Welcome To The Vault” presents 52 audio tracks alongside 21 performances on DVD and a 100-page hard bound book with Steve’s personal photos and a 9,000 word essay by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke.

The set delivers 38 previously-unavailable rarities on the 3CD/DVD collection, including more studio and live material as well as five previously unheard songs dating back to the late '60s.

The Steve Miller Band will perform on NBC-TV’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, October 9.

The rocker will be on hand to promote the October 11 release of a new career-spanning collection, “Welcome To The Vault.”

Opening his massive archive for the first time, the 3CD + DVD package presents 52 audio tracks – including studio hits, alternate and live versions, and 5 previously-unheard songs – alongside 21 performances on DVD , with 38 previously-unreleased recordings in all housed in a 100-page hard bound book with Steve’s personal photos, and a 9,000 word essay by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke.

The DVD contains a variety of live material shot through the years, offering rare footage from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, a 1973 appearance on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, ABC In Concert 1974, a 1970 concert from the Fillmore West filmed for Dutch TV, Michigan’s Pine Knob Theatre in 1982, Steve and Les Paul at Fat Tuesdays (1990) and Austin City Limits in 2011.

The package also includes 10 guitar picks with Steve’s iconic Pegasus logo and an authentic backstage pass from the rocker’s personal vault.

Recorded in 1973 – the same year Miller released his smash album, “The Joker” – the song is one of 38 previously-unavailable rarities from his archives as presented on the 3CD/DVD package, including more studio and live material.

Due October 11, “Welcome To The Vault” presents 52 audio tracks alongside 21 performances on DVD and a 100-page hard bound book with Steve’s personal photos and a 9,000 word essay by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke.

The DVD contains a variety of live material shot through the years, offering rare footage from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, a 1973 appearance on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, ABC In Concert 1974, a 1970 concert from the Fillmore West filmed for Dutch TV, Michigan’s Pine Knob Theatre in 1982, Steve and Les Paul at Fat Tuesdays (1990) and Austin City Limits in 2011.

Miller was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2016.

The Steve Miller Band are streaming audio of a previously-unreleased live “swinging jazz” version of their 1976 hit, “Take The Money And Run”, as the latest preview to the forthcoming collection, “Welcome To The Vault.”

Featuring a guest appearance by Jimmie Vaughan, this special performance was recorded at Miller's 2016 show as part of New York's Jazz At Lincoln Center series.

The lead single from Miller’s “Fly Like An Eagle” album originally reached No. 11 on the US charts while the project peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 on its way to sales of more than four million copies in the country.

Recorded in 1975, Miller’s take is one of 38 previously unavailable rarities on the three-CD/DVD collection, including more studio and live material as well as five previously unheard songs dating back to the late '60s.

Opening his massive archive for the first time, “Welcome To The Vault” presents 52 audio tracks alongside 21 performances on DVD and a 100-page hard bound book with Steve’s personal photos and a 9,000 word essay by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke.

Due October 11, the package also includes 10 guitar picks with Steve’s iconic Pegasus logo and an authentic backstage pass from the guitarist’s personal vault.

The latest preview of the collection follows a previously-unreleased alternate versions of Miler’s 1976 US No. 1 smash, “Rock‘n Me” and “Swingtown.”

Steve Miller Band streams alternate version of Swingtown

The Steve Miller Band are streaming audio of an alternate version of their 1977 classic, “Swingtown”, as the latest preview to the forthcoming collection, “Welcome To The Vault.”

"I remember (co-writer) Chris McCarty had a basic idea for the song, and it was quite different -- quite a different intro," Miller tells Billboard. "You can hear there's sort of a musical prelude and then it goes into 'Swingtown.' And then as we were working on it, it was the era of the two-minute-and-30-second single and it had to be made for radio and there were always limitations. So I took what we had and edited and pared it down.

"It's interesting to compare the two. You sort of see what the limitations of radio can do to a piece of music. I've listened to it a lot and I really like the intro to (the alternative track). I'm glad we're getting that out there for people to hear."

The alternative version of "Swingtown" is one of 38 previously unreleased rarities on the three-CD/DVD collection, including more studio and live material as well as five previously unheard Miller songs dating back to the late '60s.

Steve Miller Band announces spring US tour dates

The Steve Miller Band has announced dates for a brief spring US tour.

The two-week series of 8 shows – billed as “An Evening With Steve Miller Band” without any opener – will hit the southeastern US and begin in Clearwater, FL on March 12 (view dates below).

Ticket presales begin Wednesday, January 16 at 10 AM local time, with general public seats available starting Friday, January 18 at 10 AM local time.

News of the group’s first dates of the year comes just two weeks after the Steve Miller Band closed out their 50th anniversary US tour in Thackerville, OK on December 30.

The group marked their landmark run with the release of a vinyl box set entitled “Complete Albums Volume 1 (1968-1976).”

The package presents remastered editions of the band’s first nine studio records - from 1968’s “Children Of The Future” to 1976's “Fly Like An Eagle” – on 180-gram vinyl; the albums were also reissued individually.

Miller was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2016.

The Steve Miller Band are streaming a live performance video of the Elmore James track, “Stranger Blues”, with Peter Frampton as a preview to the pair’s summer US tour.

The duo teamed up on the late bluesman’s 1962 single in Costa Mesa, CA on a joint trek last year that went so well that they decided to head out again in 2018.

"Music is ethereal – it moves back and forth between the past and the future," says Miller. "I'm very excited to announce that 2018 is our 50th anniversary of recording and touring together as the Steve Miller Band, and we plan to travel between the psychedelic sixties through the future with a vengeance!"

Frampton will again join Miller onstage for some mid-set jamming for the three-month summer 2018 tour, which will begin in Evansville, IN on June 12.

Ahead of the summer series, Miller and Frampton will perform a handful of shows in western Canada and the US that also includes Miller’s appearance on the final day of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Sunday, May 6.

The Steve Miller Band are celebrating their landmark anniversary with the May 18 release of a vinyl box set entitled “Complete Albums Volume 1 (1968-1976).”

The set presents remastered editions of the group’s first nine studio records - from 1968’s “Children Of The Future” to 1976's “Fly Like An Eagle” – on 180-gram vinyl; they’ll also be available individually on the same day of the project’s spring release.

The albums have also been newly-remastered for HD digital audio (96kHz/24-bit and, since February 16, are being released weekly in chronological order ahead of the box set’s arrival.
