VIDEO: Metallica guitarist interviewed at Rock In Rio

Metallica headlined the third night of this year’s Rock In Rio 4 last weekend.

The band topped a bill that also featured Slipknot, Motorhead, Coheed And Cambria, and Brazilian rockers Gloria.

Guitarist Kirk Hammett was interviewed before the show, and shared his thoughts on how metal has changed through the years, as Metallica celebrates its 30th anniversary.

“It gets more and more extreme and more and more intense,” says Kirk. “For me, growing up as a kid, I listened to all [kinds of] bands: Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, [Jimi] Hendrix. In the late 70s, there was a kind of a second generation of hard rock bands like Thin Lizzy, UFO, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Montrose – for me, that’s the stuff that really meant a lot to me. It was the heavy metal of my day, even though compared to us, or metal made today, it just sounds like classic rock.”
