Metallica-Lou Reed project confirms release date

The Metallica/Lou Reed project continues to move forward.

After launching their website last week, the guys have now confirmed additional details about the upcoming album.

The record will be entitled “Lulu,” which Reed essentially confirmed in a June interview with New York magazine. Reed said the collaboration is based on songs for a theatrical production of Frank Wedekind’s classic femme fatale “Lulu” plays.

“There are two stories ‘Lulu’s based on, and I rewrote ‘Lulu’ from the get-go, taking the original plot — mostly ‘Earth Spirit,’ not ‘Pandora’s Box’ — and followed it essentially from the point of view of Lulu and the various people who love her, until she gets involved with Jack the Ripper,” explains Reed. “The basics. So the Metallica version will have absolutely all of that and more. It’ll probably come out by November.”

And Lou was right: “Lulu” is now confirmed for an October 31 release date worldwide, with North America following on November 1.

The website reveals three of the 10 song titles so far, and will continue to release more titles in the days ahead; confirmed songs include “Junior Dad,” “Mistress Dread” and “Pumping Blood.”

"A marriage made in heaven," Reed told Rolling Stone in June in his first interview about the project. "I knew it from the first day we played together: 'Oh, man, this is perfection, right in front of me.'"

"I don't think we've ever felt this free,"
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich added, sitting next to Reed on a couch. "There's nothing that's totally outside of the boundary for us, nothing that feels like 'Oh, what happens if we go there?' The strength of ‘us’ – he gestures at Reed – ‘is it feels like we cannot land on a wrong place.’"

"They're bringing Metallica, with all that power,"
Reed confirms. "And because they're pretty sophisticated, wherever I go, they're still with me."
