Led Zeppelin: 2007 reunion funds $41 million donation to Oxford University

The effects of the 2007 Led Zeppelin reunion are still being felt, almost five years after one of rock's biggest events took place.

The Daily Mail reports funds raised by Zeppelin’s 02 Arena show in December 2007 have been donated to Oxford University.

The £26 million ($41.6 million US) donation, made by Mica Ertegun, widow of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, is understood to be one of the largest in Oxford’s 900-year history.

It will be used to set up the Mica and Ahmet Ertegun Graduate Scholarship Programme in the Humanities.

The programme will see students worldwide compete for an award to study subjects including literature, history, music, art history, Asian studies, Middle Eastern studies and archaeology.

There will be 15 scholarships to start with, and eventually at least 35 will be awarded each year.

As founder of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun was responsible for helping to shape the careers of musicians such as Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.

The 2007 Zeppelin reunion, staged in memory of Mr. Ertegun, who died in 2006, was the first time the band had played together for 19 years.
