In May, Deep Purple rescheduled dates for their “Whoosh!” UK tour for a second time; originally set to take place last fall, the series was moved to October 2021 before being delayed to 2022 due to the pandemic.

A month later, the band announced plans to release a 2002 concert recording from London’s famed Hammersmith Apollo in August; issued as part of the group’s ongoing Soundboard Series – which makes use of rare live recordings from their archives – the February 22 event was part of the group’s final tour with original member and keyboardist Jon Lord before he retired from the lineup and Don Airey moved from touring member to a full-time role.

In early September, Deep Purple teased an announcement regarding new music with some promo images and the launch of a new website that would go live the following month to reveal their covers collection, “Turning To Crime.”

Produced by Bob Ezrin and featuring songs originally done by Cream, The Yardbirds, Bob Dylan and more, the project was first previewed with a version of the 1966 Arthur Lee and Love track, “7 and 7 Is”, and was followed by their take on the 1969 Fleetwood Mac classic, “Oh Well”, and the vintage 1957 tune, "Rockin’ Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu."

Deep Purple hosted an exclusive listening session to sample the project prior to its late November release; the record debuted in the UK Top 30.
