Nazareth singer Dan McCafferty dead at 76

Legendary Nazareth vocalist Dan McCafferty has died November 8 at the age of 76.

"Dan died at 12:40 today,” shared Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew on social media. "This is the saddest announcement I ever had to make. Maryann and the family have lost a wonderful loving husband and father, I have lost my best friend and the world has lost one of the greatest singers who ever lived.

"Too upset to say anything more at this time."

No further details have been released at press time.

Agnew formed Nazareth with fellow Dunfermline, Scotland native McCafferty and guitarist Manny Charlton and drummer Darrell Sweet in 1968, after the foursome had previously played in the bassist’s local band The Shadettes.

The group released its self-titled album debut in 1971, and eventually charted in the UK with their third record, 1973’s “Razamanaz”, and a pair of single from the project; a cover of the Joni Mitchell classic, “This Flight Tonight”, from “Loud ‘n’ Proud” helped the group gain some international attention, but it was their version of The Everly Brothers' "Love Hurts" that proved to be their biggest hit, landing the band their one and only a US Top 10 single – and No.1’s in Canada, the Netherlands and South Africa – while pushing 1975’s “Hair Of The Dog” set to achieve platinum status in the region.

The original lineup remained intact, with some additions along the way, until 1990, when Charlton exited the band; albums were issued regularly up until 1999, when Sweet passed away from a heart attack; Agnew brought his son, Lee, in to handle drums, and he remains an active member to this day.

McCafferty retired from the band and touring in 2013 due to health issues, including C.O.P.D. (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease); his final studio album with Nazareth was 2014’s “Rock ‘N’ Roll Telephone.”

The singer issued his third solo album, “The Last Testament”, in 2019, while Nazareth has released a pair of albums in the past decade with singer Carl Sentance.

Nazareth have issued footage of their classic 1973 tune, “Razamanaz”, as a preview to the forthcoming live package, “No Means Of Escape.”

The performance of the title track to the band’s third album can be seen on “Live At Metropolis”, which presents the group playing before a select audience at London’s Metropolis Studios.

Due October 16, the concert film is paired with a companion career documentary, “Made In Scotland”, which traces Nazareth’s career from their formation in 1968 to their breakthrough in the 1970s, and beyond.

The package sees Lintin Osborne fronting the Scottish band following the retirement of founding member Dan McCafferty, who left the group in 2013 due to health issues.

“No Means Of Escape” will be released on DVD, Blu-ray and digitally, with “Live At Metropolis” and “Made In Scotland” available as two separate elements.

Nazareth have issued footage of their classic 1975 track, “Hair Of The Dog”, as a preview to the forthcoming live package, “No Means Of Escape.”

The song was the title track to the band’s breakthrough sixth album, which went on to sell more than 2 million copies worldwide.

Due October 16, the project presents “Live At Metropolis” – which captures the band performing before a select audience at London’s Metropolis Studios – alongside the companion career documentary, “Made In Scotland.”

The feature traces Nazareth’s career from their formation in 1968 to their breakthrough in the 1970s, and their ongoing career. The film contains classic footage and new interviews with past and present members of the band, including retired lead singer Dan McCafferty, who left the group in 2013 due to health issues.

McCafferty was replaced by frontman Lintin Osborne, who joined the Scottish rockers in 2014.

“No Means Of Escape” will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and digitally, with “Live At Metropolis” and “Made In Scotland” available as two separate elements.

Scottish rockers Nazareth will release “No Means Of Escape”, a new live DVD/Blu-ray and documentary package on October 16 via Eagle Rock Entertainment.

The project presents “Live At Metropolis”, which captures the band performing before a select audience at London’s Metropolis Studios.

The lineup includes frontman Lintin Osborne, who joined Nazareth in 2014 following the retirement of founding member and original singer Dan McCafferty, who left the group in 2013 due to health issues. The vocalist had been dealing with C.O.P.D. (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), which had gotten worse in the past few years.

The companion documentary, “Made In Scotland”, traces Nazareth’s career from their formation in 1968 to their breakthrough in the 1970s, and their ongoing career. The film contains classic footage and new interviews with past and present members of the band, including McCafferty.

The package also includes an acoustic performance of the band’s cover of the Joni Mitchell tune, “This Flight Tonight,” a hit for the group in 1973.

“No Means Of Escape” will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and digitally, with “Live At Metropolis” and “Made In Scotland” available as two separate elements.

The band’s 23rd studio album and first since 2011’s “Big Dogz” features what may be the last album with founding member and original singer Dan McCafferty, who retired from the group last year due to health issues. The vocalist has been dealing with C.O.P.D. (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), which had gotten worse in the past two years.

“Rock ‘N’ Roll Telephone” will issued as a standard CD and double LP, as well as in a Deluxe Digipack edition will include a second disc with two additional studio recordings and five live tracks.

Nazareth formed in December 1968 in Dunfermline, Scotland, and have gone on to sell more than 30 million albums worldwide.

Following an extensive audition process, the band named Lintin Osborne as their new frontman in February.

Scottish rockers Nazareth have announced their first Canadian tour with new singer Lintin Osborne, who recently replaced retired founding member Dan McCafferty.

The group will launch a 12-show run June 25th in Duncan, British Columbia, with a series of dates across Western Canada scheduled to July 19th in Edmonton, Alberta.

The tour comes on the heels of news that the band will release a new album, “Rock ‘N’ Roll Telephone”, in the UK on June 9th.

The band’s 23rd studio album and first since 2011’s “Big Dogz” features what may be the last album with McCafferty, who retired from the group last year due to health issues, including C.O.P.D. ( Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

“Rock ‘N’ Roll Telephone” will released as a standard CD and double LP, as well as in a Deluxe Digipack edition will include a second disc with two additional studio recordings and five live tracks.

Scottish rockers Nazareth have named Lintin Osborne as their new frontman following last year’s retirement of founding member and singer Dan McCafferty.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland and raised in Rosyth near Dunfermline, the 41-year-old Linton has been singing and performing professionally for as long as he can remember.

Osborne joins Nazareth after an extensive audition process; the band are now in rehearsals as they prepare to return to the road for live dates.

Last August, McCafferty announced his retirement from the band due to health issues, including C.O.P.D. ( Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), which had gotten worse in the past year.

Nazareth formed in December 1968 in Dunfermline, Scotland, from the remaining members of semi-professional local group The Shadettes (formed in 1961) by vocalist Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton (ex Mark V and The Red Hawks), bassist Pete Agnew and drummer Darrell Sweet.

The group took their name from Nazareth, Pennsylvania, which is cited in the first line of The Band's classic song "The Weight" ("I pulled into Nazareth / Was feelin' about half past dead...").

The band has included several players through the years, with McCafferty and bassist Pete Agnew the only continuous members.

The new lineup includes Osborne, Agnew, guitarist Jimmy Murrison and Agnew’s son, Lee, on drums.

Nazareth singer Dan McCafferty has retired from the band due to health issues.

The group released a statement advising fans that McCafferty suffers from C.O.P.D. ( Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), which has gotten worse lately.

After trying to play a festival in Switzerland last weekend, Dan found it impossible to continue after performing only three songs; in the dressing room afterwards, the singer told the band that he couldn’t go on any longer.

The news comes following an on-stage collapse in Canada last month that led to the cancellation of the remainder of the band’s tour there.
